Pants? You can come in your underwear if you want.

Didn't know if it was a cultural thing or not... A No Shorts policy... I read where the dining areas in the resort required men to wear pants...

Although I do have some pretty attractive skivvies... ;)

Nuff said.

Watch out for the pizza thingy, though (sausage, pepperoni).
Having been raised SDA myself, I'm certain that the requirement for seafood is that it must have fins and scales.
Also, that BAM market is geared towards the NA and european crowd. I found it rather expensive.

Fins and Scales it is ;)

Can you recommend a less expensive alternative other then what has already been mentioned?

The only place less expensive then what has already been mentioned would be to pick some Platino off of a tree.

You who know the vicinity, are there no 150 pesos plato de d?a places around Princess / Plaza Bavaro / A Espa?a area? I think that's what the OP asks about.

If you mean me Rubio, I have no clue. The places mentioned are good and economical. Anything less there is no need to even come here.

It's a shame you can't seem to find anywhere you say you can afford to eat. Travel all the way here and have to nickel and
dime everything? You will spend more time and pesos trying to get anywhere here. What have you decided upon so far. If you have never been to DR before I am a little fearful for you with all these problems you are bringing with you. 20th anniversary?

Plaza Turqueza in Cortecito sounds like what you are looking for...several places to eat and a mini mart for groceries......

for a budget of 700 USD you could not find an All I to stay? Maybe not a fancy one but there all certainly decent hotels available for that rate and you would save yourself a lot of stress..Punta Cana is not easy without a car..

ah ha!
in post #39 i have raised the transportation issue. I think this is the missing piece for the OP to enjoy is vacation
I think in the $700 at least $100 for tranportation that will give him freedom to move around whenever he wants
Is it possible to find a private rental Car for $20 a day in the area. or should he try to hire a driver with a car for that week on an on call basis as needed.
to those who live in the area. Do you think if a tourist should be able to drive themselves in the Puntacana Bavaro Cortecito area?
the rest of the money can be spent on necessity foods, upgraded dinners when desired, visit to different beaches in the area, movies, disco clubs or other amusements.
the way I see it that is a $700 that can be spent into the local economy instead of an AI and still enjoy the time

Rent a car in PC will cost at least $50 per day. Most likely even more. The OP cannot afford to spend $7 for dinner, do you thing he can afford a private driver with a car?

He should look for an AI in Dajabon, not Punta Cana.

Rubantin: There is a cheap solution to the transportation issue. There is a public bus (called a gua gua) that runs along the street in front of Paradisus. This street also runs through all the places people are talking about here. You can ride that bus all along that street and get on and off where you want. If you see a place that you think you might like, check it out. For less expensive, your best bet will be the chicken places, like Solo Pollo referenced above. The pizza place near Delicia is not cheap. 500 pesos for a medium pizza, I can eat the whole thing. The owner is Italian and does it right. (Although, I have not been there for about a year - maybe is still same owner.) Delicia de Bavaro is great, but not real cheap either, depending on your definition - I think we pay about 1000 pesos for three meals - cheap comparatively. (I don't remember prices well, usually mucha cerveza before lol.) The gua gua costs 30 pesos for a ride - about 70 cents in US money. A bargain. You can go miles on it if you want - all the way to Plaza San Juan - or beyond. And the other way to Friusa. Not that there is much of anything in Friusa.

Wow! I find it incredible that you could suggest renting a car Here in the most awful dangerous place ever to this poster. My
Answer to all this is that this person stays where he is or as he claims with hardly a peso he can spend not come to PC at all.
Really....the worst drivers and, very very
expensive...does poster know of All the additional taxes the DR tags on. If not can someone else please explain to him clearer
than I can? Again a car? A private driver (heaven help with the always distracted drivers)! Poster I suggest you do not do any
of that.

Thank you all for your input. We leave for the airport tomorrow morning. I love to explore. The bus would not be a hazard to us but rather a cultural experience. I have lead out in 7 different high school mission trips to central and south america. My wife and I are very adventurous and love to explore. Unlike many, we do not want to hibernate at the resort. Enjoy time at the beach then go explore...However, we are also on a budget. If necessary we can do rice and beans in a crock pot in our room...lol.

I have compiled all the recommendations here for our use.

Thank you all for your input it is greatly appreciated.

We are here and have been taking everyone's advice. We walk about 15 minutes from the resort to pollo bollo, Delicias de bavaro, and a new pizza joint so far... All very good food within our budget... Really enjoying the local culture. We are finding good alternative transport between the gua gua, resort buses, motorcycle taxis, etc. Been here 2 days and spent less than $70 on transport and food. Thanks for all your help.
