I find it interesting that some here seem to blame poverty for a high rate of underage pregnancy (presumably by older males).

The underage pregnancy issue seems to me, to be more related to education, rule of law and morality, than economics (poverty). The poverty argument is a poor excuse in and of itself, unless you believe poor people are more immoral than rich people.
One can be poor, moral, law abiding and educated. Remove these elements from society and society begins to collapse, as many here on DR1 can attest to.

Morality and teaching people to be responsible for their own actions are crucial. I have lived in many poor countries. Those that still had traditional values, religion, and two-parent households fared much better than countries without. Look at all the trouble teenage pregnancy has caused in the United States (a wealthy country). I agree, poverty might not always be responsible for teenage pregnancy, but teen (or pre-teen) mothers are more likely to end up in poor than girls that don't have children so young.

The DR has a tremendous amount of problems. This problem is not only self-inflicted, but also avoidable. The resources do not exist in this country to deal with this legions of underage mothers and their children effectively (really, at all).

Okay, back to the DR (I'll avoid explaining in detail how wrong you are about Europe). The DR cannot support its population. Water, soil, agriculture can only be put under only so much stress. One need only look at Haiti next door to see what happens when people fail to consider such things.

hahahahaha.

comparing the development of Haiti with that of the DR to make a point about resources. now that is laughable. ok; let us agree that the DR has more resources available, therefore the outcomes are different.

so explain how it is that South Korea was a bomb crater in 1953, with far less PHYSICAL capital than the DR, and with even less GDP per capita, and today there is such a disparity in development? do you think RESOURCE ALLOCATION might be at play here in this comparison, not population pressure?

Once again, you don't understand what happened in either Haiti or the Dominican Republic. (No surprise there , either.)

A culture of responsibility

As for Korea, a country I know very well, I can say this: it boils down to a culture which expects, even demands, its people take responsibility for themselves. While not perfect, and suffering from (to different degrees than other countries) problems, Koreans also consider the greater good. Child birth has dropped because Koreans consider the costs of raising and educating their children. I'll leave it at that to avoid being too off topic.

Tell me why you think the DR, which was wealthier than Korea in 1953, ending up being so mired in poverty today.

Ogre & gorgon, this thread is about "babies having babies in the DR".

Please be sure your responses are with that in mind. If you want to discuss other topics, start a new thread.

60% of China's water is now toxic. 20% is polluted with Cadmium. Many countries suffer from water pollution and even worse, severe droughts. There is no longer enough water to go around.

Oil is rapidly nearing depletion. Fracking and oil shale are the results of desperation. Without oil based fertilizers, food production will crash. Without water, well you figure it out. Add to this soil erosion and misallocation of virtually every resource, and we are free falling into the abyss.

Those who argue against depletion are living in a rosy bubble.

You are wrong. No surprises there.

It is pointless to argue about morality with people like you because you have such a spectacularly warped sense of it. I prefer to think logically. No clean water=no life. Not enough clean water=war. Too many people-not enough water and food=mass death.

Children having children is only part of the equation. It's about a culture of irresponsibility.

It's already too late.

I've grown weary of trying to explain things to ridiculous people like you; I think I'll let death sort your type out.

Good to see you back, Joel, correct?

The DR has more resources available than Haiti but also makes better use of what they've got, although they could do much better. For example the DR produces much more rice per acre planted than Cuba. Better planning, more fertilizer, more incentive, and better methods. The DR should be the breadbasket of the Caribbean with it's fertile soil, large agricultural areas, knowledge...etc.
To me it would be worthwhile for the world to subsidize cooking gas in Haiti, and actually pay farmers to grow and look after trees. I'm sure this has been tried on a small scale but the Haitian population really needs to buy into it.
The same thing needs to happen in the DR for garbage control. Massive public and private campaigns and municipal actions to clean up the environment. Making solid waste collection and management a higher priority as well as potable water would do so much for the DR.
Birth control must be available because I know plenty of teenage/early twenties Dominicanas that have sexually active fo quite awhile and are not pregnant. The ones that get pregnant for the most part want to get pregnant.

When I started this thread, I put "DR" in the title for a REASON!!!!!
It is to call attention to the plight of CHILDREN having Children H-E-R-E!!!!!!!!!
SOME posters, MOST of who don't even LIVE here, but only POST like they DO, always try to make all posts about the DR, about everywhere else!
I can understand their motives, ONE, they have their "Personal Agenda's" to promote,(Socialism, Wealth Distribution, and NEVER forget, USA Bashing) none of which are pertinent to the DR, and TWO, they really have little to no actual knowledge about day-to-day living here in the DR!!!!
They don't speak, read, or write Spanish, so they can't even READ,Watch, or Listen, to media ABOUT the DR!!!
If I want to know/post about "Other Places", I'll log on to "EverywhereElse.com"!
When I want to know/learn/comment about the Dominican Republic, I'll stick with "DR1.com"!!!!!!!!!
I really can't understand why anyone with a "LIFE", who doesn't live here in the DR, would waste so much time on a site specifically about the DR????
I guess OUR lives are more interesting than THEIRS??????

CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC
"Proud To Live In The DR"!!!!!!!!!!
"Come Down Sometime"!!!!
"You WOULD learn something"!!!

The banner headline in today's "Diario Libre" newspaper tells of thousands of young Dominican girls giving birth in the hospitals here.
They range in age from 16, down to "10 YEARS OLD"!!!!!!
"10"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????????
The article goes on to say that many have no place to live, and are, "In The Streets".
Quote:,..."Many go on to a life of prostitution, drug addiction, alcoholism and other "Males".
Nowhere in the entire article are the abusers who impregnated the girls mentioned.
AND, notable for it's absence, is that anything is being done by the Catholic church.
"Duh"!
"Go Forth And MULTIPLY" to them means to have "BABIES", apparently as soon as biologically possible!
Maybe, if "Go Forth And MULTIPLY" meant "Learn "Math" in school", things could be different!
AND, where were the "Baby Mami's & Papi's" when these girls were getting "Screwed", in Soooooooooooo MANY WAYS????
At least Dr1's "Pope Of Santiago" must take this as "GREAT NEWS"!!!!!
CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC
:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

Wouldn't this make more sense if you go around the DR and gather up as many mothers of 10 to 16 yr old girls??? Why would you start a thread about a topic which has little to do with ANYONE on DR1, but do not talk to the main culprits of the issue????

You have been in DR since 1990 clearly you would have a voice in the streets of Santo Domingo and women would stop and listen to you about THIER KIDS!!!

This issue should be addressed to Dominicans or are you SCARED to sit a bunch of Dominican women down and tell them they are bad mothers??? I know I would be.

All the off topic posts have been removed.

BEFORE you start typing, please take a look at the name of the thread and make sure it's appropriate and on topic.

Otherwise it's a good bet your post will end up on the cutting room floor....... instructions from the boss!

I've always wondered why people who don't live here or own places here are on this site a lot, it is really odd to me but I guess I am odd to MOST! :D

I can only speak for myself. I have travelled to the D.R often enough and plan to continue to do so often enough to make keeping up with changes a good idea. I have friends who live there, some born and raised there, some born there, raised in North America and returned there to retire or start businesses and return to their Families and some who simply moved there and never came back and I'd like to know what they're dealing with, the daily little things that don't get included in international phone calls but do get talked about while walking or riding around in the D.R. or just sitting around sipping a Presidente.

There is another reason. It's this site. It stands head and shoulders above many others which are dedicated to other localities to which I travel and in topical threads here there is a pretty quick turnaround of information sharing and a wide enough perspective that we get through the BS on badly reported news items there.

Maybe a forum should be started for locals (extranjeros & natives living in the D.R.). I wouldn't be the least bit offended by the exclusion and if it made the folks who are living there full-time feel good about themselves then I'm all for it. I will continue to be a frequent traveller to the D.R. and will probably never live there and lawd willin' and the creek don't rise if the Management of DR1 sees fit to let me hang around here and give and take and share and learn then I will continue to do that as well.

About 40 years ago, in China, government tried with a birth control law: every woman cannot have more than 1 child. Result: an increase in forced abortions, female infanticide, and underreporting. Now they have millions of chinese people with no identity, no documents, no civil rights, nothing. this people lives at the extreme low level of chinese society, nobody knows the exact number, but they are a lot. Population of China is now 1,354,040,000
Birth control laws are uneffective and, in my opinion, a monstuosity, even in case of early ages. Every woman should have the right to choose her age to be a mama
Let's see how dominican government will manage this problem

And that is the crux of the matter - we're talking here about young girls, not women!!! As in "babies having babies".

"AE" I believe that the "OP" of a thread has the right to ask that his/her thread be CLOSED???????
If that is correct, "Please, "Stick A Fork " in my Thread, "It's Done"!!!!!!!!!
To many people who haven't got a "Clue" about the DR, or the Topic, are just "Muddying The Waters"!
Anyone who thinks a 10 to 16 year old girl can make a rational decision about getting pregnant for example!
