Chip ... you're probably right about his natural ability to learn languages. And for all I know, he may have studied other languages before Spanish. I also know that I and others who have used that same program are not at that same level with Spanish (although we may be far ahead of others). Of course he, like you, did a 'complete' immersion in the language. He mentioned somewhere that he lived in a Dominican apartment building in Puerto Plata, so I assume that he stayed in a Dominican neighborhood.

The program, LSLC, is actually pretty good. It does what it promises. It can give one an awsome base in the language. BUT, there is no substitute for living in the language (after you have the basics down.).

I only wish that someday I can be as fluent as you or him. I guess that I'm just gonna have to move to the DR!!!

No it was my first second language. So i can't say if I have any ability. I just trhew my all into it. And made it my job. That sure helped. I stayed in el Batey and hung out in Sosua Abajo, Maranatha, Charamicos, and San Fran de Macoris.
I avoided any and all tourists, expats. In fact those who became my student were like you lived on Super super block and I have NEVER spoken to you. How? and i say, because Im not living here to drink in Britania, I'm here to drink in the frikkin carwash or por el rio jugando a los domininos. Eating in Susana's not, Maui Mau.

I would say outside of moving, a mostly spanish speaking significant other or group of amigos can work pretty good. But you have to be more mindful to imitate.

I thought that NYC__TRINI__SPAN was a chick!! Sorry/

The guy does okay with Spanish, heavy accent, but he does okay and can certainly get along pretty well...if this is alll self-taught, he is to be congratulated.

I'm pretty sure I met him one day a couple of years ago in Sosua at Eddy's Sports Bar. He was walking around with flash cards & even gave myself and a friend an impromptu test of our Spanish.

He was super focused on language, Chip... so he could well have accomplished this in a couple of years. He seemed to live and breathe it.
Wow! That was me. I lived in the house next door to Eddy's.

My flashcards are my ONLY way to learn new verbs (for me) LOL. I'm so sorry if I tested you, I have a bad addiction to spanish and learning it. But I also feel you "live and you learn" at the same time. I hope I bought you a beer, mano!

No es por la cu?ada

ah right so your brother has a dominican wife that would help with learning......

I could agree more with that if I was around them often, but really she was one of the people who made me realize my need to self teach because her responses are "i don't know, it just IS said that way" lol They are from San Fran de Macoris..... maybe you don't know... they speak UBER fast, I could never learn by speaking with them alone. Perhaps having slow speaking haitian girl and then a medium paced dominican GF while i was in Sosua, helped.

What helped was the 6 months of ESL i did BEFORE moving. It was volunteering for free, but it was well worth it in the end. Also, how much do you learners immerse yourselves. In the first 9 months of study I was watching TV everyday, and it hurt, but i did it. Radio all day, even at the desk. Sticky notes all over my mom's house when i lived there. I didnt take them down until I knew them, and with my mom's anger over the 2 million mini stickies I made sure to conciously study them.

As for the guy who congratulated me on self teaching, thank you. How heavy is the accent to you. It's rusty in that vid as well.
