I doubt wall-mart would ever even consider DR, anyhow. Wall-mart is greatly about efficency through economics of size (e.j. constantly expanding within the markets it serves). DR doesn't have the number of cities with a big enough population Wal-Mart would desire.

As I remember we almost got a K-Mart here. They left a great big hole on the corner of JFK and Tiradentes. They had some global financial difficulties and pulled out of the DR if my memory serves me right.

An IKEA here, that would make me VERY happy!

I better buy flowers, Pib is going to have a heart attack with excitement the day IKEA opens here ;)

Holy crap......what would Walmart pay a Dominican senior citizen greeter........do you think there'd be benefits???

Assuming this is a sarcastic jab on Walmarts recent bad pr because of it's lack of benefits I'll answer a rhetorical question with a semi-rhetorical one (it doesn't really deserve an answer but I'll do it just in case you're in the dark about things here) - who is taking care of the senior citizens here now? - not Leonel or anybody else on in the public service on this island - that's fer damn tootin sure!

walmart will not be cheap here, just like pricesmart. Their prices will not be much different that the local stores, not to mention, variety will be scarce. I am a big walmart fan.
Mondongo, Gringo carlos is American.
I wonder if Ikea will present the huge variety they have in USA? I like that furniture chain, they have everything for everyone. I bet it will not be cheap at all.

These ones are capitalist, and they are now about to hurt many Dominican businesses both large and small - from furnuture manufacturers in the Cibao to the biggest department stores in Santo Domingo propper. ..not to mention, as per the OP, what they've done to the environmental patronato of Santo Domingo already.
..come on people, lets trash these capitalist Swedes!

well i checked out their website , and right on the first page is a few pieces of furniture, one of which is very simlar to what i was looking for , for my gfs bedroom. she wanted a white short bureau. They list one for $149....and it looks like it is probably double the quality that i had been seeing in the DR for the same thing...and they were all priced at about 5-8K pesos....and the ones that were near 5,000 pesos almost fell right out of the frame when pulled only a quarter of the way out!!!!...cheap cheap...no slides, poor paint...1/8 luan inside!!!! they all looked like my brother made them in the garage....mainly because she wanted white.....

I see fantastic natural wood furniture in the DR...mohagany(sp?) especially

I have a feeling they will survive if IKEA comes into the market place.

As long as they don't serve dolphin and fries in the food court, I'm happy to pay more for their products. IKEA will be a massive asset to Santo Domingo!

I thought that was Ingvar Kamprad in Jumbo the other day :)
