What a shame about all the trees cut and destroied to accommodate this monstrosity...! 😳

And I can imagine more will be cut to build more stuff in this unique eco system on the Sosúa beach. The beauty of those shacks, as they call it, was that, they co-existed with all those beautiful trees, that was the unique thing about this beach.

If it was up to me I would order the rebuilding of those shack in proper modern but small similar style, more organised but carefully done so not a single tree would be cut, and let people keep enjoying it for a few more decades....!

Good word for it. That's what it looks like to me, also - a monstrosity.

More will have to be cut down for the three high-rise condo towers.

Unfortunately, it's part private property and part set-back zone where construction is not permitted, so that wasn't an option.

Don't see them allowing any of those big beautiful trees to obstruct their ocean view once the plazas are complete. Sad.

I used to live two blocks from all of that construction on the Charamicos side. Hard to believe how different it looks now.
Sad.

No doubt hiring a landscape architect to assist with the planning was out of the question.

The plaza area on the El Batey side looks much more small and they are still in the groundworks phase ??!!
Wouldn't that side technically be busier due to being closer to the touristy side ?

Unless they plan on having all the buses/cruise tour vans stop at the Charamicos end.

I think it was Danny, the owner of the erstwhile Malibu's who said in a video that he liked Sosua out of all the beaches he had been too (before he moved to Thailand, of course)

Go
I never noticed any active work in that smaller area on the El Batey side when I went for walks. At least the other end had made some 'progress'.

The bigger area looks closer to the beach but that side of the beach the water comes quite close the raised area during high tide where the shacks used to be.

IMHO, the best places for the plazas would have been in the middle equidistant between each other and the two ends i.e. divide the beach into thirds, so that the bars/restaurants could have served the whole beach easily

Go lie on that side of the beach for a while. The construction noise is very annoying.

I was blown away by what I saw on my first trip up to Sosua during the Spring 2012. As far as actual beaches for swimming and relaxing are concerned, It was by far my favorite beach out all the beaches I've been too throughout South East Asia and the Caribbean. Now it's being completely gutted. A real shame in my opinion.

Same as when they cut down all the trees on Pedro Clisante. We lost our shade and temperature rose 20 degrees.

I remember when they did that and they did it with very little or no warning at all. A good friend of mine lives a block off PC, they took his trees down, his apartment has been like a oven ever since.

Same as when they started redoing the sidewalks on PC in front of my restaurant. No warning and they started mid-November just as high season was beginning. It took them till mid-February to finish. No planning or consideration.

It was a one of a kind place to hang. I loved the beach. I've been to Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Costa Rica...this was the best beach I have found to spend the day at. They could have improved what they had and it would have been a wonderful draw.
It's very sad that they want this beach like the others. They know not what they had.

The Problem is the Dominican Business Mindset .. they think "Modern" is an Improvement and puts them closer to a First World experience.
When in Fact it was Charming because of the way it was , with Shacks and personal Service and Shade trees., and every spot had its own unique Personality . So one could have a lot of Fun finding what Suited your Style, taste and the type of People hanging out at your favorite Spot .
The new Plaza will be much closer to literally a REST STOP on a Thruway . Sure it will be a melting Pot of people, but it will be STERILE as many have said already.
People do not get on a Plane to go hang out at a Highway rest Stop , just because its next to a Beach.
The Dominicans do not and will not ever understand this simple Concept . Money is their only motivator, and the Cruise Ship people just dont know any better to even care so they will take their $$ over ours any day ..
We can reminisce all day long, but it wont change what is Coming .

Spot on. Could have said it better. They had something and did not see it.

There are a large segment in the tourist area that craves this "Modern". Problem is, that is what happens everywhere else. I remember Negril in the 70s. It was hedonistic...now it is "modern". An eyesore. Same thing happening to Sosua.

Didn't see any bull dozers however I did see a ton of trash and debris where some of those shacks once stood that had yet to be collected, which if not properly disposed of will eventually just wash out into Sosua Bay.

I'm curious.
How do they plan to prevent landsides in the future now that most of the trees on the Charamicos side have been removed?
I'm starting to wonder if in time the plazas will slide down into the beach now that they undermined that section by removing the trees.

I hope not, because that would hit the two streets on the Charamicos end (the one that goes to Michael's Stone bar and the one with the corner colmado). Given the 'quality' of construction, it might happen though.

The genius of Dominican engineering. They excavated the hill across from the Charamicos Plaza and took the excavation all the way to the edge of the road going up into Los Cerros undermining a storm pipe which collapsed and now the Los Cerros road is breaking apart and will soon be gone.
And that's why there is a mountain of mud spilling across the road everytime it rains.
And despite being warned of the consequences of what they were doing in time to stop it, the clueless constructors continued on.
Now they will hide and deny responsibility for repair leaving hundreds in Los Cerros without an access road and thousands of cars and motos sloshing through 8" deep mud cakes onto the only road into Sosua.

The stupidy of brains in DR knows no bottom.

Recently a Dominican entrepreneur showed me the size of a typical Dominican brain with his fingers: like a peanut.

Having dealt with dozens of workers and repair jobs of previous jobs last 2 weeks I have to agree. The ability to make things worse is the only thing that stands out.

Sorry if it's a bit off-topic, although it may relate to what is happening on the beach, but what was the reason given for cutting down those trees?

I think it was a plan to revitalize that area. Ill conceived and poorly executed.
