Unless your husband lives near a river or a gully, should be life as usual. Maybe some flooding, but only if that normally occurs at his place. With the exception of some fallen trees that have affected electricity service, what we are experiencing here is mainly lots of rain. I suppose you are accustomed to it, as you say you live in London, but here in the Caribbean we take our sunny days for granted. Also, people who have to get to work, get soaked wet as they have to wait in long lines for transport and walk long distances, and of course, many take motoconchos, which means they will be drenched.

Hi there, my husbands family's house is built right in front of what used to be a river and was then filled with waste (something like that) and when it rains it fills up so I would imagine with this sort of rain it would be pretty bad? Does anyone know the Barrio Duarte area of Herrera? My husbands really worried and as he know's the area (he lived there for 27 years) I don't think he would worry about it for no reason.

I am in the UK, but not London (York) I can imagine what you mean about taking sun for granted - well I wish I could ;) its so cold here right now!

Thanks
Kate

Thanks...........

A special thanks to ALL of the "on the scene reporters". The reports that came in yesterday were a great help. I was able to make contact with the few people I know in the DR this morning. It seems services are somewhat back to normal.

My thanks as well - again

Again, everyone, thank you for keeping those of us not there informed. It seems the TV news here is more concerned with Britney's life than with real events (how can I roll my eyes on the computer?) Noel got about 20 seconds of air time (and no photos) on the evening news (local & nat'l.).

I, too, have spoken with several friends in Higuey last night and earlier this morning. Seems to have calmed and power is back on - for now. Because of the power outages, people with cell phone only couldn't get them charged for awhile. Sounds like things are getting back to normal, and si dios quiere, the sun will be out tomorrow.

Times like these, I really appreciate those of you who write regularly on DR1.

Sheesh.

Now the tail end looks even longer than early this morning.
So much for my prediction of it all being gone by the end of the day.

RE: Duarte Hwy. It is open but there are two places where one of the bridges is closed and the other one is being used for two-way traffic.
RE: Rains. In Santiago there is a continual rain--more of a hard drizzle--that has not stopped since yesterday.
RE: Fatalities. This will not be know for days. And it will be much higher than current estimates.
RE: Blame Game. Now in full force. Can you imagine the woman that heads the meteorological office telling reporters "that she does not work on Sundays"?????

This will only get worse. Hang on.

For those with relatives in Puerto Plata: the town is operating normally. The worst effects were felt in the low-lying downtown barrios (near the port) where indeed there was some flooding but driving around this morning my overall impression is that this is no way as bad as the floods we had in March. Homes haven't been washed away in these barrios like they were in March. This is partly due to the rain being steady for a long time but not torrential and partly due to the fact that some drainage work had been undertaken in some barrio areas.
Limpieza encaches evitó inundaciones

Of course in El Javilar, the barrio outside Costamber, they had started the work and dug into the roads to lay pipes, but then they stopped, leaving the rubble dug up to act as a barrier to the rain draining away..........so those residents had a lot of water which had nowhere to run to. Residents in San Marcos who were effected in March still haven't had repair work done and have now been effected again
Puerto Plata Digital

This morning even the 'bad' road into Costambar is passable - a lot more holes than before so you bounce around like crazy (girls, wear a sports bra :) ). The University road into Costambar is no problem.

In the rest of the province of Puerto Plata there are reports of problems in Gaspar Hernandez and that the Sabaneta and Veragua rivers burst their banks but I'll leave it to those living there to report on this.

I know that the concierge of my building lives in Herrera, so I asked him how the area had fared. I specifically asked him about Barrio Duarte and his comment was "estaba como un mar", meaning that area was very flooded.

Yes, I forgot to cancel the wake-up call. So much for our lie-in :) Also, the time-stamp on DR1 posts is one hour behind the actual time. It appears to have gone on to daylight saving time together with the US.

The US haven't changed time yet neither has Canada. This year it's going to be next weekend (Saturday to Sunday)

emee34, you were asking about Moca also. Some info here:
Bienvenidos al Hoy Digital
Hoy says 600 homes flooded, tens of people disappeared, 1000 families affected, agricultural losses due to river rising including loss of lots of hens and baby chicks. Diario Libre says 1500 homes damaged in Moca
Noticias - Cibao: Siete muertos y trece desaparecidos
There are pics on both links.

Names of some of deceased here for those who want to check
El pa?*s bajo lluvia - Noel deja 11 muertos según el conteo oficial

Papers reporting that water being released from the dams in a controlled fashion - some discussion on TV tonight that this would have been better done in the daylight than in the dark.

Question for moderator - would it be better to have a separate thread for tourists asking about future holiday weather? It's just that when there are relatives from outside DR seeking info about communities & family members about whom they have real concerns, they may feel that the questions about future holiday weather are, well, a little insensitive............?

Thanks so much for this info. I was able to reach one brother-in-law today and everyone is ok. Thanks again - please be safe down there.

My laptop changed to DST on Sunday and I had to change it back manually. Maybe it was following the UK or maybe it has a mind of its own.:paranoid:

HB - what was that about not working on Sundays? Even if true you'd think she'd be sharp enough to keep her mouth shut.
