With more than 11 million travelers expected this year, why wouldn't a local insurance company sell required medical insurance coverage to every traveler for a few weeks and charge 4-5 bucks for it?

Seems to me that would be a gold mine.

Could you include it in the price of the ticket?

Maybe we are onto something. Make that coverage come with a $1,000 dollar deductible so skinned knees or Montezuma's revenge aren't part of hospital services
Make it mandatory as part of the airport check in. Say $8 but valid for only 60 days. That's over $80 million a year.

Not so much rude as it is uninformed. Our system is quite good at emergency care but on the other hand it does struggle with average everyday stuff.

Good to here but this would qualify as a critical emergency no?
I just have seen survival of head injuries in DR don't seem to have a good outcome. I knew or know of 4 people who did not leave the hospitals after head injuries although they recieved treatment

Well dont I want to side track this good thread and I certainly hope this young lad recovers and the loser gets jail time, but any able bodied person that does not have full medical coverage is an idiot

I would love to know what resort and what hospital the kid is in I can guarantee you the hospital will gouge them in the bill

I find an amazing that they could give two craps about this kid's life that want their money first that kind of sums up this country

His mother is updating their GoFund me page regularly. Still in ICU asleep as of yesterday but strong enough to be flown by medical chopper with doctor and nurse today.

Thats great, the mother commented in one of the newspapers (couple of days ago) that they were waiting for a hospital bed to become available in Edmonton.

I saw his mother posted she will never come back to DR - but it was a Canadian that did this to her son.
Maybe it's frustration with the resort, hospital or just her nerves which is understandable

What's even sadder for the family is they are being told they must wait many weeks for a bed to be made available in Canada's failed hospital system.
That's what "free" medicine seems to offer.

Probably frustration, being in another country when something like this happens is not easy. Plus, I am sure we have not heard everything that transpired during all this.

I was wondering the same thing. As of tonight no further updates on GoFund me. Interesting that a large donation came from someone who's friend was assaulted unprovoked by the same suspect in Halifax, Canada many years ago.

Hopefully he makes a full recovery even though it will be a long haul.
I wonder if the perpetrator will be held in DR until the victim is out of danger and his long lasting damages are known.

Last I looked her Go Fund Me didn't have enough to cover the life flight.
The Hoteliers in Punta Cana should all chip in because it is in their best interest that he recovers and nothing fatal occur while under DR medical care
