From Pres. Trump's speech to Congress last night--

Nations around the world, like Canada, Australia and many others --- have a merit-based immigration system. ."

Someone went to a nursing home and noticed that almost everyone there, from the doctors down to the home attendants and cleaners, were immigrants.

So if only the doctors and maybe the nurses are going to be admitted, who is going to bathe ageing incontinent people, or swab the floors? Trump and his kids?

Now why wouldn't the USA want these types of immigrants, especially as many have degrees in STEM, healthcare and finance/accounting?

You have completely missed the point. Legitimate immigrants who apply through the established processes, especially the well educated ones are welcomed and assessed on a case by case basis. It is the border jumpers, refugees, people brought to the US illegally at a young age that are been weened out. The US no longer wants people to choose to come to the US just because they can sneak in.

Those who entered illegally may be granted permission to stay and even offered a path to citizenship but they will only be allowed to sponsor their immediate family, not every relative they know who also wishes to move to the US. I'm all for not rewarding those who broke the law originally, and where sending them home after decades in the US might be a bit unfair. The fact that they were permitted to be there so long is the fault of the US Govt.

Don't let illegal aliens enter the US. Catch those who do enter and send them back at the earliest opportunity. No more of this well you're here so I guess you can stay ...for now.

The changes in immigration policy for the most part to not apply to or affect those who are educated, have skills, are not criminals and who apply before showing up at the door.

This is a great thread and speaks to the worthlessness of the Dominican American experience. I am so tired of "them" with their surly attitudes, obnoxiousness and ostentatious displays of "Wealth".

There is no way around it, we have wasted our opportunity to assimilate into the greatest society known to man and instead prefer to revert to our 3rd world cesspool way of live.

Speaking of whom?

Pedro Martinez, David Ortiz, Alex Rodriguez, everyone of them Dominican, great a what they did and have excelled past their sport skills set....way beyond in fact.

But the most important and eccentric individual feature is that they remind so humble to date, despise the fact that they are multi-millionaires!

That speaks "to the worthlessness of the Dominican abroad?"

actually, it appears that it is you who have missed the point. most of what passes for scholarly analysis is little more than background interference. in case you have not been paying attention, the single aim is to alter the racial and ethnic composition of the USA, in response to the alarm caused by research which shows that in the not too distant future, the minority will be the majority. so, Dominicans, and people who look like them, will soon find that it is not illegal immigration which is the issue, but that the quotas for legal immigration will be drastically reduced, while those of countries like Norway will be increased. not that Norwegians are going to bite, because only a handful, a few hundred, apply for green cards each year, anyway.

Thank you for stating the obvious Gorgon. What do you think "make America great again" means?

everybody knows. some just refuse to admit it, because it might cause people to look at them in an unfavorable light. some of the very same people have no problems coming to the DR and living their lives in comfort, but they don't want Dominicans going to the USA and upsetting the balance.

Just a reminder...........From Windeguy's Post #8.

This is not Off-Topic.

And I will repeat. The Dominicans are among the best, if not the best, at milking the system in the US. My family is Dominican, I sponsored my step daughter to be legally in the US. I hear directly via family members about what goes on with them and their friends in the US.

i agree. they rank right up there with Wall Street types, in Brooks Brothers suits, who fleeced the poor, then fleeced the government. they also compare favorably to the guys who used to charge the Pentagon 500 dollars for a 15 dollar toilet seat. and, yes, the guys who bilked the medicare and medicaid systems for bazillions of dollars.

yes...Dominicans might want to claim the trophy, but the competition is fierce.

A-Rod is Dominican?  Who knew. I always thought he was From PR.  Obvo I’m not a sports fan.  Usually I follow athletes after they date a Kardashian.

There are exceptions to every rule. These are the 1% of the 1% of their specific profession.

A-Rod humble?  That’s a laugh.

A-Rod was born in Washington Heights in NY City, which I guess is part of the DR.
At least it seemed that way when I visited that location, I thought I was in Santo Domingo.

And statistics likely support your premise.

There is an older but sobering study that shows that 38% of all Dominican immigrants have less than a high school education;

That they have the highest usage of "means tested programs" (aid) of the larger immigrant groups with 63% getting some type of public assistance.

As Dominicans now comprise the 6th largest immigrant group the US.........those statistics lend themselves in supporting a merit based immigration policy currently being put forth.

i find it very interesting that people are quick to point out the use of welfare benefits among those lazy Dominicans and other such dusky types, but when the subject is raised, nobody has the courage to look at stuff like this..

I fail to see how one small group of crazy wack jobs in Kiryas Joel, N.Y is significant in the big picture and how it even relates to Dominicans in the US. Statistics have been posted on Dominicans and I have first hand knowledge of how well they milk the system.

you are a New York guy. i am surprised that you are unfamiliar with the percentages of Hasidim in Williamsburg who were on Section 8, while their husbands were working in the diamond district.

I am from NY State. I have almost no experience with NY City having grown near the state capitol up about 200 miles from NY City. I might as well have been in Ohio. I have been in NY City more times since I lived in the DR than in the 38 years I resided in NY, but not in the diamond district.

Your example above could be a reason some people are anti-Semitic.

From the US government census on means tested support:

The black population: At 41.6 percent, blacks were more likely to participate in government assistance programs in an average month.
o The black participation rate was followed by Hispanics at 36.4 percent, Asians or Pacific
Islanders at 17.8 percent, and non-Hispanic whites at 13.2 percent.

https://www.census.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2015/cb15-97.html

It is interesting when people point out how many people are on such support, but fail to use the percentages of such groups.

A cherry-picked anecdote to support your "academic" proffer is funny stuff. :cheeky:
