In an interview published on 13 April 2021 in Diario Libre, the chief of the Police, Major General Edward Sánchez says for the first time there is the political will to carry out a “real reform” of the Police.

Sánchez told Diario Libre that if it were up to him, the reform would begin with “dignifying the career.” This is what the Abinader administration has been doing. New funds have been made available for better medical insurance, housing plans and better wages for the agents that make the least in the Police.

President Luis Abinader last week announced a large committee to help draft the new government’s plans for better police force.

An editorial in Diario Libre today presents the corrupt side that is the daily reality within the force, where the complicity with police bosses defines who does what and gets what.

The PN was instituted as a repression tool from its inception.
The training of cadets is based on military traits.
There’s zilch of real policing training going into these cadets.
They first must understand the laws they will be enforcing.
The best way is to start from scratch and recruit college students that want to pursue a career in LE. Training for 1 year minimum and schooling on a law degree aimed at policing during that time. Continuing the studies as they perform work in order to gain rank and pay increases.

The entire command must not be military, but actual lawyers. Leaving the selection of the chief of police to the Dominican Lawyer’s association.
Keeping the command structure away from political hands or pressure. Only answerable to the PGR.

Pay should be set at 50k to start after 2nd year. First year 27k. In one year the useless ones can be pruned from the force.

Provide them with the right equipment and protection (bullet proof vests), also include personal cameras.

Police should use a vehicle that it’s only allowed import and possession for the force alone. This will help cut any opportunities for criminal hands to fake their vehicles. Much like Japan and some other countries do today.

Also replace all armed security guards working for private companies with actual police members, hired and paid directly to the department.

How many times have the police been cleaned up since I have lived here and it didn't help? I have lost count. There is far too much profit for people to remain "pure".

Lots of great points. For every two unqualified removed, hire one qualified.
