The Dominican Organization of Shopping Malls (ONEC) is protesting the lenience of the government in allowing Chinese businesses to operate outside the law.

Large consumer goods stores set up by Chinese nationals are investing big to set up large stores in Dominican cities. El Dia reports exponential growth of the Chinese businesses and says they are taking advantage of the country’s regulatory weaknesses.

“Today we see them in all the provinces of the Dominican Republic and, above all, they now compete with large and traditional stores,” says Jennifer Troncoso, executive director. of the National Organization of Commercial Companies (ONEC).

Previously mostly into love motels or food businesses, the Chinese have expanded tosell clothing, footwear, plastics, as well as hardware and household items (be they furniture, glassware), household appliances, auto decorations, cosmetics...

Cheap quality goods that will be useless in six months. This country is going to need a lot more landfills.

The Chinese are just meeting the demand. The average Dominican couldn't afford the quality version of the cheap Chinese products sold here.

I appreciate the stabs my esteemed colleagues have taken at this Chinese deal, however let's not take our eye off the ball. China is not putting its people here just to sell goods to meet a demand. I think we all know the objective is much greater. Much greater.

Don't be so hard on the Chinese. The Cabarete boys love their Chinese restaurant. Mainly because it's cheap.

I just picked up some Chinese food from there tonight. It was packed! Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the restaurant that opened in their old location. I feel sorry for the guy. The place looks nice inside and he has a good menu. I'm going to have to give it a try.

Amazon and many others sell exactly the same stuff you can buy directly at Aliexpress but at double or triple the price. Funny how people think they get a better product when they pay more.

They've been there for a while. I'm guessing it's not that good or word of mouth would have filled it my now.

Dream on. Do they health-check every product that comes into the U.S.? Throw away everything that has chinese parts in it and you will end up with an empty house. Whether we like it or not.

Surely you are intelligent enough to realize that every country produces high end products and low end products?

Obviously the cheapest product does not equal the most expensive.
It's up to the consumer to do their due diligence and to inform themselves of product quality, price and cost effectiveness.

The Chinese are the second Nation to land a spacecraft on the moon and return with samples.
Chinese technology is in many areas far advanced, on their own research.
They are far from being bumbling idiots.

They are a communist dictatorship and in competition with the West and democratic governments.
The Chinese are not our best friends.

Yet it would be less than intelligent to pretend that they are incompetent.

The political and economic systems will show over the long run what works in the real world.
Of course long range planing is of the utmost importance,
Not four year short term election election cycles.

The DR is capable of controlling which Chinese investments it wants
And which Chinese businesses it allows to operate at which level.
Wether cash transactions for tax evasion purposes are allowed, a model which small Chinese businesses like to use in many countries.

Yet the DR does need Chinese investments in DR infrastructure.
However the DR has to be astute, as not to become victims as some other countries have become allowing Chinese investments in airports, ports, or roads.

Real information is available to any Nation, if the governments want to attain it.

I think there are containers A & B that ship from China. Container A (better quality higher cost) goes to North America, container B (low quality cheap junk) goes to developing countries. Am I right?

I drive by there almost every day, many times around 4:30pm-5:00pm when the Chinese restaurant would be packed. About once a week I'm going by around 10pm when the Chinese restaurant was closing, but there were still many customers inside finishing their meals. There's almost no one ever inside the new restaurant.

I don't think he knows how to promote a restaurant(?). He never has one of those chalkboards outside advertising a happy hour nor any specials of the day. He should also have a menu outside IMO like all restaurants on Cabarete Beach have so people can see what he has to offer and what the prices are.
