we should have some good money games after tournament play on both days....we got some great regulars mostly expats from Costambar/Cofresi and some tourists and dominicans in the mix......should be interesting weekend....there will also be an international DJ with a vocalist playing sunday night upstairs in the LightHouse Lounge if you like House/Dance music.

whats the payout?

Yes, the purse is guaranteed by the casino if the tournament does not get entry fees to cover the RD 1,000,000 purse.

What will be the payouts for first place, second place, third, etc.?

How are taxes done, if at all?

Thanks.

So how did it turn out?
Get enough players?
Who won?
will this be an annual tournament?
Can anyone just sit around and watch? (while sipping tequilas)?

aaah. the tournament is April 28-29th.

right now we have 35 players paid up but we expect a lot to sign up on Saturday right before it starts. My guess is we will have around 80 but this is tough to tell as there will be so many late entries. There is buzz around it in Santo Domingo as we had a sponsor put up money for advertising.

We are calling it the 1st annual RD 1,000,000 Ocean World Poker Tournament and hope it will get bigger every year, depending on the outcome of this one of course. It won't be easy to manage with players that speak only English and people that speak only Spanish.

You will be able to sit around and watch, I cannot tell you exactly how close you will get as an observer to the action but the tournament will be held on the regular casino floor. You will be able to watch relatively close, my guess about 10-20 feet. Once we put up the extra tables on Friday I will know more.

Yes you can sip tequila or join money games after people start getting knocked out.

Darn! I keep forgetting what day this is!!.....Er, What day is this anyway?

Where's my tequila bottle?

Don't mess with me, Jose Cuervo!!

Sorry Conchman, I don't mean to make light of this. I know it's gonna be one hell of a tournament that'll provably become big time over the years and attract gamblers from all over. I wish you the best of luck as you seem to be one of the organisers. Veni, vedi, veci!
BTW, Whatcha gonna do about the drunks!!??

PS What is the distance from Puerto Plata ?

Starting Stack is 15,000 chips.
Blinds starts 25/50 and will go up every 30 minutes.
Distance from Puerto Plata is 4 miles.

Tournament entry fee of RD 15,000 includes tickets to shows, park admissions, t-shirt, cap, etc...see flyer for more information on top of this thread.

To Conchman

Since I am not able to be there this year, is it possible for you to post the results,( who won , how much, how many etc), as a follow up. I and I am sure others would like to hear. Thanks in advance. Wish all entries the best of luck. ;)

any Tournament update ?

55 players in, 16 left after first day. Arthur, biggest guy, biggest stack, almost 20 % of the chips, pro, will probably cruise to victory.

I like the initiative of having a tourney like this to attract players. Unfortunately the tourney was extremely slow; foremost because of the quality of the dealers. We were down to 8 hands in a 30 minutes session...The Antes were also a reason for the slow play, since the dealers had a hard time counting and changing the ante money. Better to have the antes the 2nd day only. This was the first year, so next year (if..) it will probably be better. Hint for the casino: The tourney was supposed to last from 2 pm to 8 pm but ended after 10 pm... Most of the players were very tired (me included) and were not that interested in the cash games (where you were supposed to make money)... If it would have ended at 8 i am sure that you would have had a lot of cash games.

Also, about the cash games. Ocean world is in my opinion the nicest casino on the island (been to most of them) but the rake... Ok for gambling, vacation, recreation, fun, money spending BUT for playing poker - the rake is huge.

It is sad to hear that this big tournament had not been so much real poker playing. With only 8 hands/blind level it sounds more like a lottery !
Like all weekly tournaments with 20-50 bb starting stack and 10-20 min. blind levels.

BTW, tiring is one important competition factor in tournaments.
It divides winners from loosers.
I can't imagine any serious poker player would participate in WSOP main event, unless he is able to play over 10 hours/day, 5-7 days in a row!

Not so much the hours, but the fact that it was so zzzzzzzzlow and u get irritated by misdeals, discussions about antes, chip count etc.. It felt like a week... A funny thing. Before first hand was played, the guy next to me asked the dealer if it was fixed or no-limit and the dealer answered "No se". Yes, he went out first at our table... Once again, this was the first time the
tournament was held and I like the fact that people try to do something nice. Hopefully and probably the casino learned a lot from this tourney and make it better next time. The casino invested a lot in this event. Entry fees did not cover the prize pool - buffet and drinks free for the players, free tickets to Ocean world events etc.

I understand Your feelings very well. I usually get too bored, when playing in the internet and somebody is thinking over 10 seconds!

Pierre from Costambar got 2nd place and I managed to get 3rd!

Was quite an experience, one I'll never forget. Arthur is a great player, his defense once he was big-stacked was impregnable, couldnt trap him with anything. He just let Pierre and I battle it out once there were 3 left.

Its very tiring, to concentrate so long, but great fun.

Yes, there will be changes next tournament around but overall the feedback was extremely positive. For the Dominican Republic, it was very well organized.
