just uploaded a few photos of the beach i meantioned...a bit to the east (right) of juan dolio. Nothing really spectacular...but just nice and quiet no tourists..no locals...i think there was one guy about 150 years away from us. not sure if the beach is still "open"...as it was in front of some really large (yet abandoned) estate. When i will the lotto...this might be the place i buy :)

Ok....this is the beach just past COOP Marena Beach resort where Marechiero Apartments is going to be built. In one you can see the remains of the "in sea" lounge that used to be connected to the beach at Marena by a 'boardwalk'.
The one with the wall is where Las Olas is going to be built.........
It is a very nice quiet beach used at present mainly by guests at Hotel Flor di Loto (nice to lounge on but the water really isn't deep enough for swimming).
Just a wee bit further down is the remains of Costa Linda resort (which also has a nice beach area albeit not good for swimming either!).
So jrzy ya must have walked right past our condo building when you were there.....:)

I know this is not the case! But i had a experince in P.R were all beaches are public!!!!! But the access to the beach is not!!!!! What that means is that you cannot access the public beach thrue any private land!!!!! because you are trespassing!!! So your choice are pretty much to access by abandoned sites or by water !!! this was creating a problem specially on San Juan Beaches that all the five star hotels were located so the goverment opened apeasements or little sidewalks by decree between private properties allowing full access to all beaches!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So ...to open appeasements or little sidewalks between private properties allowing full access to all beaches ... sure is going to take place in Villas Del Mar in the future ... but it takes time...

This is exactly why some beaches in the DR will NEVER become Blue Flag certified -- one of the core mandatory criteria for certification is unobstructed public access to the beach seeking certification.

well on the other side of the coin.....you wont have a 5 star beach resort that has poor people staggering along asking for handouts and selling junk trinkets, and leaving their garbage behind...if you have full open acess to the beach for the public.........does anyone really want to promote an area that has open access to beautiful beaches when they are 50 yards in front of a 4 story hotel!!!!!!!!!!!!!

seems contradictory to me

I understand your perspective, but like it or not, Dominican law says that beach belongs to the public, not to the hotel and its guests. Yeah, realities on the ground are that Dominicans usually don't assert their right of access, but perhaps someday a Supreme Court will change that...

I don't like the endless parade of beggers and salesmen either -- one of the principal reasons I stay away from Boca Chica's public beach, for example. But I think they can be handled through proper policing, doesn't have to be total public access cut-off. Yeah, I know, "proper policing in the DR" may be an oxymoron :cheeky:

BTW Bob, I was speaking of Blue Flag certification, which brings a heck of alot of benefits to users of the certified beaches, the hotels and busiensses and local municipality backing it, and the environment. You know, little unimportant things like properly training lifeguards, guaranteed clear bathing water, minimized damage to local reefs, properly trained boat captains for boating services, beach clean-ups.... If Bayahibe can do it and make it an economic success, I suspect other Dominican beaches can too.

In puerto rico we also have vendors and poor people asking for money but not as bad the D.R. Neverthless the goverment also prohibited soliciting on the Beaches!!! That means that street vendors are not allow in any public beach area!!!!! So if you want to to buy a beer you must buy it from vendors and busineses on the public street!!!! Hotels also let you purchase any drinks from their bars. Hotels have permission form the goverment to serve any product on the beach!!!!!!!!! There area allot of Cops on the Beaches and they really enforce the law so pretty much you dont get vagabonds and street vendors on P.R beaches but now you will see the rich and the poor together in peace!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there is nothing 5 star hotel could due about it!!!!!

Actually Playa Vicini is only about 1-1.5 kms west....

It is right ...the pics from media gallery are made in Las Olas site airview pictures from caribbean photos on webshots ...and the other one from Google Maps is in Playa Vicini ... miles west.

just a nice little stroll from the Las Olas site.

Anyone who goes back to my early blog entries of our first trips to JD can see pic's of Marena beach, "Las Olas beach area", Costa Linda beach, the beach where Cabo Mar is and Playa Vicini. They're all up on the blog!

Which by the way I WILL be updating in the near future (as in after New Year's).

Heard to day that indeed all beach access points in the Villas del Mar area WILL be closed once construction is finished...... so while the beach will remain public you'll need to learn to fly or pay to use the "Beach clubs" to have access to them!

They've started spraying sand in Villas del Mar. We can watch the 'action' from the public beach in old Juan Dolio!

In your dreams.......
You'll be able to use the accesses mentioned for now but once they are closed you'll either need to buy a membership to Metro (US$30,000 last time we checked) or Guavaberry or get used to the fact that you need to come to old Juan Dolio to use the public beach.

I spoke w/someone at Metro Country Club who informed me that membership is $250,000 RD with a monthly maintenance of approximately $2,000RD or $2,500RD and you don't have to own in Metro Country Club to be a member. I'm also purchasing a Villa in the Villas del Mar area and one of my concerns is access to the beach as well....still researching.
