There is a u.s. company doing shuttle service in punta cana, GreyLine. Wonder how things are going for them as there is fierce competition.

Greyline is a online transfer and excursions reseller, selling such services at many detsinations around the globe.
they work locally with a registered Transfer Company, one of many dozens already existing Transfer Companies.
nothing illegal on that, no confrontations with any Transfer Union, because they register a company and vehicles as a DR-Registered Company with the permit of the tourism secretary for such Transfers.
like very most Transfer Servcies, they are not allowed to offer Taxi Service.
that their online sales may be based in the US or Virgin Islands or China, doesn't matter, they are a average locally registered Transfer Company.
something completely different to unregistered private Uber drivers/vehicles.

lets see if they can figure out who to corrupt.,

Uber seems to have a aggressive legal team. how they managed to move thru other major cities is a testament of growth. If the potential is there , they go after it. Is the DR big enough for Uber to pursue?

Dominicans have heard of and work with Uber in all major cities. Dominicans are a big portion of the Livery Cab , Owner Operator Variety, As well as colombians, pakistani, bangledeshi, south pacific immigrants. These immigrant groups, in the U.S. may or may not have college education, but have a need to make money, feed the family, and chase the Dream. These mini franchise on wheels has the potential for making good money, either 6 hrs a day or a full 12 hr shift.

Intresting fact , the Lincoln Town car is the run of the mill, dime a dozen standard Livery/Car service vehicle in nyc, but is considered Upscale, Luxury in the DR ,mainly used for Bodas or VIP pick ups at the airport. I wonder how the Lincoln Town Car would do as an Uber vehicle in the DR?

at 10 miles to the gallon, not too well.

beg to differ with you

Actually Uber thrives in small to mid-size secondary cities where there is very little or no public transportation and spotty taxi service. In those sorts of places (think Windsor, ON/Central Coast CA/Indianapolis IN/Sevilla Spain etc) taxi service tends to be relatively expensive, slow to arrive, and low quality. Uber is generally less expensive than taxis by 10% to 20%, except during so-called "surge periods" when taxi are not available. Based on the factual and logical gaps I see in some of the "impossible in DR" posts, I suspect some have never used Uber or know the details of its business model. So, can it work in the Dominican Republic? I think it can in the center cities and tourist centers where there is sufficient demand. For example, uber is exploding in India. Bank issued credit cards are not common among the middle to lower classes in India. Uber's solution is an electronic wallet system. Similar systems based on mobile phone networks and adapted SMS operate in Africa. I don't think Uber will kill the transport unions for the same reason publico routes still operate side by side with the metro. There are segments of the population who are not comfortable with having to board and get off trains at pre-defined stops. As long as there are walk in bill payment centers for Edesur and as long as most of the country lines up for auto marbetes during the same few days at the same time, there will be a market willing to deal with broken down 20 year old Toyotas operated by unskilled drivers with little sense of where they are going.

It's probably safe to assume that Uber is not a factor in Smuckmagosh Ohio either. It's a service tailored to larger urban areas with a significant population that needs and uses public transportation on a regular basis. Uber would not be looking to compete with the guaguas or the motoconchos. They want the $50+ taxi turistico business in smaller centres and the the frequent cross town traffic in major cities such as SD. I don't see much of a future for Uber in La Vega.

Taxi insurance, that is funny! Taxistas keep their antenna and magnetized roof sign in the back of their cars so they can pirate union territories at will. Watch them casually reach out their windows and plop the taxi sign on their roof and stick the antenna next to it. Who really believes they are declaring themselves as public transport when they renew their insurance, if they have ANY insurance to begin with?

The DR should bring taxi regulations up to date. Sell medallions, give medallion holders their turf, and require special inspections n requirements. Great way to generate goverment monies. Then have a dispatch based service that is separate of taxi. There are so many ways it can be done with control. Im sure enough dominicans know the way it works in the u.s., so why not convert over to a modern way of doing business.

Most cabbies that are independant owners, get their own insurance, more than 2 cars put to work requires extra insurance like a company,

You think you can't identify them? It would be insanely simple for a DR taxi union to place calls for Uber cars, and then just sit and wait for them to show up.

How long would it take the union here to figure out how to do that?

But there would be a record of who ordered that uber. CC info, billing address etc.

of course it would, so what?
the unions can afford the most expensive lawyers of the territory,
their drivers have bank accounts and credit cards,
so do their wife's, brothers in law, friends etc etc.
to order a transport to find out who shows up, thats easy.
they don't even need to bother right away, then. do the ride and memorize the car/driver, for an other time at an other place, without a registered call.
IF they wanna bother, they will do.

the more read about them the more crappy they appear.
they do not allow guns on their rides in DR?, so they will have few customers and ZERO drivers.
and what a sick example to show their ruling against the guns:
a chicago driver, thanks God, shot a sick ba?""$d of a Gunman who was shooting into the public crowd.
of course the Driver been not charged with any crime.
to show such story, to tell the world that they do not allow Guns on their rides, well, i am now Sure that i will never use them. that app will not be installed on my family's phones.
