Any roof will develop occasional leaks which, if corrected, won't be a problem. You simply cannot let a roof leak long term or the integrity of the roof is compromised. Add to the fact that this roof had 6 huge A/C units on it plus three 500 gallon water tanks. There very well could be other buildings in danger of collapse. I think a lot of building owners will be looking at their roofs as a result of this.
100% true. I'm just mentioning that here in general nobody gives a S... about this kind of things. Preventive Maintenance does not exist in this Country.
"Let's wait until it breaks and than we fix it"

That's exactly what Antonio Espaillat said in the interview.

and what' is so special about this behavior !? There must be thousands of Places like this in the DR. G-d loves this country. Otherwise tragedy's like this would actually happen here at least weekly.
And on the way to these places you will pass by trucks with worn tires that should had been changed years ago, entire families on a motorcycle with no one wearing a helmet (and many motorcycles that don’t even have working lights), pass on bridges that just by looking at them you know they aren’t receiving the maintenance they require… The list is long.

Giving proper maintenance to things isn’t a priority to a good chunk of the Dominican population.

Some are not giving any thought to reality when referring to this case when for a good chunk of Dominicans it’s very easy to step on hypocrisy. Some wanting to be harsh on him due to the deaths is one thing (particularly anyone closely related to one or more of the victims), but wanting to be harsh on him due to the maintenance is ironic when the same people doing the pointing don’t think twice about not following the traffic laws (including parking in front of a sign that says No Parking), not paying their electricity bill and scamming gringo with “gringo prices” that everyone knows are BS.

Though wrong, but when it comes to proper maintenance Antonio Espaillat and company was simply being a typical Dominican. Oh wait, he is a Dominican?

I am not him but if I was him I would go low profile in the mountains or something. Sit on a porch in a rocking chair. Do yoga and meditate. Go to church and pray. Maybe therapy. Follow legal counsel. Start liquidating or selling the businesses. Try and reach settlements regarding the different law suits and offer to help victims. It seems to me being in business is over for him and he should be glad he is alive too. Sometimes we just screw up.

That would be expected if he did it on purpose and wasn’t sorry that it happened. In fact, he should had left the DR by now like many others have done when things take a wrong turn. Why hasn’t he?

Start liquidating or selling the businesses.
Right now that’s prohibited by a recent court ruling.

Try and reach settlements regarding the different law suits and offer to help victims.
He says they have been working with several of the victims families including one where a few girls lost their parents, so they are paying for her to continue studying in the same private school.

It seems to me being in business is over for him and he should be glad he is alive too. Sometimes we just screw up.
No. It may seem like that right now. He has actually been promoting the DR more than most Dominicans. Indirectly has done more to increase business and job opportunities to thousands of Dominicans than most have ever done.

He certainly didn't do it on purpose. I don't think he imagined anything like that could happen. It is more like maybe he didn't know what was going on. Busy with other stuff.

I am glad to hear he is working with victims. That will help them and be healing for himself. There is a long healing process for everyone involved.

With plasterboard, I think he's referring in the interview to plates of "plafon" that were installed below the roof.
Correct. Hung ceiling below the cement ceiling. You can see the panels in some of the videos.

I read he's been prohibited from leaving the country.

I disagree.
When something like this happens and you have real skin in the game it's best to tackle it head on.

I wasn't talking about him running away and hiding. Seems Nals understood it like that too. Just follow legal counsel. Now he did the interview so now stay away from the media.

He returned the same day of the disaster, April 8. His sister was trapped in the rubble and called him in Vegas from there.

I don't think I've seen anything about him being not being allowed to leave.

Exactly, the point being that those have nothing to do with the integrity of the structure or would they fix any leak. The water would still penetrate the concrete from above, just not drip over the customers... So as far as I can understand, this comment of his has absolutely nothing to do with this collapse, as those ceiling panels in there are just for cosmetic purposes. If those panels drop, no big harm done but if the ceiling structure itself comes down, happens what happened here.

The water had to filter through the roof and drip on to the panels. Water filtering through the concrete roof would definitely affect the integrity of the roof.

It was in the interview. He immediately caught a flight and was here in the DR the same day. Don't know when the prohibition was placed(?).
Where exactly it says that in the interview?
