Good question. I have lived here for fifteen years and have never felt the need to have one. None of my friends here have them either.
Been here for just over thirteen and I've never felt the need to have one either.
I do know several Dominicans who own/ carry guns but all of them are business owners.

By comparison, I don't know anyone back home who doesn't carry a gun with them like a
set of car keys.

I have been offered one by the widow friend of ours whose husband died of cancer. Nice navy colt 45, was registered in his name and he did all the licensing, ballistic tests...etc. They had a colmado in Los Alcarrizos, and it was necessary. I decided it was too much effort.

you should have taken it. A Gun like this goes easy for 6-8k today. A Taurus goes for 10 k and a Glock 19 reached 16,000$US.
It's insane.

..and no one is paying 17.000 U.S for a handgun, no one.
Show up with a legal glock 19 and i send you the links of at least five (5) armerias thay give you 1 million RD$ (17,000$US) right after depositing it.
People are advertising that they will buy this gun. There are no legal Guns ! Give it a try; Advertise a Glock 19 for Sale (or any other nice Pistol) on corotos or Lapulga etc and i guarantee you that you will get 50 messages within 24 hours.

Many of the locals I know that own and carry a pistol would never pay 17,000 U.S for a handgun. 17,000 U.S is a lot of money here. A legal gringo might, however that is a stretch.

Plenty of Dominicans here that have a lot more money than Gringos that will pay the price for protection.................

Many Dominicans see a gun like a "D... Extension" therefor Priceless !
You can even finance them like a Car.
And for every wealthy Gringo, there a a thousand filthy rich Dominicans (at least in SD).
It's not the high price that keeps them from buying a Gun, it's the Headache of the Procedure and also
a lot of them have some "priors" that keeps them from getting one.

I've always been under the impression only military can have a .45. The rest of us have to settle on 9mm

Not everything revolves around Sosua. Some buy guns as a "status symbol" not just for protection.

I am well aware. The poster is from Sosua I am guessing. Few if any are paying 17 thousand U.S dollars for a pistol. A gun as a "status symbol" how juvenile.

I do not know about 17k for a gun, but I do know some people who think that their "guns" give them some type of "status". Agree, juvenile thinking and probably the type of person who should not have a gun.

To me, anything that is considered a status symbol is juvenile. Yes, some things are a better quality than others, but when it becomes a "look at me" item, it's silly to me

I live and work in the greater S.D area. I visit Sosua, not so much anymore. I would visit Sosua more often however there are few palatable restaurants left. Boca is not for me
