ok, figured out the font thingy... the keyboard still sucks...it's actually not smaller, but it's moved to the left, so my accustomed finger movement hits the wrong keys... some practise on the new keyboard will be necessary

I had a major problem with my new dell with Vista as whenever I typed I would brush the touchpad with a finger or my palm and it made the curser skip around and I'd end up typing a new sentence in the middle of a previous sentence. If that is your problem and you use a mouse there is a way to disable the touch pad every time the mouse is plugged in.

The Master of Vista, Rocky helped figure out how to do the set up.

Now this is a hard one: Marco, if you can help, it certainly would be appreciated:

My Dell laptop's CPU fan has 3 modes - off, low and high (found that via some testing in Bios w/ Dell support).

When it boots up to Vista the fan speed stays constantly in the "low" mode (unless heavy CPU usage, then it goes into "high" mode). It's not buzzing too loud in this "low" mode, anyhow it is buzzing and that's what matters to me. Even if the processor is only at 5% (task manager) the fan keeps on and on.... and never stops. Have tried having it like that for an hour 2 times, and nothing happens ...the fan keeps on, in the "low" mode.

Dell was telling me it was the "feature" of this laptop (new Studio 1735)

BUT...

(by accident) I found out that if I put the system on standby (close and open the lid) ... the buzz goes away, and the fan is stopped (the "off" mode). The fan starts buzzing in the "low" mode when some processing is done and CPU resources are needed, but stops buzzing - gets into "off" mode again - after maybe half a minute and stays that way until new CPU resources are needed.

But if I restart or shut off the comp and get back freshly into Vista, the "low" mode fan buzzing stays on and on ....

It also does the "low" mode buzzing when booting up Vista, and also "stays on" regardless on whether I boot up into the safe mode or full Vista. The only way to get it go away (and get the fan behave "normally") is going into standby and back.

ANY ideas?

P.S. The "low" mode fan buzzing is similar to the fan buzzing seen on desktop computers..which always have some fan buzzing.

Only my opinions

It appears that you have a defective unit. Clearly, one of the two modes is wrong, either that the fan would always be on low in "no usage" conditions, or altogether off.
According to this forum,
OFFICIAL: Studio 17 Owner's Thread - Page 35 - Notebook Forums and Laptop Discussion
the unit is defective and the correct mode would be that the fan turn off in "no usage" conditions, as your does after you have gone in and out of "standby".
It is my understanding that Dell support is outsourced to somewhere in Asia (India?) and getting something done about it may not be a pleasant experience.
The good news is that the fan being on low does it no harm, but the bad news is that it irritates you.
If you have managed to have the mental control to tolerate some of the quirks of living in the DR, you may have the needed mental discipline to do the same for laptop fan buzz.

PS: Searching for a setting that would resolve the problem seems futile to me, as your laptop does turn the fan off in certain conditions, so the settings are correct, but not being "triggered" under certain conditions.

Dell was telling me it was the "feature" of this laptop (new Studio 1735)

"Sounds" like bs to me. I have the same unit (like the backlit keyboard) and my fan usually doesn't run until I start running diagnostics in the background like running anti virus and adware programs at the same time. I keep the house around 72 degrees, so that might help keeping the fan off longer.

My Studio 1735 came with a defective mother board out the box - screen flicker/blackout/random colors.

Dell tele technical support kept insisting it was a program I installed and wanted me to re-install OS and programs. I asked for a return authorization to send the piece of krap back for a refund. That's when they said they would send a tech out to the house and repair the pc.

They replaced the optical drive and mother board and problem fixed. About 5 weeks now trouble free.

Socuban...are you in the DR? If so, maybe we could compare the fan "noise"

Marco, I already had a defective LCD screen with taht model, out-of-the box, called Dell on Thursday night (last week), they shipped the replacement part on Friday, Monday morning at 8 am a tech was calling me to come over and replace it, they replaced a no-name chinese LCD with LG-Philips Chinese LCD :ermm:
I found out it's better and easier to call Dell Latin American support, at least that way I can understand what they say, when I called "english" support I had to ask the guy to repeat every sentence.

I'll give Dell support one more try (different rep) and see what they come up with.

I will also try to boot up into a different IS (e.g. Linux) and see if the problem persists.

btw looks like I might scale back to XP, http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=265631&page=36 as per thread 353

As you are getting good support from Dell here, I strongly suggest you get the fan problem fixed by them, specially if you don't have to return the unit and wait for another.
As for installing XP, it is my opinion that you shouldn't.
Apart from driver problems that you might and likely will encounter, like graphics cards that are not XP supported, the bottom line is this.
I have been running and testing a dual boot up system for well over a month now, Vista & XP and the bottom line is this. Vista with the same hardware (and you need a dual core and 2 + gigs of ram) is more powerful and faster.
That is the bottom line.
I can go over it with you, detail by detail, but that is the net result.
I don't take anybody's word about computers. I do my own tests and I do them until I'm 100% sure of my conclusions, and that is my conclusion, Vista is better, faster and more powerful than XP, assuming you meet the minimum hardware requirements.

I should be there 11/2, waiting to conclude the sale of a boat in SoFlo. I keep an Inspiron 9200 there, but I'll bring my 1735 in case we can hook up.

I will let you know if I get it fixed before that date. The replacement part(s) should have been already dispatched to Dell technician here in the DR by the coming Monday. If I don't get it fixed by the time you get here or I will "feel" there is still something wrong with the fan, I will let you know... so you don't have to bring your 1735 unnecessarily if mine gets fixed.

The laptop's fan and something called "dicipator" were both changed by Dell technician today. However, the same thing keeps going on, fan stays in low after it boots up to Vista and does not stop; but stays "off" or low/off after returning to Vista from standby.

This leads me to belive one of two things: Something's wrong with the motherboard (Dell technician says it's extremely unlikely) or something present in Vista after initial boot-up makes the CPU run to such an extent that fan spinning in "low" mode is required - but the same "something" is not present in Vista after coming back from standby.

I am almost giving up on the issue.

Btw very good support from Dell, 1-business day turn-around time for parts replacement, home calls from Dell technicians. There is a warehouse in SD operated by Unisys exclusively for Dell, they stock thousands of parts (as per chat with this Dell tech) for Dell support calls.

A couple of minor glitches.
Accepted every program except SuperAntiSpyware.
It feels faster than Vista and/or XP.
Lots of really kool perks, but the best, the very best, the totally amazing, like I would have never dreamt................... is that somehow, without even hooking up to the internet, it installed a driver for every component in the lil laptop.
How in the world, I don't know, but THIS IS THE FUTURE.
Computers that truly know what they are doing by themselves and actually help us, instead of keeping us busy trying to make them work.
This is a giant leap forward.
How many times have we seen someone with a laptop with a damaged operating system glitching out and crawling like a snail, and he doesn't dare do a new install, for fear of not finding all the drivers?
Those days are over with Windows 7, I guess.
Now we can sit back and play with our puters instead of fighting with them.

Astounding, incredible, beautiful.

One review site I saw called Windows 7 "Vista that works."

Keep the reports coming. I am particularly interested in incompatibility issues with currently installed programs in Vista that don't work in Windows 7.

In general I tend to be a very late adopter of new operating systems, such as when I am forced to get it because it is bundled with a new computer.
Up 'till now, I have not been able to install an anti spyware program called SuperAntiSpyware. That's it.
Everything else went in fine.
The OS installed drivers by itself and the only glitch I have is that the wifi on occasion does not hook up after rebooting. Have found no real solution but rebooting it once more (less than 1 minute) fixes it everytime.
This OS is so much better than XP or Vista that it is/will be difficult for me to tolerate using them after less than one day of being spoiled by "7".
The perks are too numerous to mention.
If I have time, I will make another youtube clip or two, showing some of the perks.
Navigating this system is super easy and fast.
It is also more user friendly that I could have ever hoped for.
I have navigated around, finding and testing "things" and I more or less know the entire OS already.
It's just that simple.
It's an OS for users, for laymen.
Let the geeks play with the complicated stuff.
This one's for us.
Score it 10 on 10.
