@LTSteve...where is a good local for visitors in Las Terrenas on the Samana Peninsula? My children's family lives in Santo Domingo, would it be hard to visit both places?

Go back to Canada for the 9 months by yourself
LEAVE YOUR VISA OR MASTER CARD WITH HER
La Republica de Dominicana NO PROBLEMA

What you are proposing is dicey at best
That would be a recipe for disaster but it isn't what he said.

Plenty of gringos marry Dominicans without taking on numerous dependents.

I really don't see what the big deal is here but I suppose he should have just left out the part about finding a nice girl.
That is certainly feasible, realistic, and basically quite natural if that's what one wants.

Why not find a Canadian?
Who can say and who are we to ask?
I know that the implication is that he is a loser who can't get a Canadian but it seems like the vast majority of foreigners who marry a Dominican end up with someone younger and prettier and this isn't a coincidence.
Plus women are not equally approachable and receptive in all countries.

Deep Breath: Take the step.
1) This has been a wonderful thread so far, really.
2) If you can afford to do it, why not one of those Canadian lasses like the Quebequois I fell madly in love with a gazillion years ago...some truly beautiful creatures up North. At least you will know what you are getting for your future. As you may have guessed, the Dominican scene can be truly perplexing and mysterious...What is the old saw? "A mystery wrapped in an enigma?" and surely the chance for 3 months in the Caribbean wold be every Canadian girl's dream???

3) Can you do it? Sure you can. Just stay away from the beaches, hotels and bars and all of the fun places. Go try for work at the institutes, universities, bilingual schools. You will certainly meet a nicer class of person there. Not 100% guaranteed, but after a couple of years (YES, I just said years!) you will start to get the hang of things like dating and family and such. As a bonus you will still have your bank account and know who, where and how to invest in your long term program of 9/3.

There are a lot of pitfalls, but sure, it can be done...

But the humor of this thread should be a warning...

Hot????.........ehhhh....depends who's looking......

I am a 30 something morena who loves skying (I learned growing up in Europe)

I am seriously thinking about marrying a Canadian man and spending my winter there, so that I have access to the beautiful slopes your country has to offer.

I speak English, French and I am nearly fluent in Spanish. My plans would be to spend my winter in Canada and even learn to snowboard.

Assuming I have the necessary drive to make things happen on my end, do you think this is feasible and realistic?

Gracias
Merci
Thank you

:bunny: :cheeky:

Rice&Beans: where can I get a picture of a hot Canadian snowboarder to insert at the end of my post? ;)

Agree 400%

Hmph, you can't blame the girls for using and abusing foreign men can you. Coming on a wife shopping trip at 30 year old, Jesus mannnn, what is wrong with these people, it is relentless and embarrassing to say the least. Embarrassed to be s gringo at times :tired:

I think "wife safari" sums it up pretty nicely. :)

Hi there,

I loathe Canadian winters and am looking to cook up a way in which I can winter in the DR. My work, as humble as it is, allows for that flexibility. I speak English (obviously!), French and a fair amount of Spanish, with the desire to learn more. I'm a thirty-something Canadian man. I have a teaching degree and experience, and would consider teaching ESL for those three months if that option was available, but am open to other possibilities such as getting into business, volunteering, etc.

What I am wondering is if you think it is realistic for me to be able to do this:

Spend three months a year in the DR. Meet an honest DR woman who would come on board with me and be willing to do the 9 months in Canada, 3 months in the DR thing every year, perhaps until school-aged children enter the picture, and then choose either the DR or Canada for schooling. The idea would be to keep a close relationship with both the DR and Canada.

Assuming I have the necessary drive to make things happen on my end, do you think this is feasible and realistic?

Gracias.

No what you are thinking of doing is totally unrealistic.

The main problem being "YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO IDENTITY AN HONEST DR WOMAN" it will take you a few years yes years min... to begin to have a clue what to look for.

Plus the "dishonest dr women" have been practicing on looking like "honest women" to gringo men like you who come with theses fantasy scenarios and know how and are more than willing to fit into your plan until her opportunity arises.

So best advice is to give up on the "wife safari" (i love that word lol) or at least find you a canuck to fit your bill. Trying to date a dominican woman while not living here full time will be hazardous to your health & finances.

The search button on here is your friend unless you are one the gringos who think they are the "exceptions" to the horror stories.

You have been warned...please listen.

Being 30 is not surprisingly part of life if you make it to 31, being 30 is great, I was 30 for a whole year once.
Being 30 and going on a wife shopping trip is frinkin sad and desperate, I don't care how big your model train collection is, how many birds you have spotted, how many pairs of beige chino shorts or chunky multi strapped Velcro sandals you have, you can not be that desperate as to plan a trip with the intention of trapping s wife, destined fir abuse and disaster. At 70 then you can be a bit more sure you are not going to meet someone naturally, great, book a trip to Thailand, or even Republic, shop away. At 30 you should not be on wife safari.

It's searching for an attractive soul mate, not trapping a wife. Since we have no idea of his past romantic history it's hard to make a judgement like yours.

Marry

I say go for it.

Many foreigners marry Dominicans and go back and forth.

Many Dominican men are married to women who stay in the country while the go back and forth to Miami or NY.

This is very common and can be done.

Of course don't expect everything to be peaches and cream all the time.

-When the cat is away, the mice play - be prepared to accept this possibility.

Also, there is nothing wrong with "spouse shopping". Humans have been doing this since the beginning of civilization. Go to any club or bar on a Friday night and you will see people doing this: whether consciously or sub consciously.

Just understand the risks involved and cover your downside risk....but I assume you do this anyway in your daily life in Canada. It just seems that when men and women come down to the DR they lose their head and do things - financially and other wise that they would never do at home.

Good luck

Cobraboy, Crisscolon and Hillbilly: thank you for your help. I also appreciate that you chose not to use the anonymity of the internet to rip into me.

Zap28, I like your style.

I stand by the question I asked. If not in this forum, then where?

Much learned before I got here, much learned here, much more to learn in the future.

Gracias

That is the truth beyond belief, I need to open up myself as I think we all do, is easy to judge and even easier to forget. Flipent statements are made all to easy sometimes.

Zap28, I like your style.

So.... :cheeky: does this mean you're considering it?? lol (or are you hung up on a Dominican woman?? :bored: )

For the record, I'm seriously looking to go there for a month (sans children) at some point to start, longer than a regular vacation to get a feel for it, see if I wanna try longer. Who knows, maybe one day move there? But I have NO clue if I'll truly like it or not, just that I wanna give it a shot. YOUR idea to go during the winter is like a dream!

Damn, I think I am rubbing off on a few!!!!;);)

My sentiments exactly.

Sometimes it is not that easy. I met a girl, told her my whole plan and 3 yrs later i still can't get her to leave. I may just leave lol

In fact the only women I know that were up for it were already travelers with their own "fav places" to live.

Most ppl think it is impossible to leave their home and live abroad. Fears of income etc which are all understandable to be sure.

Gabrielle Union is Haitian, and in my opinion totally DR related!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Union was born in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Theresa and Sylvester Union.[1] At the age of eight, her family moved to Pleasanton, California, where she grew up and attended Foothill High School. In high school, Union was an all-star point guard in basketball and a year-round athlete, also playing in soccer and running track
