Hey Chip
I know they words but would you call friends of the same sex these names too? or are they just for novios/novias? --Would I call my girlfriend Mi Amor? I am a woman--- Would I call the waitress-- Mi amor?
A male friend-- I could call papi-- but would I call him Mi amor?
As an American living in Santiago who speaks relativley good but no means perfect Spanish, the use of "mi amor" is relativley wide ranging, from waitresses to friends/novios/maried couples etc. The use will then depend on the context of which it is used. "Mi vida" can also be used but I definitely feel it is "stronger". You will hear it at times in public between two strangers but you shouldn't infer much from that, just that Dominicans like to be expressive and friendly.
Papi/Papa is used as well but amoung strangers/friends etc. but not as much.
