MATILDA: There are reports of a grounded ship off SPM. A ship said to contain a cargo of Propane gas (LPG)...Any news on that??

HB

Apparently happened this afternoon. My sources tell me the Marina de Guerra have investigated and are working to sort it out, and they say there is no problem!!! Must admit I'm glad I'm not sitting on the Malecon there eating shrimp at the moment. Anyway the ship is still there.

All their houses have been washed away?
Are these real houses or shanties?

Most made of wood with zinc roofs. Those made of block are full of water to the roof so the structure can be saved. Some made of block have been washed away - as you know they are not big on 6 foot foundations here. In Juan Dolio all of the houses not owned by expats are made of wood. rent for those is 1000-1500 a month. The cheapest apt made of block which is a studio is 8000 RD$ a month - way beyond the reach of the average Dominican. There are some block houses in the barrios but very few - the vast majority here are wood.

I'm astonished.
I had no idea that it was that bad down your way.
Block houses filled with water to the rooftops?
Are they in valleys?
Has the ocean risen that much?
I mean, this is sounding as bad as Katrina.

My laptop changed to DST on Sunday and I had to change it back manually. Maybe it was following the UK or maybe it has a mind of its own.:paranoid:

HB - what was that about not working on Sundays? Even if true you'd think she'd be sharp enough to keep her mouth shut.

I don't understand nothing about DST anymore. People on DR1 are saying that we are changing for DST and in my agenda it's written (Sunday, November 4th) Daylight saving time ends. Are we going or does it end ????

It ends soon in America and they have already changed in Great Brtitain.

It's not the ocean it is the rivers. There are big rivers flowing to the sea, Higuamo, Soco and I can't remember the rest. All the rain here, plus further inland comes down and the rivers rise so rapidly. With a storm or hurricane about 4 years ago, I can't remember which, there was nothing bad about the weather here in Juan Dolio and then 3 or 4 days later the beaches were covered with dead horses, cows, goats, trees and rubbish. All coming down the rivers from inland. It is the Rio Soco which caused the problems in Ramon Santana, and the Soco bridge between San Pedro and La Romana (used in the Sylvester Stallone film, First Blood) is under water. The problem is not actually on the coast as the surge has not been that bad, it is a bit inland - albeit not much, from the rivers. And it is still raining hard here - 6 hours constantly tonight and I think it feels like it is moving North so that will be more rain inland, and hence higher rivers tomorrow and the few days following

What is the current status of bridges out? Is the road from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana passable? Is the road from Santo Domingo to Azua, San juan de la maguana passable?

I know that the concierge of my building lives in Herrera, so I asked him how the area had fared. I specifically asked him about Barrio Duarte and his comment was "estaba como un mar", meaning that area was very flooded.

Thanks Delores, that was very thoughtful of you. Like a sea then literally....we didn't manage to get hold of family last night so I hope they're ok, will try again tonight, if anyone knows how bad the houses in the area are then please let me know, thanks.

It's a bit after 5:30 a.m. and it is still raining in Santiago!
Just a drizzle but it has not stopped.

Frank the Tank arrived last night. He is hoping to go to the ball game tonight! Hummm, maybe...

Hmm - do you think that'll be happening?

On the plus side - although the sun is shining her in York (UK) the temperature is around about 60 and is more likely to be around 40-50 by Saturday :( and its only November!

This is the latest from the BBC - it really annoys me that they hardly ever report anything that happens in DR (I really had to search for this - and how much of it do you feel is accurate reporting?). If it hadn't been for this site I wouldn't have had a clue what was happening as it hasn't been on the TV news here either - everything is about bloody Britney Spears at the moment, and I'm sick of hearing about trivial stuff like that (anyone would think there was nothing important going on in the world!) Rant over - I'll save the rest for another time and post!

National disaster

This truly is turning into a national disaster, and still no signs of the storm moving on.
Another couple of days of rain like this, and "ugly" is going to get "uglier".

BTW: Thanks Lambada and everyone else who keep posting links to news reports and youtube.
