It was explained to me a long time ago by Dominican friends that the more literal meaning is something like the two sides of a bean (yes, a pod) coming together to form a "trap" of sorts.

It can mean both yes.

FYI, just about every latin country have a unique version of that word.

In El Salvador and Mexico the word used is VOLADO
In Nicaragua and Costa Rica is CHUNCHE
In Honduras is Berga
In Venezuela is Cono e Madre.
In Colombia and Bolivia is Motete.

"Deja la vaina!" ("leave it alone, I'm done talking about that")
"Me gusta esa vaina/ Me encanta esa vaina!!" ("I like that!! I love that!!")
"Mira esa vaina" ("Look at that")
"Yo no hago esa vaina" ("I don't do that sh*t")
"Ese hombre que vende chancleta y vaina" ("That man that sells sandals and stuff")

Very good summary... L The mechanics usually use "La cosa" for parts that they do not have the name for... BUT if it is a part that does not work they say "La vaina no sirve co?o..." Like "The fckin thing does not work"

Yes, vaina could mean anything: "Que vaina es la tuya?" = What is your problem?

Usage:
Native Speaker: "Como te cuenta hermanito que lo que hay bla bla bla..."

Alla o a ya? Yes. It's whatever you feel like. Baina o vaina? What day of the week is it? My ex-suegra would write Bayaguana one day and Ballaguana the next. Then there are the words that don't even exist in Spanish but they're used nonetheless. Like haiga. It's really haya. But no one seems to give un carajo. Enjoy!

If you dont have an intricate and working understanding of "la vaina", you arent aplatanao for sh--.

It actually means you have a vocabulary that consists of more than 20 words and can carry on a conversation with a professional without embarrassing oneself. Then again with only 20 words at ones disposal I doubt you would notice.
