The perfect car for the Dominican Republic? What would it be for you?

Dear forum members, please share what car would be ideal for you in the Dominican Republic, regardless of its cost? Which car would you choose for everyday use, and which car would you recommend for short-term rental for trips around the island? What are your thoughts on electric cars? We're especially interested in the opinions of actual owners of such vehicles.

For example, we are currently considering purchasing a Tesla for rental use in Punta Cana, but we have some doubts about whether there will be demand for it. By the way, a couple of days ago, we visited a dealership that sells electric cars (opposite CEPM), and we were offered a test drive. It was a very interesting experience! If anyone hasn’t tried it yet, I highly recommend giving it a go.

An older SUV, why?

1. High ground clearance as regardless if you drive in the city or outside, you are about to find damaged road.
2. SUV with rugged tires, for the same reason. Also, tires with good/deep profile as when it rains, it rains.
3. Not a new vehicle as that's how you draw less attention and if anything happens, the value of the vehicle does not suffer that much.
4. I don't own an electric vehicle, but I have driven quite a few and you could potentially use one in the DR, but that depends on where you would use it. I would personally not want to even drive EV in the DR. It's fine in a European city, but for nothing else (my opinion)

We have a 2006 4.0 L SUV and I would not change it. My wife says it consumes too much but I'm fine with it, as there the structure is not flimsy but a sturdy body-on-frame... Also, where ever we drive, DIGESETT/AMET seems to always ignore us, so that's a bonus point...

What JD said above, is best, ours has 4x4 which you can electronically connect. It has been in use in the campo when climbing up a steep hill...

for me, if I had a bit more money, a Hummer H3 would be perfect, not as big as an H2 but still plenty rugged for these roads; I currently have a small SUV

I had Dodge Ram for a few years, then big old Ford Bronco, now I drive an armored SUV for the last 9 years but planning to sell it (I almost don't use it now), the next one probably will be a 2 door Wrangler.

My vehicle of choice if I had a vehicle would be an old jeep. Like the heavy duty steel army jeeps. When someone hits you nothing will happen to it. I always joke with people that it would need large cage with spikes surrounding it just to be safe.

By the way, if somebody is interested in decent but not expensive armored car (2004 Grand Cherokee L6 4.0L with just 50.000 miles on it and in perfect mechanical condition), PM me, I can sell it. It's fully armored, it also has military grade run flats.
