Again, they might be building a hotel, but then whats the family going to do in Sosua, go to a Pica pollo or Tienda China?

la Union? That's not even a factor. Although there is one good chicken place out front on that parallel access road.
You're going to see a lot more development around Playa Dorada/Airport area in the next few years. The land is already being scooped up.

Interesting, seeing as there has been a constant migration to Punta Cana, can't see why someone thinks they can reinvent Playa Dorada? So who, in their infinite wisdom, believes that's a good place to start throwing money at?

No reinvention needed, just some upgrading and people with cash willing to speculate. It's people with a lot more cash then me. Take a drive thru PD, but make sure you go down the side streets. That's where the action is. 7 story and 5 story condo developments, and they're selling.

They have had some big condo developments in Cabarete in the last few years, and some people have bought them. Not many staying there though.

They buy for different reasons.
I think the Chinese are more long term investors.

Sosua retirement community?? Old people hate steps and narrow hallways, cracks in sidewalks, loud noise, no access to decent med care. I guess if they leveled the entire city center and started from scratch. Narrow wet concrete steps is dangerous for the young and the entire town has them. Sosua is going to be a hoe town for some time to come.
Sosua is geographically large. The visible whore monger situation will either be dealt with or not.
It isn't the presence of the "business" it is the visibility of it that is at issue.
Also, Cabarete is actually "under" Sosua with respect to the legal definitions of the territory.
So yes, there are a number of retired here. Me being one of them since 2003. Casa Linda, El Choco, Sea Horse Ranch, Sosua Ocean Village, Encuentro, Costa Azul, Ocean Dream, Ocean One, Harmony, ProCab and more. Houses being built. More retirees coming. It is true. Vastly larger than whoremonger street in one small part of Sosua.

Most of the Sosua tourist infrastructure is showing its age. Some have had a lick of paint but it’s too little too late. They can’t compete with Playa Dorada, Cofresi, Cabarete, etc. for family style resorts. Pedro Clisante is tired and run down. Would you want to take your wife and kids to eat at some of the bars and restaurants there? They are hangouts for expats, men there for the sex trade, and the street people that come with that. There are pricy high end private condos for rent but most families prefer AI resorts with hassle free beaches adjacent to them. Beaches free of people selling stuff.
Makes one wonder why Marriott would buy and renovate the Ganesvoort resort in Sosua, doesn't it?

It's hard for me to understand why anyone would want to retire there with that reputation. I'm assuming for the most part it's a husband and wife retiring. That would be the last place I would go to retire and I'm single.

It's a shame, lot's of nice places to eat in Sosua. I can never bring my kids, though, so I don't go.

Unlikely to happen despite the strength of "the church" here. The vast amount of prostitution happens discretely and does not involve flights from NY on JB.
It is the sideshow of Sosua they want to stifle. "They" have just not figured out how.

Exactly. If they do start harassing the johns though, it might make an impact. They'll be a few arrests, they'll be a few scuffles, and the word will spread quick on the interweb.
And if they ever implement "stop and frisk", it'll end much quicker. They'll need to have a weekly bonfire behind the police station to get rid of all the blunts. (is that what the kids are calling them these days?)

"Figuring out how" is not the strong suit of most politcos, local or national. The how in Sousa is obvious and has been discussed numerous times on this site in other threads. There is no sustained political will to tackle any issue that cannot be addressed by a single decree. There is no interest in following up to ensure that new measures are enacted, completed and enforced for longer than a short period of time.
For a small town that cannot set out 20 public garbage cans downtown and empty them everyday and cannot maintain sidewalks in the main tourist area, there is clearly no hope and no real interest to do anything at all - the politicos never seem to finish stuffing their pockets with pesos though.
Sosua talks about change to appease Santo Domingo but is not prepared to do anything of substance to foster that change. I have seen nothing done in the last 4 years that would suggest the Mayor and her entourage are anything other than an incompetent syndico of greedy paper tigers.
