Yes I was right. I just talked to him and he did choose CMA and got me the basic liability coverage with Casa de Conductor. As I said apparently there are more than CMA who offer Casa de Conductor so I guess it depends on who you choose as to where you stay.

Casa de Conductor it is also called and it does not have to be a hotel, it can be your home
Just to confuse every one:

The "Casa de Conductor" on Ave. Bolivar is a private run business owned by Universal and is supposedly now only for persons with Seguros Universal.

The other one is also a private business and is called "Centro del Automovilista" http://www.centrodelautomovilista.com/ located on Ave. Kennedy in front of Sambil and deals with all of the other insurance companies. They also have an office in Santiago at Calle A, No 1, Reparto Tavares Oeste.

I won't get into the details of why there are two, but you need to check which one you have on your insurance card. Either one is purchased as a separate option when you buy insurance.

Also, when you buy your insurance, you can also purchase the towing option.

I have been buying the extra coverage "Seguro de Ley" for the last 5 years, and I also purchase the towing.

Both options are dirt cheap.

Yes, casa del conductor, is what I want. Not towing service. I wanted to ask here before contacting a broker. My assumption is, they all lie. I was told just today that if the car is in someone else's name, the "casa del conductor" would not cover me, is this true? It's the Dominican republic, you always get three stories, so I ask here.
I'm in a similar situation. I'm driving a car that is not in my name, but I'm paying for the insurance(liability only) which is also in my name. I called my insurance broker to check if I had this coverage(casa del conductor). He told that, while I could add it if I wanted to, the service is only available in Santiago and Santo Domingo and it wouldn't be worth it for me since I live in Cabarete. These two places are special "hotel" accommodations only in Santiago and Santo Domingo.

While the hotel accommodations are nice, the only reason I have casa de conductor is because the AMET agents and the insurance reps are all in the same office.
So it's one-stop shopping if you have an accident. No running around town to fill out forms.
It's also my driver's first defense when some idiot causes an accident with then wants me to pay for the damages.
My drivers just tell the guilty party to meet them at casa de conductor and leave. They never show up.

Casa de conductor is only for towing.". I don't think that this statement is correct. I am sure that the Casa de Conducir allows one to go there make a police report and if necessary as in some one is seriously injured allows for your detention in a motel like on site premises with meals, cable/wifi/a/c visitors keep your phone etc. I have used to three times over the last 20 years to make a My Version"" police traffic accident report on but never had to stay. I am not sure of the meal part nowadays. Sorry Norm.
I am sorry. WIth Humano Casa del Conductor is actually for lawyers fees which they also call Fianza judicial in their terminology

My broker's name is Elezar. Not sure of the name of the company(?). He used to have an office in the plaza behind Baileys where the computer repair guy is. Just moved to the plaza where BM Cargo is. Been with him for over 10 years.

So the car is not in your name but the insurance is? I was told that the "casa del conductor" insurance only covers the person named on the policy, that if I wanted that coverage, for when I drive the car, it would be a separate policy.

That insurance seems PRICELESS, as are your contributions to DR1. Where you told "casa del conductor" was only valid in Santo Domingo and Santiago? Also, does the coverage go to anybody driving the car or does each driver have to be named and insured individually? Thanks!

My broker didn't say it was only valid in Santiago and SD, just that the only facilities were there and it wouldn't be worth it to me living in Cabarete. If one is frequently driving in those cities, or live nearby, it might be worth considering. I'm not sure if someone other than the insured can be added on for this coverage(?). It's possible that it could cover whomever is the driver of the car.

Maybe call La Casa del Conductor directly and get the answer from them(?).
If anyone does get reliable info on this I would like to known, but I would suspect calling that the answer would be yes to all inquiries without written documentation typically dominican "no problema".

For many years when I first lived here I only had the insurance de Ley or minimum. I did not know you could get insurance for greater liability and lawyers fees. For gringos with assets I think it is important to get these. One person I know lost their house after an accident, and another paid a ton in lawyers fees to resolve n accident .

Another great reason to have your home and vehicles in the name of a corporation.

I was told the exact same thing yesterday when I inquired about it when I went to get car insurance here in Sosua.
