This sh!t burns me up. Decide to spend a long weekend in Sosua with the ex and step daughter. Spending good money at the Hispaniola condos on the beach. Now, I checked in with them and had a car. Second day after buzzing thru the gate a security guy chases us down and informs me prostitutes are not allowed on the premises. I am with a 48 year old Dominican/German citizen and her 15 year old daughter. So I guess mixed race couples or families need not buy into Sosuas family friendly campaign. The only way the security dude would back down was when both of them started yelling at him in German followed by a translation in Spanish. And to top it off I didn’t even get any that very long weekend.
So it is Friday and the weekend is upon us. I will be going out to eat in Cabarete, but could those who always say that nothing has changed in Sosua check and see if tonight is like last Friday in Sosua? You know that tiny little part of Sosua everyone always talks about and is in the news recently?
And then do that for the next say, 20 or 30 weeks? Only then will we really know how the changes stick..

That's all in the history book. This is a new deal. A new hand. Ball game. "Trafficking" is a big f ning word that doesn't fly right.
I think its two fold.
1. Locals are fed up with the negative "image" all the idiots have
continued to promote.
2. The real police (NGO's like Oxfam) who issue the report cards,
which the big boys (IMF, IDB, World Bank and UN) use
as part of the carrot and stick lending policies when dealing with
"developing" nations, are not to keen on countries which allow
places like Sosua to flourish as a sex-tourism destination.

I have been saying #2 for years.
The DR is dependant on IMF cheese. The IMF's latest "thing" is "human trafficking." So as a condition for their cheese, a country has to "prove" progress against "human trafficking."
I can only guess - it was unpalatable to the authorities that someone who made a profit off the back of prostitutes, would be allowed to convert a house of ill repute into a disco and carry on as if no harm no foul. It seems to be fairly standard that such businesses get shuttered and need to reopen as something completely different and with new management.
It's not about ME so no need to make it personal - stick to the ideas put forward please.
Happens with some frequency all over the world. A business causes consternation at city hall and poof their business license is revoked or they are subjected to a zoning change. Businesses are not people and do not have rights (or at least they shouldn't). Eg. A hotdog vendor is granted permission to operate a cart in a given location. After six months they figure out they can't sell enough hotdogs to stay in business. They change their model and begin selling soft ice cream cones. The Diary Queen across the street takes exception and within a very short period of time the city tells the vendor with the cart to relocate if they are lucky or just cancels their business license, without which they may not operate at all.
There is evidence of method in their madness here, it's just usually stupid, illogical and based on a reality that others cannot comprehend or easily see.
Not a brothel and under the jurisdiction of a separate administrative government. Technically and it may be difficult to prove otherwise, Blackbirds is a hotel. Onsite is a "mamma-san" who is not employed by Blackbirds who seems to be able to setup dates with ease. Neither the girls nor mamma-san appear pay the hotel for access to the guests or the rooms under the purview of the hotel - on paper at least.
I think we all can see what is really going on at this establishment, but if both parties are careful and do not run-afoul of the 3rd party law, and if the neighbors don't complain, and if the girls don't complain it may be possible to maintain more than 6 degrees of separation between the the girls and mamma-san and the hotel
When I checked in maybe 16 years ago....they handed me a book filled with girls pictures....said I could pick. The place was not really my cup of tea.
If they continue cleaning it up and making real permanent changes,
I may actually consider moving back.
