ROTFLMAO, you have to be making this story up .......... but just for the fun of it next time I hit La Cadena may just give it a try................ LOL

100% true story. If you knew this women you would believe it. A poster above had a similar experience. Personally I think it's hilarious how out of control things can get over virtually nothing.

Dominican wife tips everyone. Gas station guy, bag boys, absolutely everyone no matter what the service. Ialmost gave up complaining. She is training me to shut up but its slow going so far.

Tipping is different. Tipping is a choice I make, depending on service and my mood (lately, very b!#chy). Being shorted change with no explanation is thievery.

but its on such a small scale that it should not even register on the scale. jeesh,, we talking about 2 or 5 pesos ?
At like a BUSY Playero Mercado I think they just too lazy to call out for change. and you know they only give them ONE roll of coins at a time.. Maybe they should ask the Bag Boys for their Loose change ?..
whatever system they have it does not work, agreed, but i hardly think the concept is to shortchange people 2 pesos all day long and at the end of the day they made 500 extra Pesos that way. I just dont see it. Now IF I am buyning 2 lbs of MEAT and I get it home and its NOT 2 lbs, thats a different story. Getting cheated of PRODUCT is Thievery..
Getting short changed 2 pesos, and given Candy , WHILE FACE TO FACE is NOT thievery, IMO..

and by the way , If you want to protect yourself.. YOU carry the CHANGE,, and then give them the change amount on the total , and ask for PAPER only back.. Short circuit them right on the spot.
I actually DO this here in the states , but not for those reasons, I am just slowly trying to get rid of like a Gallon of Change, which will never happen, but point is, WE are partly to Blame. We CREATE the SHORTAGE of Change..
In Other countries , people DO carry Change purses, and the retailer has the right to ask you " dont you have exact change".
and its not condidered Rude of them at all. They are not a BANK..
jeesh...am I the only weirdo who is just not getting this ?

The Moto guys not having change for 100 or even 50 pesos (when it was 25 for a ride), thats a different story, those guys are obviosuly playing games..

Funny , I asked my attendant ( outside of Sosua ) for 3000 pesos of premium gas. I havent filled up in a while since the prices dropped. But I thought 3000 would be more than enough. I shoulda been paying attention to what he was doing instead of talking to my passenger. At some point I did pay attention, and it looked like he had stopped pumping but was just standing next to the nozzle in my car. Now seeing me looking, he pulls the nozzle out, returns it to its cradle. I stretch my neck to look but its too late. The mugg cleared the display so I wouldnt get to see what he had pumped. My car was full, but Im not sure at what point it was full. I realized at that point, he had filled the car, reset the display and acted like he was still pumping gas. Lesson learned? You have to pay attention to everything. Other gas stations Ive been to, they show you the display before they start pumping. I neglected to check out my display. So from now on, I will watch everything they are doing before, during and after services are rendered. Im reasonably sure he only got me for less than 150 pesos. I might have been able to go inside and see if they had a record of the transaction on their register, but I chocked it up as my bad, a lesson learned and moved on. Generally speaking you have to always be a step ahead of people you do business with or hand money to. They have plenty of time to devise ways of skimming money off of folks who they think wont miss it, and probably in their minds can afford the loss.

Getting the correct change in a large store has never been a problem for me. Reading my receipt and catching the cashier
charging me double for an item when I only purchased one happens all the time. I make a point of reading my receipt before I
walk away from the register.

Last time we had a thread about this I kept a close watch on change given afterwards, because I usually just stuff it in mu pocket without counting it, but when I did I noticed that when I should have been given 33 pesos in change I actually got 35 as often as not.

You should have been living here when all the money changers were on el conde changing dollars. They were better than any magician i have ever seen. they had a way that in front of you they would count the dollars in front of you and could double over $ 100 dollar bills faster than the eye could detect. As they walked away and you counted your money to find you have been coned they magicly dissapeared. .

Just left La Cadena. My change was to be 58 pesos. Well the cashier only had 56 pesos so she gave me that expecting me to smile and walk away. She could have very easily got up off her rear end and walked 30 feet to customer service to get more change as there will be more customers after me. Nope she won't do that.

I politely kept my mouth shut, tapped on the counter to let her know two more pesos. Well she gets an attitude and takes back one peso and replaces it with a five pesos coin. I end up with two extra pesos of change. It is not about two measly pesos but more so what a person thinks they can just get away with.

Same thing when I hit the gas station to fill up. Pump stops a few pesos under being even money. Instead of squeezing the handle the attendant shuts the pump off and quite naturally does not have the few pesos of change. I sit and wait for him to go inside and get my change just to annoy him.

I have a list a mile long of how you will get nickeled and dimed here..............but, I still love living here.

The the DR is the HOME of being nickeled and dimed to death. When you came here you signed on for this. I know sometimes it is about attitude but this is their domain. If you can't accept this maybe you are in the wrong place. Let it go before it pushes you over the edge.

We got his with this ONCE , in the the Capital, like circa 2003... guy walking around making Cambio, another on a Moto nearby..
The " magician" counted the change he was giving us, and it looked right.. But I was standing NEXT to my friend, and should have seen it as he was counting the pesos to him.... Im not a magician but i can describe what they do, they use 2 fingers from underneath to PEEL some of the money they just counted and TUCK IT into the palm of that hand ... Its so fast and Flawless that the eye can not even see it, especially if you are looking at it directly. From the SIDE I saw something, but still it did not ring an Alarm... My friend counted the Pesos and as he was getting near the end he said " something is not right, stop him" .. .as the guy was casually walking, CASUALLY... when I called the guy, the moto was already alongside, he hoppped on and was GONE .. Very smooth.. Count the money YOURSELF, Before giving them the Dollars..
this stops the SCAM in its Tracks... ... The Street guys I have used in Sosua for example ,, will GIVE me the Pesos Money even if I am in the car (after we agree on the amount and rate) .. and then I hand them my dollars..this is the proper way.

Strictly speaking for myself and not nicking anyone for contrary opinions. Living in the DR has changed me and now I look for the easier softer pathway which never involves standing on principles. I am not spending a ton of psychic energy for a few pesos. I am not ever teaching a Dominican a "lesson". To be honest I tried for a time but quickly realized the futility of banging my head against Dominican walls. I do take the chicklet change and laugh. Just how things are.

I quite agree. A well-known Pto Pta character and occasional poster on DR1 died recently. Having known him for a few years and observing him at close quarters for fifteen months, I honestly believe that fighting every battle, often over trivial amounts, greatly contributed to his premature demise. No way am I getting apoplectic over a few pesos ten times a month.

If I did, I would never do my weekly shopping at La Sirena, which is otherwise convenient for me. Their pricing is extremely lax. I would say up to a tenth of items are not charged as priced on the shelves, though I buy a lot of "offers" which makes it harder for them to get it right.

It is impossible to check items as they are "rung up" as the discounts are only applied with the final total. To then query a discrepancy it is then necessary to endure a demeaning rigmarole at the customer service desk. It can take up to half and hour to procure a refund, which is grudgingly handed over as if the customer is defrauding the store.

The discrepancies are by no means all one way. For example, this week there were a half-dozen items discounted where no mention was made of this on the shelf display.

I can't give you a date but the peso was trading a little over 30 to the dollar. A business associate and I were leaving Santo Domingo going to Santiago. Before leaving the hotel I went to the casino and changed maybe $20 and she gave me 28 to 1. I just needed some pesos for the road so I wasn't worried about getting the prevailing rate. After leaving the hotel we went to the Isla gas station on El Conde. I was in the passenger seat and my buddy got out to observe the attendant pump the gas. A fellow on a moto approached my buddy and asked if he wanted any change. He said he would give him 32 to 1. My friend stuck his head into the window and asked if 32 to 1 was a good deal? I told him yes and I had got 28 to 1 at the hotel. After more discussion with the moto driver he stuck his head in the window again and asked me if 32 to 1 was better than 28 to 1. That's when I knew he was in trouble. I got out of the car and walked around and my friend had given the moto driver $100. The guy counted out 3200 pesos in my buddy hand. Then he said I'm going to give you an extra 20 pesos, took the money, put 20 pesos on top and gave it back. Got on his moto and drove away.

Attendant finished filling the car up and my buddy started to pay him but instead of having 3,220 pesos he had 720. We tried to pay with a CC but the machine wouldn't accept it. So we pooled our pesos together and came up around 150 pesos short. The attendants accept the short pay which convinced me they were in on the scam. My buddy was p$ssed and he drove around trying to find the moto. Of course we couldn't find him. On the way to Santiago I told my buddy my lips were sealed and nobody would have to know how he got scammed. I lied, I told everybody. My favorite line was "is 32 to 1 better than 28 to 1". Hahaha.
