I always liked Alberto, but our interactions were always social, not financial.
I don't do "Financial" in the DR, much safer!

How about the drop dead Chicas that appear shy, innocent...(HA!)..nice, "No problemo"....Si mi amor, and all that crap. Already negotiated a price. Everything's perfect! Wow I hit the jackpot! It's good to be me. bla bla bla. Then when you get to the room. She turns into a full blown, CPA with time Manangement skills that would make a Toyota plant manager blush!! This DOES NOT happen anymore.

But it did..(a few times) during my early years in the DR...

Probably more of a deception, but I would put that in the scam catagory....(subtle...but effective) Might be the most common.

So for all you NEWBIES out there, WATCH OUT!!!!!!!!!

Que!?!?

I saw this scam prob a dozen times before I caught on, and I got burned on it once without figuring out. Some street seller comes by with a bunch of teddy bears or other product and comes to a bar with a tourist and his "date." The guy's date says "Hey, it's my son's birthday tomorrow! Can you buy him a Teddy Bear for me?" Of course the guy buys it for her for anywhere from 500 to 1000 pesos, depending on how drunk or horny he is.

The last time I saw this, I asked the bartender how much she gets when she sells the teddy bear back to the vendor the next day. She laughed and said "Estas tan listo..." Then quietly, she said "Medio para ambos.."

There is a deportee working out of Santo Domingo, he started this call centre up from his home with his girlfriend and grew it into what is now a decent sized outfit, operating out a quite an exclusive venue now, he employs 90% other deportees and they are scamming time share holders. They offer an incredible deal of renting out their time share period at a massive rate (they have people wanting to stay at their particular place) and they offer them the option to stay at any of the other properties owned by the same Company/Hotel Chain/whatever. People fall for the ability to beable to pick and choose where they want to go, and for the first years rent they hand over that would be paid on their existing arrangement they have this for life. Contracts are sent, people actually sign them without checking them out, scan them back, send over bank details and payment authorization and an e-package is sent out via email. People look forward to having somewhere else to pick from year after year, and even the inquiry line is an office number back to them so they can keep people on hold and content something is happening as long as possible. It is a good one (if that is the correct term for scammers and one that they are developing all the time apparently, they aren't short of a penny or two). If you own timeshare, you've been scammed once, isn't that enough?

New here and found this site when I googled info about "progressive roulette". A little background why.....I was in Puerto Plata in 2001 with some friends when we were "invited" to play this game. Long story short, we got scammed. Now, bear with me, I've seen multiple threads regarding this game "closed" for whatever reasons, but in fairness, when I say "scammed", i'm not saying there is ZERO chance in ever winning this game, at least not the way it was explained back then to us? The odds were astronomical, but there was a possibility. Anyway, unlike the guy who lost 43K that I read about, me and my buddies only lost around $1200usd? We were extremely mad at the time, but I have to admit, I've since told the story about how it went down countless times and I think it's brilliant (the scam). The guy we were dealing with was absolutely professional. He saw three drunk dudes come in the casino and had us read in an instant. I think he knew exactly how much he could get from us and wasn't about to try to retire off these three drunk beach bums. Instead, he took a nice $1200 payday and off he went on his merry way, closing down the progressive roulette table the minute we were finished! Lol. Anyway, it's a long story and I don't know if the game has changed, but from what I recall, there was a possibility to win, albeit ridiculously long odds and crazy amounts of money would be needed! To give you an idea, Bill Gates might be able to win!

I'm kind of surprised to hear that this game is still being played in casinos in the DR as I thought word would have spread by now, but apparently there's more suckers like me out there! Might be going back in a few months and will be keen to see if they try to reel me in. If they do, I will be sure to take their free spin and then bust them immediately on their "suspect" counting. I will then walk away.

I highly recommend steering clear of this game if you are ever invited to play!!!

Wish your advice came a few years earlier...I got destroyed at this game.....Too embarrassed to say how much I lost.....The guy running it was an older American guy who I am sure is very rich, but appears harmless...Enhances the "scam".

The American guy moves from casino to casino around the country. He hammered my daughter and son-in-law at the Hamaca casino about 5 years ago.

gee, AE, i'm not sure i would have admitted that on a public forum. unless there is a clip on redtube ;)

LOL dorota, you don't miss a trick. Okay, I'll re-phrase. He robbed my daughter and son-in-law at the Hamaca casino about 5 years ago. Almost $5,000 on their credit card. Then tried to charge more to it 3 days after they went home.

Well, it means a lot of things in the crazy English language, one of them is being beaten [literally or figuratively]. Also can mean getting very drunk. Among other definitions :)

santiagodude.....I too wish i'd read about this scam before going! Luckily for me and my buddies, it was "only" 1200USD (about $400 each), which to us at the time, was a lot of money!!!
I wonder if it's the same guy? Wish I had a pic of him. American, at the time (2001) prob late 40's, tanned beyond belief to the point he looked like leather, and if i'm not mistaken, his name, or so he told us, was David. Wouldn't doubt it's the same guy.

Thing is with the game, at least back then, it WAS possible to win. The way the scam went in our case was very similar though, in that he, along with his well endowed, cleavage baring, good looking sidekick (she looked Dominican, not American) miscounted intentionally to allow you to think getting these certain high point rolls, was easy. She was basically there to be a distraction, and i'm not gonna lie, it worked! She played her part to perfection! Don't even think she spoke English, and at the time, I didn't care! lol.

From what I recall, it was 8 balls that you rolled into a somewhat deep cylindrical bowl-like thing. In the bowl, were holes that the balls would come to rest in, all with numbers from 1-6. SO, the lowest you could roll would be 8, and the highest 48. Obviously the high point rolls were in the low/mid 40's and lows like 8-14 or something like that? The difference from what I have read from some, is we didn't even realize he was miscounting. We'd been drinking all day at the pool, were staring at a nice looking girl with a sweet "rack", and the thought never crossed our minds that they'd cheat in what seemed like our favour!!! My first 2 rolls were "allegedly" 44's. Now, I challenge anyone reading this, to grab 8 dice, and roll a 44. GOOD LUCK! Trust me when I say, don't waste your time. Anyway, we needed 100 points and he basically gifted us up to 90 when suddenly the rolls dried up and we began to realize he was adding it incorrectly. We discussed for a few mins what we wanted to do, after realizing we'd been scammed and decided to go for one more roll. At the time, we were up to $250 to roll once more and had we won, our prize was up to $30K or something like that? Anyway, we thought we'd give it a go just thinking how sweet it'd be if we legitimately hit it and won. Of course, looking back, we're not sure we'd have been paid anyway. Obviously we left shortly thereafter.

We told some dudes we met down there about it the next day at the pool and we set them up to go in and see if they could get invited to play. The plan was, for them to bust the dude's miscounting while he was doing it. You see, the second the guy did his speedy count and announced the "44", the "eye candy" chick would swoop in with her hand and grab all 8 balls out of the bowl so no one could check the math. These guys were gonna stop her so they could do the math and when the "44" was actually "26", they, along with us who were gonna be watching from a distance, were gonna swoop in and cause a scene. Prob a good thing it never happened, as who knows what would have happened to us? As they were going into the casino, they saw David (we pointed him out) and yelled out to him that they wanted to play his game. Dude ran to his car and 2 armed security guards came at the boys! We went in shortly thereafter and complained to the manager. Funny thing is, i'd asked "David" if anyone had won recently while we played the night before. He claimed some guy won $75K the week prior, yet the manager said the last big win was $50 a month ago! Lol, I said to him "you're the f'ing manager here and you're telling me that you wouldn't have heard about the winner David told us about"? He claimed he was off, not working that week. Lol, like he wouldn't have learned about it upon his return? Brutal.

Lastly, and this is the best part, I was so curious about this when I got home, I downloaded a "dice simulator" that allowed you to put in 8 dice and roll ten rolls at a time. I sat for about an hour clicking "roll" before I got a 44. I think it was something like 1200 rolls? And "David" claimed I nailed 44 in back to back rolls? Lol.

Like I said, i'm prob not as bitter as some cuz it wasn't a ton of money we lost, but looking back, it's a good laugh and I have to admit, a brilliant scam of a game. I still maintain, if I was some sort of multi millionaire / billionaire and they didn't know it, it's possible to carry on and eventually win. Of course, I still doubt you'd ever see the money! I'd be interested to know if anyone's actually ever won by fluke, and of course, if they got paid? Or if they lived to get paid????
