The cruisers that do get out, those who think what a swell place to buy a condo, now those are the ones that trouble me.
Overdevelopment here in the land of poor infrastrucure ...... Let them cruise, visit and go back home...
I doubt there will be a lot of those.
They have like 2 hours out of port to see something of RD.
But they have that same opportunity a day later or earlier to see another tropical paradise.
Something really special would need to happen during that 2 hours on Sosua beach to make them want to buy a condo.
Heyyy, maybe that is a way for the government to integrate the chapiadoras in their plans?
Mind shattering experience on shore in Sosua.....

I agree with you. Most people that go to Punta Cana never say they went to the DR and most don't leave the resort. However, don't forget that unlike the resorts, cruise ships are not all-inclusive.
Really??
I was convinced cruises were like floating AI resorts with open buffets 24/7!!

Some buffets are included, but a la carte dinners and alcoholic drinks are not included. I think they also charge 20% gratuity on your final bill. Cruising is not cheap and not for the frugal.

People seem to be missing a point here. The cruisers are ALREADY COMING IN SIGNIFICANT NUMBERS !

They have more than 2 hours out of port in most cases. More like 6 to 8.

Yes, they are overwhelming the chicas and the chica chasers, they are filling up the restaurants so the NYPD, and transit union chaps that are Sosua regulars can't get a table. .... get real bro
Take it up with those reporting that the cruisers are already coming in significant numbers and it was part of a long term plan for the north coast.

I went to Sosua beach at least 50 times in the past 12 months and there are busloads of cruisers there every day,you don't know what you are talking about. Thousands of cruisers,no. But enough to make an impact in some local businesses particularly the party/sightseeing boats in Sosua bay. Facts.

Interesting . So a second Confirmation.. of traffic ?

The only thing though, if most of them are going on the "SIGHTSEEING Boats" etc .
I am wondering, are those the NEW Boats in the bay ?
Someone earlier mentioned that there seem to be a LOT more Boats in the Sosua Bay recently,, noticeable number .

I'm thinking the Cruise lines have a special relationship with them, and they were brought in from possibly far away ..

From my brief experience Cruising, I was Fascinated by one owner operator I was chatting with ,( i can look up the details of anyone doubts this) on one of the other Islands .. This guy. A Business literally Came from EUROPE with his Boat to work the Cruise business, he had a special Contract with them.. Pretty much was an Employee of the Cruise Lines, but an owner Operator .
I wonder if the Cruise Lines brouht in their Own people for this as well.
Which would mean the Locals are still getting Cheated ...
Someone mentioned the DIVING Operatorshave seen an uptick .. but our Resident Dive shop owner has not really chimed in if he is seeing an UPTICK in his business, So I wonder if t hose kind of Dive Boats were also brought in from far away .

This unfortunately is the REALITY of the Greed of these Cruise Lines.. they dont like to share their Pieces of the Pie .

jd426. Cruise ships are set up to partner with other businesses to capture every dollar possible.
Most likely any events the cruisers got to are set up with partners of the cruise lines for that reason.
Perhaps the new boats are one of those partners. That is simply their business model. Some considerng it cheating
while others recognize it as smart business.

At least we are beyond the point of arguing that cruisers won't go to Sosua Beach...

Carnival keeps on average 55% from the excursion business and have extremely strict rules the business must comply with. Seapro was the dive company that Carnival had teamed up with at the beginning and quickly dropped them over some issue that arose with a tourist.

I actually remember that day with the issue. We were at the same dive site

Yesterday (Friday Jan 3, 2025) I walked Sosua Beach to Charamicos and back, between 3 and 4pm.

What I saw was (at least) 30% of the “Bars” with no one... just bored employees staring at their phones.
Half of the “Bars” had one to four guests.

The Government has done their best to make it look like... bombed out ruins.

Two months of Heavy Rain washing away vast amounts of Sand.
Look at the base of the trees and palms. . . the sand used to be a foot (or more) higher.
Both entrances are stripped of sand.
Uncontrolled heavy run off has washed thousands of cubic feet of Sand, in a channel, back into the Ocean.

I've been coming to Sosua Beach for 15 years!

DR infighting and absolute neglect have ruin this Beach.

This is high season. I remember years back, you could have trouble finding a place to sit at some bars at this time of year.

Those days are finished.
Sosua will go down in history as another example of "it was tolerated until it was abused" guest who thought they owned the place along with a few local dirtbags claiming to have "connections" ruined it for the rest of us.

Punta Cana took the toursim business pure and simple. People still don't understand this. Most flights disappeared from POP airport and most went to Punta Cana.

I have observed the changes over the past 21 years and it has NOTHING to do with recently changing Sosua beach and getting rid of the squalid shacks there.
All of the north coast is way down for years regarding tourism and is growing with respect to expats.

Where are the bus loads of cruiseship patrons? Surely they will save Sosua buying umbrella drinks and renting snorkel masks.

The downturn in toursm didn't start when they recently knocked down a few shacks on Sosua beach. All of the north coast is way down for years regarding tourism and is growing with respect to expats.
Sir Windy, again with the confusion or should I say disinformation. I thought you were cosigning the info about the arrival of bus loads of cruiseship patrons? The chicas are still all over the town still. Why is that?

I guess you are not actually reading the posts about cruisers in this thread.
Well Sir windy, you co-signed on a statement when a gentleman said 'bus loads every day". It simply is not the case.
