I asked Atty Garcia who said that any duly licensed driver who who is legally in the country is covered by a vehicles Casa de Conductors insurance.

But even with "good insurance" what is your answer? and can you confirm this!
Sorry I don't quite understand your question. I was suggesting that say if you got a insurance liability of several million you would be protected and wouldn't have to sell your house to pay for a claim against you.

Casa del Conductor, does the coverage go to anybody driving the car or does each driver have to be named and insured individually? Thanks!

I am sure that this question has been answered. = I asked Atty Garcia who said that any duly licensed driver who who is legally in the country is covered by a vehicles Casa de Conductors insurance.

I seem to remember my broker telling me that a few years back as well. Just like the tow service - if you break down they ask for your policy number, nothing about the driver.

I checked with my broker again and he said some insurance policies(depending on the company) include Casa del Conductor - others don't. You have to pay extra to add it to your policy - $1675 pesos a year. It covers whomever is the driver of the vehicle. It is only good for accidents that occur in Santiago and Santo Domingo. That's the only places the facilities are available.

I have Monumental car insurance. It is not included in my policy. I pay around 6000 pesos/yr for $RD 4 million in liability insurance.

I wrote to my broker about the coverage, and he said:

"Buenas tardes James,

La persona que esté conduciendo el vehiculo al momento del incidente es a quien le corresponde hacer el reporte."

So based on that, I'd say the coverage extends to whoever is driving the vehicle.

Makes sense..

Looking at the big picture, it doesn't cost them any more to cover whoever is driving the car. They've already gotten their money upfront and all they supply is a building for the insurance agents and AMET officers to do their job. (Unless a person is occupying a room, and then the cost is minimal.)

That is great news, now what is meant by "legally" in the country? And duly licensed? A USA license? 30, 60, 90 days?

DGM consideres you legally in the country for up to 120 days if you requested the extension. A valid drivers license is essential.

Thank you everyone. Now I will have to find the thread on requesting that extension. I assume if you don't request the extension and stay past 30 days you will be considered illegal to drive.
