How 'bout mango wine?

In the states there is a wonderful mango wine. It is quite sweet, I usually prefer a dryer (?) wine--but this one is YUMMY. That's what made me wonder about wines in the DR.

I have also seen some jugs in the cabinets of a friend in Mata Gorda. I asked her about it once and she said it was a family recipe. Maybe my best bet is to con her into opening up a bottle next time I am there.

Chiquita in the DR there is a place ( an institution, I will ask my aunt who lives there) that offers baking courses for free and there is a wine course...Of course, not wine made of grapes, but wine made out of other fruits that can be grown in the DR and the supposedly these wines taste amazing. My cousin told me that they taught them how to make wine from Pinneapples, rice, raisings, etc. I would assume that since we can produce good tropical fruits, we might be able to produce good fruit wine ;).

Canadian grape varieties are now being planted in the DR for winemaking (probably the one a previous post in this thread mentioned).
We were told about them when we visited Costanza this winter.
Since the Niagara wine region is gaining international recognition for their superior wine production expect to see a made in the DR world class wine soon.
In the meantime, I buy Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Brunello di Montalcino reds in the Jumbo supermarkets in San Pedro and La Romana. While not an inexpensive wine (RD$714 and RD$1395 per bottle), they are both excellent Italian wines.

The project of making wine (out of grapes of course), in the Neyba area in the SW of the DR has been started in 2000 or 2001 by the Ministery of Agriculture together with Italian specialists.

It was mentioned in that news article that approx. 50 different Italian grapes will be planted and first results to be seen in a few years.
I've been trying to find out whether first results are available but so far I failed.
If anyone has relation to the Ministry of Agriculture maybe we could get some info on the subject.

By the way, I've never thought that grapes grow in the NW (Washington) of the US and I was surprised about the excellent white wines they produce.
In Italy over 200 different grapes are grown in different climate conditions, maybe they find some which cope with soil and climate in Neyba.

El Leon

Dominicans make delicious wine comparable to what you'll find in Europe.

It is not really wine...

What is sold in the DR as local wine, like the El Le?n brand in the picture, is actually a beverage concoction made with concentrated grape syrop that goes by the name "grape must", and which is mixed with sugarcane or ethyl alcohol and water to produce the product mislabeled as "vino tinto".

I believe the custom is to chill white and drink red at room temperature, but room temperature around here is a wee bit too warm.
Besides, who has the right to tell you how you should enjoy your beverages?
PS: Don't know prices off hand, but they are very reasonable, way cheaper than French.

room temperture is actually 65 F

white wine good at around 55

Can such things like "other fruits" and that "el leon" beverage be called wine. I doubt it. But i heard they have produced in very small quantities some medium quality wine in the Neyba area already. Ill find out and post during the weekend.

Neyba wines are nothing new. About twenty years ago, I bought a few bottles of Neyba wine in a local supermarket. It must have been part of a very short production run, since all the bottles went quickly. Trying to remember the brand, it had one of those religious names that start with San or Santa something or other, popular among winemakers. Actually, the wine was quite good, considering that I had recently become a regular wine drinker, and my tastes were yet to be refined and as descriminating as they are today. I would put those Neyba wines of yesteryear in the category of say a carbernet-savignon Chilean wine that is currently available under the name of Santo Tom?s (beber para creer...,-)

Thank's for the link!

It shows that they are also experimenting with the way they grow the grapes, which may influence the final product as well.

Just for curiosity, did anyone try this wine already?
