Skype is VOIP though. If you want a "proper" US number, you will need a US SIM. That's the only way to ensure a non-VOIP number. You can buy a second phone to put this SIM in if you don't have a dual-SIM phone. Most modern Androids are dual-SIM these days.

You can get texts to a US cell number with Magic Jack. But receiving calls on the app for cells is not reliable. But texts are.. Of course your regular landline will work well anywhere with internet in the World.

I am considering this but don’t know if my iPhone can have two Sim

Depends on your iPhone model . You can have dual sim with the newer models of iPhones as Apple explained here :

And it works too . My old iPhone XR has a UK SIM card + US eSim …Miesposa’s iPhone 13 has a Dominican SIM card and eSim from one other country.

DR is not on this list of wireless carriers that offer eSim technology…but I’m sure it will be soon seeing that Claro in other countries in Latin America are on board.

I will test drive 2FA on US eSim when I’m back in DR.

That’s not a bad idea. A simple second Cel phone. I am not giving up on my iPhone.

I've been using a dual sim phone with T-Mobile and Claro for 4 years. The messages, such as bank verifications come through on my US T-Mobile number but data is only free on 2G which is close to useless.
If they ever allow free 3G international roaming it will be much more usable.
FYI - 2G is being discontinued in the US.

No offence. Lol I've said it wrong my whole life no worries Uncle W!

I recently sent a work email that i was trying to explain a certian individual had intimate, extensive knowledge about a system, and i said "carnal knowledge" 😂

Besides, you know ingle is my 2nd language.

Touche for mudanza!
lol.
Been there, done that.
For years I made the same mistake and English is my 1st language.
Gee.

It seems, as posted previously, that you no longer need a dual sim phone. That's old school and there are simpler, at least in terms of hardware, solutions like Skype, as mentioned by Cristo Rey. That seems best if you're not afraid of a small fee and then no need to change phones or get an additional phone.

I have no need and Whatsapp or Viber works well for my purposes but if you need to receive SMS messages from NA, or elsewhere abroad, is there a better, non-hardware solution than Skype?
OP: I have a great paid sub. with Skype: unlimited calling to the U.S. for $2.99 per month, almost free. But when I tried to obtain a Skype phone number, I was prevented.

Hmmm 🤔…We were just talking about this yesterday. Try an eSim .. …its basically just a virtual version of a US SIM card. If you Google ‘eSim USA’ and if you have a compatible phone you can find and choose a provider and be up and running with a non voip US number .

We chose ‘mintmobile ‘ great customer service …so far 😬……I actually asked them the question about receiving SMS messages for 2FA while abroad…and they said “no problem “ . All I can say for now is that our eSim number works without internet connection which would indicate that it’s a non voip number.

Hope this helps and good luck.
Thanks for the "mintmobile" lead.

Tell that to Samsung and Google. I've had many Samsung phones and while I won't claim without researching that they don't offer dual sims, they are not the better or feature phones, which are all single sim, which is industry standard. Same with Google both Nexus and Pixel.

Could you give some examples please of these fabulous dual sim android phones?

I'm going to venture a guess that they're not top tier and therefore not that popular. Any I've seen are not prominent in NA from major providers, not that some aren't great. I have a friend that swears by some of the "military-grade" toughened phones and many of those also have 2 or even 3 sims.

I think that it may be the case that the models sold in the US are different to the models sold in other markets, and are less likely to have dual SIM.

For example the OnePlus 10 which is a very popular top end Android phone has dual SIM in Europe and India but not in the US.

Would the Dual sim phone be any good for SMS unless you hsve "International" or "Wi-Fi calling" on it from the out of country company? I have a friend that uses a U.S.A. phone when here, his phone company has wi-fi calling. That may be your best option.

Too bad the company you deal with will not accept Google or VOIP numbers,

IIRC, all of the models of OnePlus phones have dual sims. My current OnePlus 5 is the best phone I've owned. I like it so much I have a couple extra of them in my desk in case mine gets stolen.

Thanks. The NA market does not have access from most cell service providers for those Australian versions but of course, most will allow you to "bring your own phone" so if you could get one you could, theoretically, use one. My understanding is that most people get their cell phones on a monthly (2 year?) plan from their provider.

The OnePlus phones are supposed to be top-notch but they were also largely shunned in NA due to fears that the Chinese Gov't controls or influences the manufacturer and people are afraid of being monitored, etc... I have nothing against them but I was also thrilled with my Samsungs and Pixel phones.
