The crazy part is...I have stood in the Dominican Embassy in Canada and have been outright told by officials to not worry about overstaying. Just pay the fine when you leave and enjoy your stay. I have been told the same thing at the Airport in the DR. This is what creates confusion.

If the Dominican Republic was serious, they would state the law. Stop taking overstay. Stop telling people who actually take the time to inquire that all is good.

Maybe they will now but it would help all involved to make this clear with no wiggle room.

Time will tell.

Edit...looks like I got involved in another post about overstays....what is wrong with me? smh

There actually was no overstay. It was a mirage. A legal work around. No LAW provides for it.
All along, you, and millions of others, were subsidizing Margarita and her wife.
Think clearly, do you actually POSSESS an RD tourist card? Proof of one?
Pfffffff.....it went away, just like that. 🎩

I am not advocating one way or another. When you have the authorities telling you it is fine. You get a receipt from the immigration officer. What do you expect?

I am saying, if you have a law...enforce it. Make it clear as a bell at the airport and at the embassy. The grey area's, legal or not, are the problem.

Like I said, time will tell if the new administration will change things. If they do, make it clear...enforce it. No grey areas.

Shouldn't the thread stay open until we see/ have additional information?

Maybe with the special relationship between the US and the DR as seen by inauguration they negotiate some separate bilateral immigration arrangement with free movement between the two countries. Just a thought.

Now this is what I am talking about!! Thanks!!

Very interesting the process is much easier and it's done online now. I was never going to wait in line to get an extension but I'd do this. And lol
it's literally the same cost as the overstay fee lol.

It's not that is the same cost, it's that you are paying the fee. So I still don't understand, you are "legal" with that extension, yet you still pay the fee that is not in the law and your driving license is also not valid after 30 days. By the way the extension was already there since February, all online, you actually still pay when you leave.

According to the webpage above you can pay the fee online before your arrival.

Yes it gives both options, I wouldn't pay it online though, until someone confirms they actually did it and were able to leave without paying again.

I used to pay for my tourist cards online and never had an issue. I'd trust it.

The staying extension website is old news. Has been in place since February.

Was posted on the Migration website back on Aug 4, 2020.

Directly from the website:

The DGM clarifies that the extension of stay DOES NOT exempt the foreigner from paying for the time exceeded in national territory as established by law upon leaving the country.

Sounds like now they get to double dip. 🤣

Pay to extend your stay AND you still have to pay the exit fee.

So whats the purpose of the paying the staying extension ? NADA!!!

Once again everything is clear as mud and nothing will change.

With 85% of tourist coming from USA and Tourism down over 88% percent.

Nobody is going to kill that golden goose that is the "overstay fees"

Like every embassy in world says even the DR embassy.

"Just pay the overstay fees and move along, nothing to see here."

Its not two different payments, it's always the overstaying fee that you are paying. And I agree, for now it is the same.
