This is the exact type of posting that drives me nuts. Listen, this is not the end of the world, and people start panicking and going off the deep end for no reason. Same as exit fees. Correct, this policy has been in existence for I don't know how long, but regardless it is no big deal. If you're using the self service kiosk, just enter a date of return no more than 30 days from that date. Nothing more/nothing less. End of problem. Yes, I have done this myself. I have flown on one way tickets for years.

Last month (October) Copa asked for a return ticket which I had booked on Jet Blue ( I had an award ticket on Copa). The Agent logged the Jet Blue flight details on a sheet (not on computer).

To avoid a hassle I now book round trip. If I happen to miss my trip home I will simply buy a one way ticket....

Spirit from Ft Laud definitely enforces the mandatory return ticket policy...good source of extra income for them.

Thats very good, when we travel to other countries if we do not show a return ticket as Dominicans we can not board. so now is more equal.

Hmm. . maybe that is because dominicans are famous for visa overstays? Also famous for getting section 8, medicaid and WIC in record time? The majority of ex pats traveling to DR contribute to the economy and not suck benefits from the DR.

Sorry but just heard a case today of dominican family with section 8 housing going "home" for many months or a year and RENTING the apt they don't pay for. Their food bought by family on their snap cards will be shipped down in blue barrels as well. Great life.

This is why the US is called the home of the "free".

It may have worked for you.
I tried that and the agent at the kiosks tried it.

He directed me to the counter after failing.

I was told that the system was 'picky'....

just added a few minutes to the trip for me by showing my residency.

Who knows if I had had no residency ?.

After trying to check in online and at the airport kiosk unsuccessfully , I went to the HelpDesk .

There is a new question at checkin , you must supply a return date or a visa for RD visits.

I entered on a one day ticket.
The system wouldn't accept the residency card.

Solution is to have the help desk check you in manually.

It seems you now need to prove your return or residency status to issue the boarding pass.

Vamos a ver.

This was for a JFK to POP flight today , Oct 31

So just by a refundable one way ticket return and cancel for refund later.

It's a recurring story on dr1. Basically some folks invested gobs of time and money into the most ridiculous and bureaucratic process on this planet aka 'DR residency' - all for very dubious benefits (ok, you can legally own a gun for 10 times the US price, that's about it), and now they are trying to convince others (but mostly just themselves) that it was the smartest thing to do and the rest of us will soon be barred from the island / deported etc etc. Years are passing by and it's frustrating for them to watch how we refuse to buy the lemon they grossly overpaid for, so they will giddily jump on every tiniest change in the process that would hopefully indicate some tightening of the border requirements in the near future and fear monger the hell out of those. We call their BS and happily keep paying our 10 bucks a month or so in exit fees. And so it goes...

Are "refundable" tickets much more expensive? I have been in the circumstance of changing regular airfare tickets with American Airlines and its like getting blood out of a turnip.

Over the last 18 years I have probably flown to the DR 400 times or so. Maybe more. On american I have been asked for return ticket twice. Both times were years ago and both times tocket agent was a dominicana. One was completely nasty telling me if I don't have residency I need return ticket. I informed her that I had flow there a hundred times or more and zero problems as I never stay more than 30 days. More often a week or less. She refused. I asked for manager. Manager checked me in.

Once flying out of medellin, COPA refused to let me check in. I made a stink. I said I flew from SDQ to panama to medellin on their airline and if they needed a return flight they should inform me before flying me to colombia as I live in DR and not in colombia.
She insisted I can't check in. I ask if I have to live in medellin now? Blank stare. I told her I had a reservation but it was on american and I had no cel service to log into app. She actually dragged my butt downstairs and loaned me a computer to show her reservation. I put a hold on a flight, turned on data on my phone, went upstairs to show her and she checked me in with that "I showed him smirk". I cancelled the hold before reaching security. Dope.

Yes, they are. It's cheaper to buy two one-ways.
