As a gringo hooked on Presidente the last 7 years I can you there is no distinguishable difference between what you get here in the DR and in Florida. I currently live in Santiago and have at least a Jumbo a day but while on my frequent work trips to FL I typically have three 12 oz's a day.

While it is almost a given that Dominican's in the States will tell you to a "t" that the Presidente is different I attribute this to the very prevalent dynamic of "heresay" that runs rampant in this country.

A good example of this "dynamic" is the peculiar desire Domincans have for Miller Beer here which is typically only drunk by drunks and soon to be drunks in the States. However, when more than one Dominican here in the DR says it is good therefore it will be good to them no matter if it tastes like backwash. I always put the guys at the local supers in stitches when I tell them only "vagos" will drink that stuff back home whenever a local tipo "prive en fino" shells out R65 for a small bottle of that swill.

To deny this very strong and peculiar "Dominican" dynamic would be to deny reality. Case in point - the "espasmar" of the mouth when one is hot and suddenly is cooled by the fridge or cold water. I have only been able to convince one person here in the DR that this belief is hogwash, and believe me I have tried - with professionals, Doctors etc and of course the wife. My father in law is the only one who now says that this old rumor is a load of nonsense and in fact cools himself with cold water frequently when he is hot. I guess after seeing me do that for so many years during the times we lived with them and visited, he figured I wasn't crazy.

:) If I could get a couple of cases of Presidente in the 22 ounce bottles I would drink probably one or two an evening but I can't get it here :(

I'm stuck drinking Budweiser, Sam Adams and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale which honestly are not half the thirst quencher that an ice cold Presidente is.

At first I thought my love for Presidente was just nostalgia from my many wonderful days in the DR but in reality I have not found a better beer from any where in the world at ice cold temps. Now at room temp. or a little warm Presidente loses some appeal for me but you just can't beat it ice cold!

A good idea to get Presidente where you live is to contact a local "package", or Wine and Spirit store and have them special order it for you. Expect to probably pay US15 or more per 12 pack. I typically pay US12 to 14 in Orlando.

As a gringo . . . I currently live in Santiago

So, this is the old Chipoo. Where in the world have you been? I spent the month of July in the DR (in Salcedo). I went to Santiago and as I was coming out of La Sirena, an ugly gringo driving a black 4x4 with a beautiful Dominican lady next to him passed by.

If you read the whole thread you will find out that it is the very same beer that is sold here in the DR. I have been drinking Presidente exclusively in the US and the DR for almost 8 years now and can tell you there is no distinguishable difference. I find it odd that 99% of Dominicans in the US will tell you they taste different etc. but I can only attribute that to the "hearsay dynamic". After all, a bottle ofl MGD here sells for more than a Presidente and the Dominicans who can afford it say it is better! I drank the stuff when I was a dirt poor student at college - the fact is the only people who drink it in the States are the ones who can't afford a real watery beer like Bud! Neither of which compares to a cold Presidente, in the US or the DR. Nadie va a tombar la Presidente!

A couple of months ago the Miller Brewing Company became the sole importer and distributor for Presidente in the USA. Hopefully that will lead to a greater availability of product. Miller, as most of you probably know, has signed an agreement with Molson/Coors to begin a merger following government approval. It is hoped that it will take place by July of 2008.

This is true..1st. It is served much colder in the DR.
2nd. You are in tropical weather so it is suppose to taste better because you believe it is being it is produced there.
3rd. It is probably very slightly different in taste because it is not as fresh due to it being shipped out of the country in shipping containers then held for customs clearence at the port of destination. An over heated container will change the flavor but not by very much..It is up to the vendor who sells it out of the DR to keep it as cold as in the DR..

Ever get a Presidente after the power has been out for a day..They start selling it as soon as it is cool enough but not as Cold as it should be..An AI always will have it ICY cold because they have their own backup power so do most Large hotels..And colmados...Other than that I see no reason for the difference in taste...

I think this is one of the oldest discussions on this board. To me, and I'll say it again TO ME it tastes different. I once brought 2 peque?as from NYC down to the DR and compared the taste. The ones from NYC tasted a bit more "sour". I also had 3 other heavy presidente drinkers do the test and they all agreed with me.

From my understanding, Presidente in DR has a 6% alcohol content........no way, it has that much alcohol content in the US variety, by law.

I think beer in the US is 3% alcohol by law. I'm not sure though. I think that is what NY1 was trying to say.

For the top 100 US brewed beer brands the alcohol content varies from 2.8% for Pabst Extra Light to 6.5% for Red Hook IPA.
US beer alcohol content is by weight. Most of the rest of the world is alcohol content by volume.
Barleywine is the is the highest alcohol content at 8-12%. Stout is 5-10%.
