With long lines in Agora Mall, the first Juan Valdez Café store opened in Santo Domingo this week. The Colombian coffee chain store is part of a strategic partnership with local franchisee United Brands, which expects to open another two outlets in the DR by the end of this year. One of these will be at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), targeting the younger demographic.

The Juan Valdez Café shop will compete with the market leader Café Santo Domingo with stores in most leading malls. The US coffee leading brand, Starbucks has seven stores in Santo Domingo.

Juan Valdez operates 368 stores in Colombia and has opened outlets in several Latin American markets, including Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, El Salvador, Panama, Costa Rica, Aruba and Curacao.

"Juan Valdez is a creation of the Colombian Federation of Coffee Growers (called the FNC or Fedecafe). This Federation was started in 1927 to protect and promote the coffee industry in Colombia."

Everything that takes a buck or two away from starbucks is warmly welcomed by me.
You can say that again in spades. Starbucks sucks almost as bad as Santo Domingo(the city, not the coffee) does, but not quite.

With the easy availability of great coffee in bars and restaurants and the ease in making it at home with a moka pot or even getting a shot from a street vendor I see no reason to buy crappy coffee from international franchises. I also don’t need or enjoy a huge cup of too much sugar drowned in milk or cream NA style.

Give me a cafe Dominicano, or an espresso, black, anytime

I would be willing to try it at least once. I really like Starbucks dark roast, I just hate their prices and politics so I never imbibe.

To each their own, I guess. I think it’s nasty but that’s just one guy’s opinion.

I don’t know anyone that enjoys it. Sometimes it just convenient or the only viable option besides not having a coffee, like in many movie theaters but I would never seek it out and often wait or have a water

You're not their target.
These are for the middle/upper class dominicans, popis and middle class beginners who already see JuanValdez and Starbucks on every trip they make with Arajet or JetBlue.

I'm guessing you're not a cup or two of coffee every morning kind of guy. You're not their demographic.

Coffee wars:

- Starbucks opening agressively in Santo Domingo
- Cafe Santo Domingo making partnerships at large and expanding, too
- And now Juan Valdez

@NALs
Starbucks may be trash however I certainly prefer competition over monopolies.

Enough pot stirring, bickering and off topic posts.

Don't make me start having to delete and provide vacations.
