Olga has now changed into a tropical storm instead of this sub-tropical stuff that none of us know how to deal with :cheeky: Maximum winds are closer around the center and the good news is that weakening of the storm is happening. Noaa says that even large and powerful hurricanes cannot maintain strength after interaction with Hispaniola's high terrain.

Rainfall predictions remain unchanged. The center is now about 55 miles Northwest of Santo Domingo. Wind strength estimates remain unchanged at maximum 60 miles per hour and still moving Westwards at around 14 or 15 miles per hour.

The primary threat remains flooding .. we're already wet from Noel.

I happen to be in the U.S. for a couple of weeks, but can provide a mini Cabarete update as of 11:15pm local DR time.

Cabarete area's internet has been out for a couple of hours now. Not seeing any friends online. Cellular service is working. Just spoke to a friend living in Ocean Dream. That area is fairly well sheltered and he had not seen any damage from his apartment, however said wind was too strong to venture out. He thought that perhaps Marabu's tent was damaged as heard some very loud noises from that direction. Thinks there's likely to be other damage due to blowing debris and to weak structures just based on the sustained high winds.

Sosua 11:15pm local DR time - I can remotely access a server I have in Sosua, so internet is working there at least in some locations.

Here in Cofresi its been blowing about 50mph (with higher gusts) since 9pm, Puerto Plata is a mess with downed trees and signs.

Very strange storm, to gain strength while the center of it was over land, but thats probably because the big part of the storm was over water and fed moisture into the center.

Just talked to another friend in Cabarete. (Cellular's obviously still working for the moment & cable tv was as well). He lives out near the Texaco station in a 'Dominican style' house with an aluminum roof. He's not had a problem with his house so far. I actually woke him up with my call.

He'd spoken with another friend of ours who works in Cabarete who advised that as of 10:30 Casanova, Lax, and Onno's were open & that part of Lax's 'techo' had blown away.

I guess more reliable & detailed updates will come after dawn. If no one's online, I'll make a few phone calls when I wake up & post what I learn.

Unfortunately, those who can least afford to are usually the ones that suffer most in these storms :(

A lot of us are remembering Jeanne ;)

I slept through Jeanne. Well I stayed up until 3am but Jeanne stalled out somewhere near Nagua, so I went to bed. When it eventually came through at 8am I was zonkers. :) So I'm glad I didn't miss at least some of this one, both in real life & on tracking.

Looking at this looks like its going WNW. Centre looks further north than last advisory. Must have wobbled again - if this is due west I need a change of specs. ;)

Well it seems here on Santiago Yaque river its really high, i heard on the channel 25 that they took around 5000 m3 of water out of the Tavera's Damn so far i heard that the water is very high at the level of Bellavista *not confirmed yet. Any reports from someone on that area would be good to know the situation, by the way according to NOAA:

Light steady breeze with light rain continues so far this morning.
Sky shows no sign of let up.
A gray day.

Clearing and it looks like we might have some sun in Las Galeras this morning at 7am. The worst of the weather passed through here between 4 and 7 pm yesterday. Winds blew steady around 30mph and we had several squalls of about 10 to 15 minutes duration when the wind EXCEEDED hurricane force with the heavy rain being driven completely horizontal. I estimate it blew between 75 and 80mph. I haven't been out to survey the local LG area but our property and it's downed vegetation looks just like the aftermath of a hurricane.

FLASH
MAJOR FLOODING IN THE LOWER PART OF SANTIAGO DE LOS CABALLEROS

BARACOA, LA JOYA, LOS HOSPEDAJES FLOODED, AREA AROUND ZONA FRANCA

Apparently so much rain fell in the Tavera watershed that officials (hopefully it was officials) opened the flood gates, releasing as much as 5000 cubic meters of water into the Yaque River. Current reports are saying that 1500 meters are being released at this time (three times more than when Noel passed over).

Serious situation in the lower part of town!!

Stay tuned

For those that know Santiago:
the waters are now covering the baseball stadium below the bridge, flooding all the surrounding area. People are on roofs, in trees, anything that is higher up.

The release of the waters caught everyone unawares. Cars and other vehicles parked below are under water.

Stay tuned

Latest reports say that 3000 meters per second are being released from the Tavera Dam.
This puts everyone in the Yaque River Basin in trouble. Downriver, Casta?uelas, Monte Cristi...Mao are in deep trouble.

Might be worse than Noel for these places.

Santo Domingo got rain, but less than was expected. On and off relatively short rain downpours. At 7:30am there was a lovely spot of a rainbow in the horizon, not shaped as a half circle, just vertical but with all its colors, kinda weird. Anyway, it looks like we will have a drizzle on and off all morning.

School called off

The Ministry of Education yesterday suspended school for Wednesday, 12 December. I suppose this was nationwide as an extra precaution.

Oh heavens! This is serious stuff. I have flashbacks about being caught in a flash flood just outside of a small village some years ago .. when the flood gates were not opened. People will drown ... houses flooded, possessions lost, all the cropland will be flooded. Small villages will be out of reach. And then, while the waters recede, diseases, mosquitos and all of that.
