out of curiosity i asked miesposo - the only always available dominican around here - whether he tried jugo de jagua. he made a very serious face and said: no. i smelled it.

Actually; they do eat the fruit by making dulce... meaning, they cook it down in water, sugar, cinnamon, and cloves, in the same manner that they do it with orange peel, cherries, cashew friut, etc. It still ends up having the same distinct, funky taste.

AE, I wouldn't discourage you from trying it. Everyone's tastebuds are different, and some people do love it.

I've had some of those dulces, and all I can say is 'yuck'. Some in the family go out of their way to buy it, there's a woman who makes it in Ocoa who is supposed to make the best, we always have to stop on our way home. I'd hate to taste the worst after that. I'm more of the dulce de leche type, especially the one sold at the cruce de ocoa in the little booth. Ay, ay, ay.
