I don’t really have a specific political identity. The way you ask me the question it sounds as if you would characterize me as a socialist. Is that so ?
But not as a an evil socialist. But a traditional European kind of reformed socialist lol

Yes I know you guys like to put people into boxes.
John, we central European s do not need those useless categorizations.
we are liberal, social, free and run by real democratic govenments, elected by the citizens, not bought by elected "leaders".
sure we have there also the extreme left and extreme right wings, but over all still managing to stay as a mayority away from any wings
and keep a good balance between"categories".

Back to putting the screws to the overstayers! More to come Monday...
I am not as dogmatic as you on this. I think the system needs to be adjusted yes but maybe the current overstayers should be warned if there is suddenly a change. Give them the chance to leave and then come back and an easier way to legal residency and a snowbird visa option.

I think (and hope) it will play out that way...

A bit more organized.....
The problem isn't Joe Regular... as I have said b4..... it's the squatters
Those who come and stay.....

Some have made the argument that many squatters have invested substantially in condos, vehicles and compulsive purchasing at LaSirena, Jumbo, Ikea etc

It should be easy for them then to get legal residency then. I guess its only a problem if the DR government sees it as a problem.

I doubt those are the majority - but who knows ??

The nose knows..... Weakeyes
I actually have been giving it thought and realize I may have been too harsh. But after reading all the posts, I am reassured that a good thorough enema is needed. Then again, some folks here are big time open borders. Not good for any sovereign nation!

What do your contacts opine on this. You know the ones who you say have property and come and go, refusing to legalize?

I didn’t ask them and its none of your business really. You don’t know me and don’t try to paint a picture of me in your online world of hanging out with shady people. I only know people who come and go and don’t overstay as far as I know. So they live in NA and come to their second home here. Its a completely different thing. That’s actually capitalism. I guess they can afford it.

A friend of mine is now coming up on two years in his attempt to get residency. It used to be easy - not any more. You snooze you lose.
Yes the grace period during the big naturalization push was the time to do this. The amount of paperwork is the same but the scrutiny and duration of various phases of the approval process have expanded

You had indicated you knew people to come and go. That's all. Just asking what their take on it was. No one suggested they were shady, but my you are very defensive

I hope they decide to make it a little easier again. For instance they could lower the requirement of investment in a property. It was very easy 10-15 years ago. In a way its a contradiction making it more difficult on the one hand and then accepting multiple overstaying on the other.

Actually, the paperwork was much less. You didn't have to go to the US and apply for a residency visa with all the time, expense, and paperwork that involves.
