Tips should be appropriately scaled to the local economy.
well Bob. as I have indicated often, I tip for good service and good work. I can honestly say that I know of no man that tips under 2 dollars for a haircut. Anywhere! As for tipping waiters, what loser goes out with his family friends and/or colleagues and makes excuses for not tipping. I am guessing the same people that always complain about everything everywhere so they can justify in their mind for not rewarding service people. The people that run the staff ragged and then complain about them. I almost always get good service, 90 % of the time. If I were to be in a social setting and someone I was with mistreated staff or stiffed them, It would be the very last time I associated with them. Socially or in business.

where you are wrong, my dear, is that you need to know the situations when a discreet exchange of cash will get you favor. You don't stand up on the table and scream how much you love the place and the service. More than that, I am not just speaking of a food and beverage establishment. I appreciate your pointers on how to handle money in DR.

Darling,
I understand completely and have participated in and profited from this system.
I know when and where to apply it and for what reasons.

I even understand the system of bribes by governments and business.
Including lavish gifts or the free company of cultural escorts of whatever inclination.
This also works in politics and diplomacy.
All these are age old customs, even more so in the elevated world of politics and business.

Of course you can also slide a covert tip for your Mc Happy meal across the counter, to gain favour on the next burger dining out experience.

TIPS =

To Insure Prompt Service.

As you state discretion is king, as is discretionary spending to gain advantage.
Yet no need to throw money aimlessly at the poor to curry favour, as there will be little to go around.

Better to do good than harm.......
Do good without expecting something in return.
Donate without taking credit.
AAaaaahhhh !

P.S.
As a world traveller/woking internationally, someone who speaks several languages and after many years in the DR I have a handle on Dominicans and other cultures.
Most of all on human psychology and regional differences.

We are having fun psycho analyzing each other and others. :)
Hijo, with situational awareness...

Cariño, who even hinted that this was a good practice? We/I were/was clearly speaking of situations, business and personal, where a discretional greasing of the palm is beneficial. When, where and how you do this separates the men from the boys.

So a person that cuts your hair is worth less than a 2-dollar tip. The entire public sees you with this haircut! We live in different worlds. In my world that is called a cheapskate.
Big, how much do you usually pay for a haircut? We're talking about local barbershops here that charge $5 dollars. I doubt you would ever step foot in one of these(?). They're patronized by mostly Dominicans - probably 98% or more with just an occasional gringo. The average tip they get is around 50 to 100 pesos and they're happy with that. If you want to give more, fine.

Let's try and come back to the topic, treatment of a foreigner. Clearly there are strong opinions on tipping. Everyone has their own reasons for tipping or not tipping. We can respect each other's reasons and not stoop to the back and forth.
