The point is that if something serious happens to you, and you are in the country "illegally", then it isn't going to make the situation easier. I've had some pretty nasty things happen to me in Dom Rep, I think anyone who has lived there long-term has their battle scars. And I wouldn't have wanted to make a bad situation any worse.
TP stop with the scare tactics, brother. If something serious happened, cash is king in RD. An overstayer usually has the cash to pay it off or a credit card for emergencies. With that said, those situations would still be cheaper in RD than it ever would be in the states.

True dat. My neighbor was one of them. When they screwed up (or more likely he screwed up) his social security, he was in a world of hurt.
Anyone who has proper money would of course have the residency in the first place. It only costs about US$ 2000, it's not a huge cost. In my case, without going into detail, there was a very serious situation and my government had to get involved as well as some very senior people in the Dominican government to get it resolved. I'm not talking about being pulled for jumping a red here. And no this wasn't a situation that cash would have fixed. In Dom Rep, contacts are way more important than cash. I think we probably just live in different worlds. If you just come down for a few months, live somewhere reasonably basic, then overstaying probably works. If you run businesses, if you own assets, if you find yourself potentially on the wrong side of powerful people, then you need residency and you need good lawyers. Do you honestly believe that people who invest millions in hotels in Punta Cana overstay? Or people who are investing in new technology?
I was friends with Matilda who you may remember was murdered before Christmas. She translated for a lot of foreign people doing business in DR and I remember a case she told me about where someone had trodden on the wrong toes, set up a business which upset some important people, and found themselves on a plane back home. These things do happen, I'm not scaremongering. If you read the newspapers you'll see that these things also happen to Dominicans, quite often people are murdered or have their businesses burnt down because they upset someone.
