I am getting (Very cheap) my nephew in Santiago (suburbs by the airport) a 2000 Suzuki Vitara car. Car will be used very locally. I will occasionally use that car when visiting, also for very local shopping. I will also pay for or at least subsidize the insurance as well. Can you get Seguro del conductor insurance on an old car without having to pay for collision and theft? Any advice is appreciated. The knowledge on this board is usually better than asking locals. I have heard too many nightmare stories of people having issues after getting into an accident that was not even their fault. Also, regarding an ongoing topic, is driving on a USA license covered by insurance after 30, 60, 90 days? Does prepaying your tourist visa for additional time legalize you? Thank you in advance.

No problem getting liability insurance without collision and theft. Many insurance companies exclude coverage after your legally permitted time in the country expires.

"Seguro del conductor" insurance in addition to liability is what I want. Since I will not be the owner, I want to make sure it extends to me as the occasional driver. The insurance where your detainment is in a hotel I believe is called "Seguro del conductor."

I believe it's called "casa de conductor". Why not ask an insurance agent who should know all the answers for sure?
WHen you buy the cheapest ins (Ley) you get the minimum for you the driver 15,000 peso and it pays up tp 300,000 peso for the other people and up to 300,000 for a lawyer for you.

You can buy more liability 1 million 2million etc up to 10 million peso for the other person car and or hospital and or death when you hit someone .

If you want better lawyer protection Fianza judicial is when you pay extra more or less 1500 peso for 1 million in lawyers fees . You can get 5 million in lawyers fees if you want.

Casa de conductor is only for towing.
PM me if you want more info as we sell ins and live near Luperon . TO do an exact quote all we need is a copy of the matricula . Norm

Yes you can, but make sure to include casa del conductor on it.

I think they automatically lower the coverage on older cars.....
There is some clause relating to that --

I have a 2005 affected by it.... local use only so I reduced the coverage - a lot !

I would like to take the time to mention a Real Gem of a Lawyer here in Santiago. His name is Felix Garcia he speaks perfect English and his staff are very efficient, he is fair and upfront about costs. For instance, I have asked him to do a variety of Powers of Attorney for Edenorte/CORASAAN/Altice /Blandino etc. I got my car insurance from him with the most important Casa de Conducir for less that I was paying Banca de Reservas directly. Felix squeezed double the amount that the Insurance was willing to pay after a Lady ran into the back of my car. Currently he is trying to get a True Copy of my home deed and he is trying to make the Bank that sold me the home pay for it saying that while they registered the deed, they didn’t give me a copy ten years ago. He explains the options very clearly. Sorry for the delay in posting but I wanted to make sure that he was for real. You contact him at GASA Consultores 809-724-4838.. I put this in the Legal section.

Yes, casa del conductor, is what I want. Not towing service. I wanted to ask here before contacting a broker. My assumption is, they all lie. I was told just today that if the car is in someone else's name, the "casa del conductor" would not cover me, is this true? It's the Dominican republic, you always get three stories, so I ask here.

Casa de conductor is only for towing.". I don't think that this statement is correct. I am sure that the Casa de Conducir allows one to go there make a police report and if necessary as in some one is seriously injured allows for your detention in a motel like on site premises with meals, cable/wifi/a/c visitors keep your phone etc. I have used to three times over the last 20 years to make a My Version"" police traffic accident report on but never had to stay. I am not sure of the meal part nowadays. Sorry Norm.

My understanding of "Casa de conductor" is that, if you are arrested for a violation in your car, instead of going to jail, you pass your time waiting through the process in your own home. But you can't get this coverage with a basic liability policy.

Yes when I was hit by a guy that slide across the centerline and smoked me I had to go to Santo Domingo Casa de Conductor because that is where the other guy , who was fronm SD reported the accident. Luckily his version was more or less the same as mine. Photos, insurance papers...etc. No jail, no hotel, no meals, simply paperwork and an interview.

Speaking of insurance I just bought a new Subaru Forrester, and the insurance quotes were all over the place. I ended up going with La Colonial with Full coverage including 100 percent Comprehensive for 47,750 for 12 months.
