Let's put this in perspective. Would this Boca Chica scary experience have the same sensationalism of a like visit and exposure in Las Vegas, NV ? There was a lot left out of the Boca Chica report which makes it especially vague and obtuse. It tugs at emotion rather then intellect. PJT suspects the Boca Chica report was conceived more as a cover to support the tellers visit to enjoy paradise at employer's expense.

ABC would have better served its media audience with an expos? of lax police authority over enforcing the law which allows prostitution and frowns upon pimping. The pimps and other assorted scoundrels are allowed to cruise the beach sands and accost visitors under the (intentionally ?) blind eyes of police

However, don't expect a change in media culture. The media culture is to use bells, whistles, and hype to get more viewers and higher ratings which translates into higher advertising tariffs and profit. To hell with real investigative reporting !

It is the media that has become scary.

Regards,

PJT

I do not know what country you are from and do not know how the media finds it's stories, but in the USA it is the PUBLIC that gives the fuel for the media to go out and investigate.

Do you think ABC was just sitting around bored and decided to due a report from Boca Chica??? A customer informed ABC on what went on down in DR and felt they were MISLEAD by the whole thing. We all know about Boca Chica but majority of the world does not and ALL of Americans are clueless to want goes on in Boca Chica.

If a ABC saved one family or couple from going to Don Juan in Boca Chica then they have fulfilled their obligation to the American public, they have showed the other side of Don Juan and Boca Chica something Groupon failed to do.

Why would a typical American care that the police in Boca Chica is not doing their job??? American tax dollars does not pay for the police presence in Boca Chica or the lack there of.

This report was done to protect the American vacationer thinking about using Don Juan and to expose Groupon for not doing their homework.

BTW From a man that have visited both places Las Vegas and Boca Chica , I will tell you the two should never be in the same sentence. Many people go to Vegas for different reason, food, shopping, shows, sight seeing, parties, water parks, boxing matches etc. Vegas is more then black jack and hookers.

Cornball reporting?
Well, what do you expect? Groupon, Google, etc. info aggregators and ABC et al actually elect presidents in the US of A.

Do you have any idea how much money a person can save using Groupon??? Do you have any idea how many humans use Google every second?????

The cheapest I ever rented a car was for 7 dollars a day can you find a car rental place in DR that will rent you a car for 7 dollars a day???

If a family is not wealthy or just trying to save a few bucks and use Groupon they would think Groupon uses some of the best goods and services. IMO Boca Chica and Don Juan are rock bottom they are plenty of places in DR better then Boca Chica and would never recommend a enemy to vacation in Boca Chica nevertheless a friend or family member.

I DO NOT think you know what Groupon is.

Groupon, Google, ABC News cannot be more different if they tried. Its like saying:

The planet Neptune, 7up soda, football helmet LOL they all have nothing in common.

Sometimes I really wonder!!!!!

You really need to switch to DECAF!

Why no comment about my profession?? I need to switch to decaf you could have came much harder LOL!!

Why are you not making fun of 98% of the posters on this thread that believe everything is all about Dominican Republic?? I am having a good laugh right now.

The report had ZERO to do with Boca Chica but more so with Groupon. She concluded and stated they gave a full refund to the customers. Don Juan Resort did not give one penny in return nothing, but Groupon gave a full refund because their reputation is far more valuable then money. Losing 20 customers was not worth the risk so Groupon refunded the money.

Also I will say how the manager of the hotel said" on their next stay they will receive a discount" how funny was that. Do you see the different mindset of the two nation?? A full refund oppose to a discount if you stay with us again, so you can receive more of the same.

The company I work for Nestle USA has embedded in our brains a customer is far more SUPERIOR then money alone. Many companies have went under and people have lost their career because they never understood fully this concept.

An American expat living in DR thinks: this is how it is just go with the flow, don't worry about things you can't control.

An American vacation thinks: this is totally unacceptable if the resort is not willing to handle the situation then I will complain to Orbitz , Expedia, Hotel.com Groupon etc and 9 times out of ten 10 they are taken care once back in the USA with a refund or credit.

Now I will have that DECAF but not a Don Juan have you seen some of their sheets that want people to sleep on?????

It may be silly and it may be ridiculous and it may be sensationalism and it may be a hit piece and it may be true and it may be garbage and the ABC reporters may be overly sensitive diva's and and and...

-->BUT<--

It damages the tourist industry in the DR badly nonetheless. Much of the efforts of MITUR go up in smoke with one "expose" like this ABC piece.

Any business person will tell you the cost to regain a customer lost is 5-20x what it costs to gain a new customer.

( I have to agree on one thing: tourist harassment by beach vendors is one of the most unpleasant aspects of traveling to the DR...)

Typical American consumer mentality.
Pay little, get sh1t.
Get sh1t, scream loud.
Scream loud, get mad.
Get mad, Go to press.
Go to press, sue.
Sue, lose.
Lose, get mad.
And blame it all on the gubmint.

Pathetic! The two men were offered women and went knowingly and willingly - so why were they shocked and horrified when they saw the prostitutes? What did they expect, Snow White doing embroidery? The hair and the stain were disgusting but there was no need for the martyr act about having to sleep on towels with a pillow made out of her own clothes - as everyone knows all she had to do was call and ask for the sheets to be changed.

drstock suspects that PJT is right!

If a guy on a beach suggests that he can take you to meet some girls for a price and you agree to go, why be surprised when you find yourself in a brothel!

Edit: Just saw that Chirimoya beat me to the same conclusion!

Once you master not meeting their eye, while you shake your head no, it gets better. My head goes down to my Kindle as they approach, most don't even bother. Sometimes they'll stand there for a few seconds, waiting for me to acknowledge them, but a shake of the finger, without looking up, works.

I sometimes feel like I'm being rude, but after all these years I get over it.

At the beach where we usually go - Playa Palenque - there were two very old twin sisters who were beggars. I swear, one of them would actually come and sit down at your table, and point to a glass, a plate, whatever. [It was over a decade before we realized there were 2 of them, they're identical]. Last trip I heard one of them died. It made me kind of sad actually.

I completely ignore them. But there is an uncomfortable, pregnant pause until they get the hint or try to get me attention again ("Psssssst...mah fren...for you")...at which point I put on my "angry crazy" gringo face and do a serious finger wagging...

It annoyed me a little that they did not try to talk to the hotel about their problems before they checked out. Would have been interesting to see how the hotel is doing with complaint management. They were desperately trying to show the bad stuff only.

If someone wants to sit peacefully by a nice beach undisturbed, this is easily done in Juan Dolio. I am pretty sure that there are really nice places for $150 a night there, or cheap enough so you can get room and 3 meals for $150 or less. I fail to understand what the advantage is of an All Inclusive hotel. The beaches in the DR are all public, at least legally.

Of course, I speak Spanish fluently, I am not afraid of Dominicans, be they black or White, and am not scandalized by knowing that prostitutes might be lurking in local bars.

The report was for AMERICANS with zero ties to the Dominican Republic or Boca Chica, not for a bunch of people who love everything Dominican.
Lastly the USA is a consumer based economy if a company is not fulfilling their obligations by providing the best service possible then they are removed and another company will gain new customers.

No,
We're just making fun of american"News Reporting" and the absence of real journalism.
The purpose is to sell advertising, the entertainment news are NOT entertaining.:(

I find it hilarious that the two guys who were taken to the bar to look at chicas thought they were truly in the belly of the beast just because the place was dark.

The other thing is, aren't the DR police cracking down on pimping? It seemed like there was nothing but pimps on the beach. Or do they not qualify because they call themselves "buscones"?

I find the reporters for this story far scarier than the locals shown in Boca Chica. The reporters struck me as sheltered, privileged, and the type where everything they say during a conversation sounds like a question.

So glad I'm living in DR and don't encounter those types on a daily basis. I used to hear them on the train in NYC, especially on the 1 train near Columbia University. So grating.
