You cannot please all of the people all of the time but I have two times as many likes as dislikes. Computer and rest is working from solar...

I try to keep on topic of living costs etc. Just working out if my robotic floor cleaner is cheaper than a maid.... could work out that way.

I hate the fact that I'm seriously considering the ignore button on Pi2/Yannadu, but his ill-informed rants have been far more distracting than informative for some time. As overmoderated as this board has been accused of being in the past, I'm surprised Robert & Co. are letting one troll screw up perfectly decent threads.

Problem with the ignore button is even though you don't see the offending member's posts, you still have to sift through the responses.

Instead of hitting ignore, here's a good faith effort to help get the thread back on track. It's a post I put in a similar (and much more informative as of right now) thread last year. Yannadu/Pi2 was all over that one, until Robert banned him/her/it and cut most of the screwier posts out.

And Verdad, Robert seems smart enough to know the qualitative impact of having a troll run amok on his website. We'll see...

Ah, so.

To summarize:

Various people think they can live in DR at various price points. Clearly, conditions are advantageous if you 1) have a near-fluent or better understanding of Spanish and 2) the ability to pay off (or budget without worry to) their apartment or home.

Living in Gazcue (in Santo Domingo) is more expensive than Gaspar Hernandez. However, one will be exchanging city resources (culture, biz/volunteerism opportunities, etc) for retaining personal resources (i.e., cash). The value in that is purely subjective, although it should be noted there is no place in the country more than a half day's drive from any other place.

That said, the consensus appears to be that an expat who has a fair-to-decent command of Spanish and is neither interested in living like a pauper nor an extravagant "Miami Vice" lifestyle can do ok in most towns with $1,500USD a month. Further, from that benchmark, creature comforts dramatically improve at each additional $500 increment until he/she hits around $3,000, which is the "magic" number for living quite well (i.e., an "upper middle" class lifestyle, meaning: nice digs, late model transportation, no shortage of quality food/interesting diversions/very attractive companionship).

On the other hand, a good number think the $1,000-1,499 mark is quite doable, provided a person is willing to share living space and give up certain kinds of comforts they may have become accustomed to back home.

Finally, there are a few who live below (in some cases, FAR below) the $1,000 mark. They get by based on their wits and a willingness to make sacrifices that are substantially below the acceptable level for most.

A few observations:

1) location matters
2) solid Spanish matters more
3) good local contacts are essential (especially when getting set up, as they can help minimize the "gringo tax")

In the end, I suppose the notion of a "budget" depends on your purposes and what you value. I have a friend who lives in Santiago with her two nearly-grown and (very well cared for) children. She works for an international construction company, has her own top-shelf apartment, and travels and enjoys her life quite well. She spends substantially less than another friend, who spends his time and money chasing chicas on the north coast.

Yanadu2,is just like "Pichardo"!
They just post the same agenda items over and over again.Only difference is that Picardo adds "Google Pictures" to "substanciate" HIS misinformation.
Not an "Original Thought" between the two of them!

SORRY Mike, you know I love you guy, but we either get this thread back on course or we have to shut it down.

Please don't argue with Pi2 or whoever, it's not worth the effort.

Just tell us how you live well without spending a bundle of money (except on your boats!!

thanks for the Reassurance, my own Mind went also that way, lol.
but no Jukmbos, please, I prefer my Beers Icecold, and in Jumbos it would get too quick warm or you would need to drink it too quick, he he, so the Pequenitas will stay King on my Carwash Table, lol.

Yes, I surrender unconditionally - neither the robotic floorcleaner or the robotic server has reached this backwater yet.... except for my household.

Still given a year or two.....

Actually my robotic floorcleaner does a good job - the environment is dusty and my apartment is looking a little bit cleaner.....

It is possible to activate the robotic cleaner by remote so when you arrive home the floor is spotless.

You can see your face in the white tiled floor......

so i't Time to get back on Topic, as correctly ordered by HB, and the darn Crap should just be send on Vaca.
------------------------
the Topic is ""Living Costs in the DR"".

so here come's my actual Spendings for an average Month.

Household contains one mid aged Couple, She's Dominican and He doesn't know where to belong to but feels very fine to be called Dominican, a 13 Months old Baby and most Time of the Year we have one or 2 Teenagers in the House which are Boys and Girls we find out there on the Streets, accidentally, in need of getting Azzkicked into the right direction of Life, so we keep 'em for a while, sometimes a couple weeks, sometimes several Months, the longest period been 14month, to send 'em to school or serious Work and get their Act together without their Nuthead Parents.

we live in a 2 Bedroom Beachfront Appartment on the East.

monthly Rent including Gardening and Cable TV and 24/7 Security Guard at the Door is $600.-

Electricity Bill (1 Large modern lowconsuming Fridge and Freezer plus a separate big Deepfreezer, 4 Ceiling Ventilators, A/C only used to cool down the sleeping Quarter before the Baby get's asleep, 3 TV's, 1 PC, 1 Laptop and a Hundred something cellphones charging) varying between 4.300-5.500 Pesos per Month($120-$150.-US)

for Internet I run a 8MB Claro connection which I share with my next House Neighbour over a Wireless Router, Total Coast is with Taxes somewhere over 4.000.- Pesos, so my Share a good 2.000.- Pesos($55.- - $60.-)

2 Cellphones, both with Claro Plans, together around $100.- per Month(Yes, I use mine very often for Business)

Hairdresser/Fingernails etc for the Mrs and the Parttime "Nannis" (the Baby is the only Female in the House not requesting money for such, YET!), runs at around $70.- per Month

for Food Shopping with always extra Eaters stepping by we spend on average $1.200.- per Month, which includes that we like a bottle of good wine once in a while and we buy aside of home grown "Meaty animals" as for the most part the average Angus Beef etc as available at Super Pola, no Fancy Delicatess Store Purchases. the very few Times we eat out of the House You can include in the Bill, there is just no Chef which can keep up with the Mrs, so I prefer to eat Home with the Kiddies.

Gas for my Truck(a 2001 Mitsubishi L200 PickUp, Diesel) runs around 16.000.- - 20.000.- Pesos per Month($$400.- $500.-US), but very most spent on the Road due Business, if I would drive the same Truck just privately the Gas Bill would stay on around $150-$200.- per Month as the Max driving around PC/Bavaro/Cap Cana/Macao on the East

cost to purchase such ole Truck Today ranges $9.000.- - $10.000.-, spareparts available everywhere, a reliable working vehicle.

school costs really vary from Zero to many K's$$$ per Year depending where you send Your Kiddies to school, research that on the separate Topic "Private schools in the DR"

while we purchased over the Years very most of the Furnichures on our oqn, the Appartment's Rent shown above is for the Furniched Appartment, just don't expect the TV to be a 50" LED Flatscreen then.

so what's the Total of above?
around $2.300.- per Month for an average Lifestyle.
we live here with much less Luxury/Amenities than I had available in Germany, but I like/prefer the way to be much happier with the lil bit less here than it was with the bit more there.

most of our Friends spend much more for Living, specially for rents and Eating Out at Fine Dining Places, it is just not Our weay of having Fun, so we seldom participate, even that we coul financially without a problem.
we own as a pleasure sideeffect a little Ranch in the Hills, have Horses and start this Spring a Orange Plantation, but no need to describe Costs for such here on the Topic as I guess it would not be of interest to the average Expats moving to the DR and seeking Info about Living Costs.

I had Times when I spent double of above for myself only plus the Family then inaddition, I also had Island Times when I lived myself only off a Fraction of above costs, all Variations possible, upwards and downwards, by 17 years of Island Life I would say we are located more or less in the Middle of spendings as an average small Family.

oooh yes, I forgot the Medic Insurances.
1200 Pesos for the Wife
1200 Pesos for the Baby,
1200 Pesos for each of my Wife's 3 Sons from Her first Marriage,
4500.- for mine
per Month of course, and very important to have when far away from Mommies Place.

I hope that brings us back On Topic

Lisagauss,

I assume you don't have any house/rental expenses, as I didn't see them on your chart?

Also, where are you moving to? 120k pesos goes much farther in Gaspar Hernandez than in Gazcue (Santo Domingo).

Totally irrelevant, like most of your idiotic posts.

There is inreasing itnerest in robots for houshold chores. Remember 50 years ago few had fully automatic washing machines.....
In Brazil, in major cities it is increasingly difficult to get domestic help and has been priced out of the range of middle class people. Japan faces a rapidly aging population. I first experimented with a robotic cleaner 5 years ago and the results were not good.
But the latest model - wow!T
The Samsung automatic washing machine broke down this year after 5 years use. New model is much superior. It was beyond economic repair but one dollar a week for depreciation does not seem too bad to me.
Pressure cooker is hissing away with the latest batch of beans and icemaker is chuntering. I still do not have analysis of how effective it is compared with byBosch Fridge/Freezer made in Peru would you believe and gives stirling service.
Still in tropical countries steady supply of ice is good.
TV is only 38 inch and can now only run 2/3 hours a day from solar. It is not the latest model with LED,s etc.

Anyhow typical cost of living without entertainment, hobbies etc. in this neck of the woods:
TV/Internet/Electicity/Condo charge ( including waste/water/gardens/security/swimming pool etch. ) 7,500 a month
( 1 bedroom 5 minutes from beach walking )
Food and basic drinks I spend 10,000 a month - approx 300 a day.
Gas for motorcycle 1,000 a month - a gallon roughly a week
Mobile phone seldom used because I have skype 100 a month.
Skype 100 a month.

An aquaintance had an emergency gall bladder operation - total cost 1000 dollars. Over the years I have established a fighting fund for emergency treatment from the money I save from the con-artists in insurance companies.
I prefer to give my money to the actual doctors/nurses etc.
Once you reach a certain age the crooks and shysters in insurance companies are reluctant to authorize major surgery anyway.
I hope this helps anyone planning to settle - basic expenses 4 to 5 hundred dollars a month in a good high amenity area.
If you are prepared to live local maybe 200 dollars a month.

So pi2 even without rent you are paying out in your minimist lifestyle 18,600 pesos or around $500 per month for a single person. Add a typical rent and you are at the $800-1000 per month level.
