.... after making a "donation" to the government official (13,000DP) , our Haitian gardener was released last week. He had been in a holding cell in a town on the north coast.

Now the hard part comes - trying to get him to work in our community without getting nabbed again.
That's true. I have heard that the many Haitians that remain in Las Terrenas are not working, just hiding, because as soon as they go to a construction site they are arrested. How they are surviving I have no idea but what worries me is that they may have to go out at night and steal in order to support themselves and families.

Congratulations.
You have played a role in furthering corruption and facilitation of human trafficking.
A problem the Dominican government (at the top) appears to be very interested in eradicating.
100% he'll be deported again and next time he may do some jail time (according to the new bill if passed)
if they captured his bio-metrics.
You beat me to it. Some questions for the legal eagles:

1) Is not the accepting of a bribe by an official to release an illegal alien a crime? (Of course the answer is a yes on this one, the consequences of such officials being caught is in the news.)

2) Is not the paying of a bribe to get an illegal alien released a crime? I suspect a yes answer in this one.

3) If the payer of such brbe is made by a "gringo", could they not be permanently deported for doing so?

Last I heard even after deportation can get back with about 10k pesos. They just cross the river on foot about 100 meter from the border bridge in Dajabon, then get a guagua back to Santiago, the money is for the driver to pay the few police and army checkpoints on the way..., easy peasy ...!

I wonder if the new crackdown of those helping the illegal Haitians will change the cooperation of those drivers??

My Haitian kid came back last month after a 2 week family visit. It cost him 1800 pesos to get here.

Me thinks this could end up biting you in the ass......

Think about it ..... They know exactly where they picked him up, and who bailed him out.... what's to stop the all knowing Immigration Officer to 'camp' out by your place on his day off just looking for your worker, and when he shows up calls his buddies from immigration to do a 'inspection' and have their hand out, because they know that you have already paid once, why not again, but this time directly to him and his buddies, where they get the cut and not some hire ups....

Or worse, they take you in for questioning for helping an illegal immigrant. As I said before, if you want to give a bribe, always do this through a trusted Dominican who knows how to do it without getting you involved.
