meaning of barrio

I am curious--can someone tell me what a barrio is--I thought it was just another name for community or neighbourhood? If you don't live in a barrio in the City, what is it called? Is gregario luperon barrio in Puerto Plata a dangerous or not so great place to live or visit someone? I have a lot to learn!

So its not racism for a black person to complain of another but it is for non-blacks. Why can't black people be criticized? Other races are be it jokingly or seriously. I enjoy David Letterman. I see how openly they joke about whites. But you can see the careful reservation with which he treats blacks. Many black men have a chip on their shoulder. If you criticize them, they want to resort to agression. I saw this in Boca Chica, San Pedro.
Using an example in Boca Chica and San Pedro to generalize black men is laughable. What if I go to the drug corners in Wash. Heights and use that as a generalization of Dominicans? I would'nt because I am educated and know better. Generalizing shows a lack of education. Using David Letterman. Are you kidding?? Do you know him, spoke to him, read an article about him?? I didn't think so. Many ALL men have chips on their shoulder and there are many non-black aggressive people in this world, pick up a newspaper once in while.

Tigre, i am sure when your parents were young and living in buenos aires, it was a whole different barrio then. Unfortunately, buenos aires is not the same any more. It has a reputation of a very dangerous barrio in santiago. No wonder 80% of your family is out of there now.
The place you took me to have lunch in your tia's house was a perfect example of what onions & carrots is trying to portray regarding the better barrios in DR. I guess it was las colinas and the place was quite relaxed and noiseless. the food was simple but excellent. I ate like 3 plates. The people were very plesant and I felt right at home.
AZB

Actually AZB Buenos Aires is a much safer place today than what it was in the 80s and 90s. Buenos Aires came to be in 1968 when they had to remove the people that lived in the grounds where La Avenida Circumvalacion (sp) is at now.

The place I took you to is El Ingco. El Ingco is a far better barrio than Buenos Aires.

There is NOOOOOOOOOOOOO such thing as a black ghetto. O/C I disagree with you 100% on that one. Maybe a batey somewhere comprised of Hatians which are mostly black.

To answer you question on what a barrio is:

Barrio - Cada una de las zonas en que se divide una poblacion grande.

What type of people are in the worst ghettos in MEXICO, LATIN AMERICA, & EASTERN EUROPE?? Barrios are Barrios, whether its Black, White, Red, or Yellow. I don't hang out in Barrios in the DR, but since the majority of the country is mullatto its safe to believe that most of the people in the worst barrios are mixed. Stop being hung up on race, since you are probably mixed with the same people you are putting down. Don't be narrow minded.
Ricardo, seriously brother, why do you bother?.

I will just say the same thing I said on the old thread, after reading the below post by O&C regarding "Peaches", a white foreigner:

"We need more men and women like Peaches in the DR. They can only improve the conditions here with their stunning presence".

I mean, just because Peaches was white meant that she was going to improve the DR's conditions. What if Peaches was uneducated and from a ghetto in, let's say, the US, was she going to improve the DR conditions.

Anyway, my reply to that post was:

"Did someone had too much to drink or is someone getting too carried away".

Now, regarding the latest posts, I can only say:

SOMEONE ESCAPED, WHO IN HELL LEFT THE GATE OPEN?!!!!!!!!!.

El Ingco is my "adoptive" barrio in Santiago. I always stay at my friend's family's house across the street from Las Gemelas colmado. The neigborhood seems fairly quiet with a good amount of professionals living there. I had a great time there this New Years Eve knocking back rounds of beer with the neighbors that I have been talking to since my first trip in 2001 before I went out on the town.

Ricardo, take it easy, O&C is not such a bad guy as he has come to be portrayed by many. In my books, you both are cool dudes, I bet if you 2 get together, you 2 will have a few laughters over a few cold ones.
Now ricardo, when are you coming back to cibao? Don't forget to catch me in my office, this time I will show you some of my secret spots in campos.

If this is the same Onions&Carrots of the old days, then I say he is not a racist. Way before I had the courage to post, I would read O&C's bouts with TonyC, Scaramooch, CCcc and golo. Onions would always take it to them in defense of the underdogs.

something of the night

I would not stick my head out for O&C. As usual he only wants to foment controversy.
During the old, old days, when the Brit seemed to be running this board with a Commodore Vic20, O&C used to tearfully say:
".............oh, but I am white, white, white. I am not like the rest of them. Why can't anybody understand that? I am white and very rich and I am moving to England to prove my point".
Then he would disappear for a while and return looking for Golo (RIP?) and more controversy.

On a brief note, jo...ito, looks like you survived last summer's Houston stampede.
Take care.

One of my favorites...glad to hear from you.

I thought they ran DR1 from one of those Timex-Synclair PCs advertised in Popular Electronics circa 1979.

This is nonsense. I laughed while reading this. AZB and something of the night know where I'm coming from. I'll stop the black African diatribe. You just won't catch me in Boca Chica or San Pedro de Macoris or the entire East for that matter.

Your reasoning is circular. It just happens to be that the majority of poor ghetto violent people in the DR happen to be darker. WHY? I'm not getting into the sociological reasons for poverty, what engenders it? I am stating "what is" in the DR.

Ah, ah, ah--careful, careful. My argument was that some Dominicans tend to use circular reasoning to explain social stratification based on color within the society, without failing to acknowledge historical legacy on the island (i.e., slavery for one)--my post should still be there for you to re-read, in its entirety.

But by not "getting into the sociological reasons for poverty" you INSINUATE that race and poverty/crime is inexorably linked--and that my friend is just pure ignorance.

Barrio girls will always more than likely be insignificant pieces of flesh who are only good for one night. They are all superfcial brats which is odd considering their financial situation. If you take them out, they'll order an exotic dish on the menu even though they probably never ate it in their entire lives yet order it they do. When I wear designer clothing they drool and ask me where I got it. When I drive in my nicely appointed SUV, they stare like the mindless idiots that they are. Most of them are tigeres just
like their chopo male counterparts and would probably even set you up somewhere in a road so her tigere friends can rob you. Why any respectable man would even venture out into the slums of the city is beyond me. If you like these type of "pure" Dominican girls, visit laid back campo towns like San Jose De Las Matas, Janico, Moca, Sabana Iglesia, etc. Don't go out to Los Cireulitos, Buenos Aires, etc. You'll probably get shot and robbed by the unemployed chopos.

You sound like another African-American from DR's past. I don't remember his name.

If you want a black African experience in the DR, go to San Pedro de Macoris. Those dominicans are extremely proud of their African ancestry and they celebrate it various times of the year. They're descendants of the black folk who came from the English-speaking islands.

If you're a black american you'll feel happy to know how they cherish Africa there. They don't ignore the historical legacy of the island. I remember this black dominican child from San Pedro telling me that there are no white dominicans. He insisted they are all moreno and negro. I just smiled at the limpiabota.

La Romana, Boca Chica, Hato Mayor and most of the East is in sync with this mentality. I'm not criticizing it. I guess to be honest I don't feel totally comfortable in the presence of so many black people. If that makes me a racist, then so be it.

Seriously though, I don't feel the comfort that I feel when I am in the cibao. There are so many of us cibaenos who would live to split the DR into 2. Myself I have entertained the idea of a Republica del Cibao.

Honestly, I want to keep the eurocentric Spanish model alive and well in the DR. Any move towards an African model would displease me greatly. Of course, I hate any notion of slavery/servitude. I look out for the little guy. I don't like it when I hear despictive things said about other groups but I do have my biases.

AZB has countered this argument already and so have I. What kind of girl would get into a stranger's car? San Jose, Moca, Janico are cities like SD and Santiago compared to the towns I go to. Yet in those areas mentioned people are respectable. There are plenty of barrio girls which are respectable. You just don't see them. They aren't struttin their stuff up and down the street looking for an SUV.

On the other hand Senor Jimenez, I feel the problem is that the darker skinned chopa girls do exhibit overwhelmingly the behavior you characterized. The darker skinned ones especially the morenas and negras do have that superficial quality to them. Whereas in the DR less than 20% are white, the lighter skinned ones have a tendency towards more acceptable behavior.

And of course at least 85% or more of that 20% is concentrated in the cibao area. Amongst the white I also incude those girls that have obvious Taino features which makes for a nice ethnic makeup of Spanish/Taino.
