To those who've used Uber before. How's payment secured? For example, I ask a cab, the cab comes I get in, he brings me to my destination. Is there a moment that I need to confirm I took the ride and the payment is made? If so, when 's that? Is it like a confirmation I do on my phone which the driver receives immediately? What if your phones battery is empty during the ride?

You open the app and you get a picture of how many uber cars are in the area (you also get a estimate of your trip, you may even save your frequent destinations). Then, you request a car and you get a message telling you which driver and car u will get. Once, you step in, I assuming the driver confirms (but notes sure). You get to your destination and receive a mail or a text with payment info a few mintutes later. You have the option to rate the driver. It is well done and super convenient. When u sign up for the app, that is when u enter your cc info.

Basically, once you request the car, you have nothing else to do.

"Uber" is being challenged in various countries.
Uber ordered to discontinue Pop service in Italy | Technology | The Guardian

My crystal ball says, that in the Dominican Republic los due?os del pa?s will fight "Uber" successfully.

Time will tell. My money is on Uber :)

Remember, it comes in various tiers, Uber POP is what's creating issues in some markets.
As fas as I'm aware, Uber Taxi and Uber Black have not been banned in any country.

Because it's so disruptive, so well used and liked by the general public, it and equivalents will eventually prevail in all markets.

Adapt or die...

thanks for that info/link.
it gives a much better view of the product.
not something i would use, specially with a $10.- cancelation Fee(higher than any usually full cabby fare to be paid within Santo Domingo for example), but sure it has it's lovers for a market.
looks to me like they App owners contract with local Taxi/Transfer Services, that way insurances/unions thingies and such are covered, as they would tell their rates, so forget about the Uber promo of "40% less than cabby fare" and alikes.
let's see how their negotiations with the local Unions at Santo Domingo or Santiago work out, the Transfer Market is here and always demanding Services(for Taxis, Limos and alikes).

Uber Taxi and Black have not been banned because the drivers are licensed and regulated like others in the industry.

Uber Pop is running into issues because it's John Doe picking you up with his personal car doing business. He has no permit to do that kind of business (according to the courts) which is where the snafu begins.

No doubt with the help of lobbying money and other interests making sure it makes the news.
When your entire industry is being turned upside down, amazing what goes on.

Uber incidents are a drop in the ocean, as compared to regular taxi services.
How many people are robbed daily in Santo Domingo alone in taxis and conchos?

Yeah, many people avoid conchos and "pirate taxis" for similar issues.

No one said it was normal taxi service. What I am saying is there are "normal" taxi drivers who commit the same crimes. Also did you happen to notice the link I posted was put online by the "normal" taxi and limousine commission. Read Robert's post #42.

Good to know posters here have had a positive experience with it! Perhaps it'll work out here, who knows!

Uber will do just fine in Santo Domingo, although I suspect it will take some time to gain momentum. Just like in Bogota, Cali, Rio, Panama, Peru, Chile etc.

If you have ever used Uber with your phone, you will understand why it's so easy to use, the connivence and why it scares the crap out of existing taxi networks.

I took uber in bucaramanga and barranquilla colombia. They can charge more and I would pay it. In miami it is cheaper than taxi in an attempt to get authorized for MIA.
I would love uber in DR!!!

I am on long island and uber is ok. Takes about 10 minutes as most people have cars. First guy we had, I called to say we were at train station. Not a word of english. Spoke to him in spanish and then he was cool. Dominican from Santiago.

Wonder if that's going to work here. I'm sure the association of taxistas will be very happy to get some competition of anyone with a car and a smartphone.

Or maybe it's the companies like Apolo that will suffer.

Very good question! I am not sure about that! i am not sure i would get in a private car in Dr with anybody! Even in the developped worlds, bad things have happened to people while riding Uber!
Lets wait and see!

nothing more needs to be said. Uber better look elsewhere.

Well, UBER has a Powerfull LOBBY! Therefore, if they really want to be in DR, they can easily do it with pockets full of cash! That i dont think it will be problem for Uber to integrate the Dr Market, especially a country as corrupt as DR

There is a u.s. company doing shuttle service in punta cana, GreyLine. Wonder how things are going for them as there is fierce competition.

You think you can't identify them? It would be insanely simple for a DR taxi union to place calls for Uber cars, and then just sit and wait for them to show up.
How long would it take the union here to figure out how to do that?

and we know in DR there were murders already in disputes over the rutas...

lets see if they can figure out who to corrupt.,

Uber seems to have a aggressive legal team. how they managed to move thru other major cities is a testament of growth. If the potential is there , they go after it. Is the DR big enough for Uber to pursue?

Dominicans have heard of and work with Uber in all major cities. Dominicans are a big portion of the Livery Cab , Owner Operator Variety, As well as colombians, pakistani, bangledeshi, south pacific immigrants. These immigrant groups, in the U.S. may or may not have college education, but have a need to make money, feed the family, and chase the Dream. These mini franchise on wheels has the potential for making good money, either 6 hrs a day or a full 12 hr shift.

Intresting fact , the Lincoln Town car is the run of the mill, dime a dozen standard Livery/Car service vehicle in nyc, but is considered Upscale, Luxury in the DR ,mainly used for Bodas or VIP pick ups at the airport. I wonder how the Lincoln Town Car would do as an Uber vehicle in the DR?
