Anybody buying or putting money into a business on Pedro Clisante at the moment is a fool. I am so glad I sold everything a few years ago. Although I want to start something up again, I will wait until this passes and Neuman is gone for good.

I've always wanted to open a Country Western bar in Sosua (but won't). Put the barmaids in cute little Cow Girl outfits. Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline playing. Sawdust on the floor. Boot Scoot'n Boogie.

I think the NA baby boomers would flock to that.

That’s ok because the family tourists coming here are all super rich and will soon be demanding high class penthouse bars on the multistory residential towers. Sosua is now for the rich... lol ??????

You mean the same Willy that tried to move to redlight district earlier and got bitched slapped by Armando? Sorry this isn’t municipal level action but federal...

Bars close, bars move, bars re-open and replaced, new bars, new owners (with more money and connections), blah blah, 9 years of it and still same old same old....!

Just feel sorry for the workers, and those foreigners who will be subject to more crimes, robberies and muggings for a while - food has to come on the table from somewhere....!?

And expect a lot of jons and chicas on the streets, a bit homeless, pretty nice picture for all family tourists waiting at Sosua entrance to pour in... ! lol

I wonder why these closures seem to most often occur at night? What's wrong with shutting a place down in the afternoon, less drama I would think.

Probably because they want to send a message to the people that are looking for prostitutes. In the 16 years I have been living here I have seen many bars on Pedro Clisante get closed down and this usually only lasts for a few days. Last night was the first time that they did anything on a major scale. They even shut down the power in the area at exactly the same time that the police and fiscal arrived. This was well coordinated by the authorities but as usual, poorly executed. Nobody wants to see SWAT police in masks and machine guns swooping in and closing down the bars like they did last night. It would have been much better doing it by the day but they wanted to send a message not only to the people frequenting the bars but also to the girls on the street. Who knows if this will be the usual few days or something a lot more serious? All bar owners were notified over a year ago that this was coming so it was of no surprise to the owners, but what the authorities should have done is given them a date when the closures were going to happen so that they could make arrangements and even do voluntary closures so that that were not forced by police to close down. All these bars employ so many people that for the mean time are now without jobs and my heart goes out to these people that are trying hard to provide for their families....and of course this happens just before Christmas! Now don't get me wrong, I am actually all for the change in Sosua providing that it was done correctly but at the same time if these types of bars still existed but in another area of town then that could work too. I cannot go out with my wife in children in down town Sosua so I will be happy when that day finally arrives. But unfortunately no alternative locations have been given to these business owners (even though there is supposed to be a designated area down by the High Caribe nightclub) meaning that the already high unemployment level here in Sosua just got higher. If prostitution was entirely eradicated from Sosua then that would not be a bad thing but if it wasn't, and was moved to an area outside of the down town core would that really be a bad thing? Many people reading this that have lived and worked in Sosua have benefited indirectly from the colorful nightlife as there is more money on the streets, foreigners frequent all these bars and restaurants, shops and hotels. These people pay to play so girls have money so they in turn, spend money in salons, clothing shops, supermarkets etc. The same goes for all the employees of these bars and restaurants, they spend money all over town too. So this is not just a question of affecting a few bars downtown, it affects a huge amount of people throughout town and surrounding areas. We all know that many of these girls that are out on the streets have families to provide for and many of them are doing what they are doing to support their family so these closures mean that so many families will suffer. Either way, whatever happens in Sosua, I just wish it was done the right way, if there even is a right way. So many people have their opinions either for or against the clean up of Sosua. I personally am torn between the two as yes, at the very least the down town core should be cleaned up and properly policed so that it does not return to the current state it is in, but I also believe that again, if properly policed in a designated area that a red light district could work here. I know a lot of people will probably respond voicing their opinions but this is the reality of what is going on in Sosua and it will be interesting to hear what people say.

From what I could see in the videos it was not only bars, but restaurants too that were closed. That wasn't part of the plan that I heard.

I have yet to read a list of which businesses were closed. For pub crawl purposes, inquiring minds need to know!

nope, same thing happened about 8 years ago and I am sure it will happen again. did the chicas disappear ? nope

As said before in this thread, this one's different. No, really it is.

The "entitities" that desire this change are frustrated at the time it has taken to make any permanent change. That's why the big spectacle last night. There will be some stragglers, but it's basically over. Their message is clear, do it somewhere else.

I suspect last night was the removal operation of bar/discos that City Hall threatened would happen months ago. Last night was the night it took place (an action that has been considered for years) .

Is that correct?

Were these places were "removed as promised" and will not be allowed to re-open as bars or discos any longer on that small strip of Pedro Clisante?

I just got back from seeing who got closed. I could only go by which businesses had stickers. I counted 6.

Classico, Bourbon, Pratinum, Rumba (whatever it's called now), Chez Montreal, Blue Ice. I didn't see a sticker on Bar Central or on Flames sports bar. I'm sure that Bar Central's sticker got ripped off. I am very surprised that Chez Montreal and the old Rumba got closed down as they both are 100% restaurants. It will be an interesting (and low) high season.

I appreciate your balanced post, and I understand if you like to go with your family downtown during the day, but would you go there say 11pm or 12 or later there with your kids, what for, I think that is what they need to look at and manage properly.

Red Light districts downtown many cities (almost all have it) are usually normal places, even have markets or cafes/restaurants during the day - you don't even recognize them as anything seedy. But at night time they turn into adult playground....

If all those cities can manage it, why can't they do it in here... !?

The bars that were closed were Merengue/Classico- Bourbon Street- Pratinum (previously El Flow)- King Bar (previously Rumba)- Blue Ice- City Lights. Not sure if Son da Bar was closed down too.
Bar Central was not shut down because it is a hotel. Not sure about Flame Bar. Also not sure about The Diamond Lounge as this is in the plaza where Alberto's restaurant is opposite Britannia

..I remember when they told all bar owners on Pedro C they had to be enclosed as the crowd could not be visible from the street. Most of the big operations complied and built windows and partitions. Then they actually closed Pedro C and had tables and chairs on the street to supposedly attract families to hooker central. That lasted 1 or 2 months. I am in S.D for the next few weeks so I will not be able to check out the inevitable action on Pedro C till then

The Pedro Clisante street closure lasted 9 months and not 1-2 months. They reopened the street on January 6th during high season. The street closure was the best thing that had ever happened and because of 30 signatures of protest, the mayor was forced to reopen it.
