This is how Playa Alicia started. Not that long ago.
Which  is why I stifle a chuckle every time I see someone building close to the high water mark on beach frontage. I don't see many locals doing that.

I may be a bad picture, but that beach simply looks ugly.

Who would pay for that 0.0025 square meter of sand with no shade and no amenities/facilities ? :ninja:

Exactly. How many Dominicans do we all know who want to hang out on a beach with no shade?

That might be a low tide pic but it does look like it's growing a little. The hotel folks have to be ecstatic about that. Playa Puntilla?

If I were a business owner, and something like this just popped up "my backyard", I'd hate people coming in and out as they please, just to have access to it.
No shade? No problem! People will find a way to set up a "lona" tent and throw endless "espaquetadas". It'd end up all littered in no time!

the hotel offers better amenities/facilities than most of beaches in DR: there is a restaurant, drinks bar, clean bathrooms, pool. and putting few umbrellas in the sand to provide shade costs next to nothing.

Exactly, it's a win/win/win for them. Have a person to run up and down with drinks and food. And they can even restrict access to non-guests if they feel the beach is getting too full.

And they can add "Private Beach" to their Hotel advertising. (uh oh, I said the P word)

I would hope that's a high tide pic. What little sand you do see there looks wet. I've seen sandbars bigger than that!

I don't think there's any law that would require that hotel to let the general public pass through the hotel to have access to the beach. Now, if you rent a boat to get there, that's a different story. I don't think the hotel could prohibit you from using the beach.

cavok, you beat me to it. The way to go here is to charge for access via the hotel property not for the beach itself. Won't stop everyone but may limit those who aren't willing to pay $10 cuz they probably will not want to pay for a water taxi either. Plant a security guard on the beach in a shaded chair and have everyone remove their own litter.

If the city wishes to provide public access to this strip of sand, then they can expropriate the land, build the stairs and meet the hotel's demands that the public is not a disruption to its operations.

Sounds like the hotel charge is illegal. Hawaii has a law that allows beach goers to walk thru the hotels for free beach access. Personally I think beach should be free. How does a family with kids in a poor country afford the ten dollars each. The hotel does not own the ocean and should not be allowed to prevent people from swimming. The 10 dollar charge looks like a way to stop people rather than raise money. Just my view but all beaches everywhere should be free for everyone to enjoy.

No need to pick up the trash, the waves slam up against the rocks every tide and will clear out all the rum bottles, Viagra wrappers and condoms.

I think you're misunderstanding the law(?). It is supposed to allow the public to use old existing trails and roads through the hotel property - not allow the public to walk through the hotel itself. Even then, if you are denied use, you have to go to court and file suit. Also, in most states, and probably other countries(?), the beach down to the mean high tide line is private property.

Although I tried to express my distaste for a $10 fee in an earlier post, and got a dislike for it too. lmao.. some people have no sense of humor, but thats ok ,we need dry toast too.
but what makes you people think you have a "RIGHT" to this beach which is bordered by Cliffs, and the only access it THROUGH a Hotels Lobby and their Pool Area ? what makes people thinks such things .. this is just silly.
its their beach.. from land..
Now, If you can SWIM to it, then MAYBE you can stroll on it for a momen ,but certainly not through the Hotel Lobby .
whats next , bringing your own chair and Beer Cooler through the Hotel.
just silly

Suppose it were a villa or a string of condos? Does anyone really think they have the right to walk through your villa or condo to get to the beach?

"every tide and will clear out all the rum bottles, Viagra wrappers and condoms."

So you are saying this beach will be used by tourists...not locals! LOL

From the looks of it, I'd say there is hardly enough sand for a beach chair on this new "beach"
I don't see anyone paying 10 pesos, let alone 10 dollars to visit.
