Medication
Rule of thumb: When you go abroad, take the medicines you will need, no more, no less. Narcotics and certain other drugs with a high potential for abuse - Rohypnol, GHB and Fen-Phen, to name a few - may not be brought into the United States, and there are severe penalties for trying to do so. If you need medicines that contain potentially addictive drugs or narcotics (e.g., some cough medicines, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, antidepressants or stimulants), do the following:

?Declare all drugs, medicinals, and similar products to the appropriate CBP official;
?Carry such substances in their original containers;
?Carry only the quantity of such substances that a person with that condition (e.g., chronic pain) would normally carry for his/her personal use; and
?Carry a prescription or written statement from your physician that the substances are being used under a doctor's supervision and that they are necessary for your physical well being while traveling.

U.S. residents entering the United States at international land borders who are carrying a validly obtained controlled substance (other than narcotics such as marijuana, cocaine, heroin, or LSD), are subject to certain additional requirements. If a U.S. resident wants to bring in a controlled substance (other than narcotics such as marijuana, cocaine, heroin, or LSD) but does not have a prescription for the substance issued by a U.S.-licensed practitioner (e.g., physician, dentist, etc.) who is registered with, and authorized by, the Drug Enforcement Administration to prescribe the medication, the individual may not import more than 50 dosage units of the medication into the United States. If the U.S. resident has a prescription for the controlled substance issued by a DEA registrant, more than 50 dosage units may be imported by that person, provided all other legal requirements are met.

Please note that only medications that can be legally prescribed in the United States may be imported for personal use. Be aware that possession of certain substances may also violate state laws. As a general rule, the FDA does not allow the importation of prescription drugs that were purchased outside the United States. Please see their Web site for information about the enforcement policy for personal use quantities.

Warning: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration prohibits the importation, by mail or in person, of fraudulent prescription and nonprescription drugs and medical devices. These include unorthodox ?cures? for such medical conditions as cancer, AIDS, arthritis or multiple sclerosis. Although such drugs or devices may be legal elsewhere, if the FDA has not approved them for use in the United States, they may not legally enter the country and will be confiscated, even if they were obtained under a foreign physician?s prescription.

Additional information about traveling with and importing medication can be found at the FDA's Drugs page. ( Drugs )

The FDA is responsible for pharmaceutical admissibility determinations. If you have any questions as to whether a specific pharmaceutical may be imported into the United States, please contact the FDA, Division of Import Operations and Policy, at (301) 796-0356.

If you have any questions regarding the importation of a controlled substance into the United States, please contact the Drug Enforcement Administration, Office of Diversion Control, International Drug Unit, at (202) 305-8800.

Just because you need a prescription doesn't mean it is a controlled substance.

hmmmmmm, maybe?

True. However there is a limit you can bring across. Not even sure you are allowed to have them in your possession if you don't have a prescription. I get asked the question quite often by the guys who want to bring viagra back home and I really don't know the answer. I do know many that bring back hundreds of tablets and never get grief. It would be nice to know the truth.

Do you think that the big pharma companies want competition? Prescription Viagra sells for about ten bucks per pill in Canada, maybe more. Here it sells for about one buck and guys are bringing it back to resell. Evil companies such as Pfizer have way too much power on pricing and don't want to lose market share. I'm sure they are the ones pressuring the government on all of this.

I still would like the truth on how many you can legally take back if any.

Are you expecting being frisked? Its only 4 tablets and surely they would if anything just confiscate them?
Don't know if sniffer dogs are trained for Viagra?
Maybe you could just add them in with a dark coloured bottle full of vitamins?
My last suggestion probably isn't worthy of Viagra lol
Hope you get through.

Yes, you can recognize those dogs easily... if you are a female passenger

yes when I talk about the cheaper prices of Viagra, I'm refering to the generic...same stuff. Wholesale is about 20 pesos/pill

The beauty of bringing back generics from the D.R. in the manufacturer's sealed packaging is that if US Customs ever asks me about them I just tell them it's an OTC med for my acid reflux. Those guys don't really care unless it's something that can get THEM in trouble. FAA moles transport all kinds of stuff across US Customs just to check security and the agents never know when it's going to be their turn in the barrel to be targeted by security inspectors who look just like you, me and anybody else.

dv8...hi...I had no idea either...guess the U.S. is far more stringent than Europe...I would never have thought that Viagra was considered a controlled substance lol

you could always go to a general doctor, pay 500 pesos and have him prescribe you viagra: once a day for two weeks. that's 14 pills. you'd be covered from this side.

In the last year I've gone back and forth to US a lot...... US officials want to see a prescription...simple......
If you have drugs (that are supposed to have a prescription in the US) and no "doctor's note" they treat it as if you are a smuggler. For a few viagra, you get all the questions and searches, etc. that the protocol calls for....they may or may not cite or arrest you...but they will use up many hours of your time, causing you to feel like you are a bad person with some other kind of agenda. They have to make sure you are not a national security risk and will find a way to put you on some kind of list you do not want to be on..... then they will take your Viagra, say you are free to go and don't you ever do that again....
In the mean time you have missed your flight and have to pay for a room in Miami overnight and a $$$ penalty for missing your flight and re-booking charge from the airlines.....it is all part of the system they have set up for the "little guys" (the normal traveler who wouldn't even think of hiding something as innocent as viagra) that make this kind of mistake....they will take a lot of your time and money to make sure you do not forget.
But, it's up to you......
Depends on how much of a risk taker you are

Did this actually happen to you, or is it supposition?? Are some airports worse than others in the US?

I've been traveling to DR since 1975, and I've NEVER had anyone even LOOK at any pills I've had with me.

Do they just look for a prescription bottle? I mean, couldn't you just fill up an empty prescription bottle with almost anything? I've noticed that my mail-order 90 day prescription bottles sometimes do say "this pill is a small round pink pill with the number 76 engraved on them" or some such thing.

To be honest, I'm still surprised that they noticed Rush Limbagh's bottle had someone else's name on it. Can't help but wonder if the officer just hated the guy and looked for anything he could find just to be spiteful. I can't imagine them doing that for every traveler!

I made the mistake of having loose pills and vitamins in a zip lock in my shaving kit in my carry-on. Always did that going back and forth....never a problem....UNTIL..... after they lifted the ban on small knives. I found, at my U.S. home, one of those small swiss army knives, (really small, the one with the toothpick, one 2" blade and scissors) and put it in my shaving kit to use here. Got flagged at x-ray and when the guy found it he told me the media was wrong on their dates and these things wouldn't be allowed until next month. I could check the bag or give up the knife...I let the knife go. Then he found the loose pill bag (maybe 100 or so vitamins and 4 viagra mixed in) and asked if I had a prescription for this...I said no and ended up in one of the offices with the guy going through everything. They even re-searched my computer bag and verrrry thoroughly wiped every wire in the case with the gunpowder residue wipes...all of them. To me it seemed like they were just killing time...the TSA guy told me twice he was sorry for the delay but this was the procedure they had to follow.
45 minutes later another guy shows up, introduces himself and shows me he has run my record and questions me about things on it that were on it (nothing to speak of) and what kind of work I was doing when I lived at such and such address years and years ago....I got the feeling he had my whole life on paper in front of him. We talked, cordially I might add, for another 45 minutes or so and he said he didn't really think there was a problem here, except for the pills which he would have to take, and to make sure I had a prescription for them next time and put vitamins in an unopened bottle.... to never do this again because I'd wasted a lot of their time and manpower for nothing.
By then, I was pretty shook up and had missed my flight....
I feel like I've kinda hijacked this thread, so back to the original question.....
I won't travel without a prescription and unopened bottles now....and I've never had ANY problem before, at any airport, in the Caribbean, Europe, or Asia except for that time....I think it was just my day in the fishbowl.

Wow, thanks for sharing your story. The knife makes me understand better how they found them, it could happen to anyone. I stupidly threw a big tube of toothpaste in my carry-on last year, and they took it at JFK, but that was it.

I realize hindsight is 20/20, but why not just tell him they're vitamins? It's legal to carry vitamins in a zip-lock bag!
It's legal to dump all your meds into the bottom of your suitcase and travel with them that way! They're yours, you legally own them.

You just need to find a Dominican TSA agent!
Last time I came back from Boston, I had 4 or 5, 8 ounce bottles of yogurt in my carry on.
I was sent to a separate screening area.
The agent said I couldn't take them into the plane.
I think I said "Cono, no me jodes", and a Dominicano supervisor came over.
He told the other guy he would handle me.
The guy left, and we had a short conversation in "Dominican".
He said to take the yogurt with me.
He told me if I got stopped again to say the yogurt is needed for me to take my medications.
"No Problemas" after that!
