Reminds me of what a friend of mine did, when we were students.

His family moved in the higher circles, and they had some big get-together one evening. This coincided with some big party at the university, and my friend wanted to attend that instead of the old boring party at his parents house.

In the end they negotiated the deal that he would show up before midnight, to say hi to the guests. And his parents insisted on him wearing a tie...

He showed up at around 11.45pm, wearing a tie, and his speedos...

His allowance was cut for a couple of months I believe...

DVB,

What exactly are your rebelling against ?? Why do you think you need to "rebel" ????

You say:"i just do not like to be forced into doing something i do not want to do." Well welcome to civilization.......

You sound like the stereotypical American teenager and now a growing number of adults who seem to have the maturity of 13 year olds.

How about letting go of your narcissism, egomania, and anti-social behavior. Flaunting social convention simply for the sake of doing so - or worse to needlessly antagonize neighbors, friends, and family does not make you cool, hip, or progressive - which it is clear that you think you are. It makes you arrogant, cruel, petty, and immature. Try and respect the people and their culture - especially when what they are asking - is in the big scheme of things a relatively minor imposition on you.

Dominicans just so happen to place a high value on being groomed, clean, smelling good, looking good. It's called have PRIDE and Self Esteem in oneself -it's something we used to value in the States - before society became so demoralized .....men walking around with their butts showing, and women walking around in Pajamas or walking out of the house looking hell-a-mess.

Thank god the Dominicans behave they way they do.....its a sign that they are not yet culturally demoralized and still have pride. There is nothing wrong with being time and place appropriate with your dress - especially as it relates to specific cultural and social expectations - in fact the integrity of civilization demands this. Behave yourself.

DV8:

As one of the loveliest of creatures, anything you wear will be honored to have you as the wearer....even if the puppies might come out.

I might crash that wedding in the Centro Espa?ol just to see you.

Enjoy it and have fun, that's was weddings are for!!

Abrazos..

this is exactly what i rebel against. THIS. thinking that every peg should fit into the round hole, and especially this damn troublesome square peg, and we’ll bloody polish the sharp edges off it until it does look like the rest of us.

when i moved to DR people here on dr1 kept on saying i have to change. i have to forget who i am and start being someone else to fit in. i have to compromise. you know what is a compromise? something neither of the sides wants to do. how is that a compromise?

i stayed pretty much myself. i talk the talk but i do not walk the walk. i speak the lingo and i can make things work here. look at my posts and tell me i do not give an honest, albeit humorous advice and info about DR. but i am still me. a square peg in a world of too many round holes. and the only thing wearing off are the creases of my patience trousers, not my jagged sides.

you know what makes me rebel? a notion that there is only one and only way of being a mature grownups: working your arse off, breeding kids like a rabbit on viagra, paying taxes and wearing sequined dresses to weddings. you call me immature? what gives? the fact i spent four lonely years in london taking care of myself, not missing a single bill payment and juggling school and two jobs? you call me pathetic and arrogant? is it because now jobless i take care of our house, miesposo and our pets including a retarded cat with epilepsy my mother in law tells me to put down? you call me cruel and petty? is it because of that my friends know they can come to me for honest if harsh advice? and keep on coming to me whenever they are in trouble?

no, my man. this is not a christmas play in primary school hall. this is life. and it contains a lot more that a right and self-righteous ways of living. i leave you to your prim following other sheep to the greenest pastures. let me drag behind chomping on dry thistle.

...........................

You may have 228 posts on this board, but you sure the hell don't take the time to get to know the people on this site.

You did not even get her DR1 username correct. It's DV8

lol.. be a rebel for a while and you'll see other people start copying your style! .. i wore shorts in la vega and absolutely none of my friends would be caught dead in shorts and sandals like me.. i did it for about 6 months and i can now proudly say about half of my friends will wear shorts and sandals out now haha .. they will do whatever they feel comfortable doing, as long as they aren't the only ones doing it.. it's too goddamn hot out right now anyways, i don't want to melt out there !

. any one has a story about black sheep in their dominican families? ?

I'm the black sheep of my Dominican family: Only one to let his hair grow long in a family of "real" men and women (big deal, right?), avowed leftist in a family that values conservatism, dating girls half my age, and lastly, an unapologetic atheist in a family that comes from la tierra santa de Hig?ey, and whose members are close friends with obispos, padres y monjas... yes, I know all the rituals and an obispo even washed my feet once at a ceremonial mass during holy week.

But I'd still go to the wedding and have fun and flirt with married women.

So, wear whatever you want, since you're white, rich and foreign. And as To?o Rosario would say, 'Se?ore, hay que dej? de habl? caball?: blanco e' blanco, lo dem? e' pendej?.'

ha ha ha. miesposo has an uncle like this, married to an ostentatiously religious woman he is a new born atheist himself. i think he lost jesus after they got married. and he is a leftist too. cool to talk to because he is smart and dry.

yeah, being a foreigner has good sides too. dominicans pay little attention to your antics because you are gringo estupido. doesn't know any better, poor thing, must have an additional chromosome or something.

Really? I think she's funny, insightful, intelligent, and downright honest. And I bet most folks here would agree with me, and I don't even know her, not even through PM.

so chew on your broken glass...

I am happy that there are people here who are individuals, with their own pecularities. I like people like that. At least you can have interesting conversations with them. And people like Deviate appreciate people who are different as well.

You might not agree on everything, but that is what makes it interesting...

Why do you want to talk to somebody who agrees on everything you say or think? BORING!!!!

I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting DV8 personally, but I have profited from her advice on this board. Sometimes it is harsh, but always truthfull.

So, DV8, go to this wedding in the black and white leopard dress, show them who you are. Respect for someone does not come with a dress or a suit, but with the behavior.

And please show us some pics of you in that dress...

ok, some closure, i think, may be in order, since the wedding season is temporarily suspended - no more happy coupling till december :)

in short, wedding one was boring, despite beautiful setup and 100.000 dollars price. tradition is costly, as it seems :)
just before the wedding i was given yet another dress :) but i decided at the very last moment not to wear it: it was uncomfortable and god knows if was going to suffer hunger and boredom i could not bear tight outfit.
so i wore my original plan for wedding one: long flowery dress:

wedding two was set over two days and was a total opposite of anything i have seen so far. i take all "no rebellion" talk back :) no merengue band, but a bulgarian violin player accompanied by two DJs. no shrimp salad but grilled churrasco. no posh outfits but young people dancing in the rain and jumping into the pool!
unfortunately due to the weather my leopard print dress was not on the books. i did wear sequined blue dress thou, on day one:
