This might have been asked but what it the cost for a Uber taxi in The capital

It showed on my phone as average rate 70 pesos. Not sure what that's based on. I might try it out later today and will report how much I was charged.

Overnight update. I believe Uber is here......................

The Uber app now shows my location plus above the location pin it says "No cars available". How can that be a good sign? It is the first day the app worked and it is 5 AM.

My guess-ta-mation, give Uber time to get the drivers signed up. Let the drivers get their friends to start driving and next year Uber will be a common household name in SD centro.

reporting from Gazcue, SD centro

Yeah baby, another update. It is now 8:50 AM and I can have a Uber car at my place in 3 minutes............. you got to LOVE Santo Domingo Centro.

Not a bad rate it might work depending on the increment jumps for distance as a regular cab is around 200 - 250 in the capital if I not mistaken

Did a rate estimate from Agora, where I am now to Las Praderas / Restauradores: 102-123 pesos. Average cab will charge 180 to 200 pesos for that ride.

At those rates I think I will give the driver a small tip and still be ahead of the game.

As Willie Sutton said when ask why he focused his energy on banks "that is where the money is."

There are actually a bunch of available cars, but it seems to depend on where you point your pickup location to. If the ride is longer than 6 minutes for the driver to get to you, it will show NO CARS AVAILABLE.

Cars conglomerate around Lincoln and Churchill though.

For those who have never used Uber, the automobiles in the above pic posted by Mauricio are available Uber cars. Once you request a car you can track the car's location on the map. When you see the car is around the corner time to walk out the house and by the time you get to the curb the car will be pulling up.

The driver already knows your destination and you know the estimated fare without negotiating. A tourist who can not count from 1 - 10 in Spanish can now get a "cab" for a decent fare and NOT be subjected to the rip off con artist tourist cabbies.

To top it off once you have used Uber a few times your pickup and destination locations are saved. So for less taps on your smartphone you can get a cab quicker than tapping in a 10 digit phone number.

GO Uber .............

That would be 150 to 200 with Apolo et al. Some of the companies have a minimuml Uber also quotes a minimum in at least some markets. I am curious about what the uber minimum.

They just gave me a estimate of 101 Pesos from Bellas Artes to Bella Vista.

The 70 pesos I mentioned before was not the average but the minimum .

Well, let's try this. Requested a ride from my home to EPS in Bella Vista. Should be around 100 pesos. On the picture the guy looks like the average taxi driver and the car is a Honda Civic.......let's see if it's an Apolo taxi driver who also hooked up with uber.

Wow! That is HIGHLY competitive with the taxis. I'm pretty sure their minimums are in the 100 to 120 peso range.

thats right.
and a average Gringo looking customer would not get a ride for less than 150-200.- pesos as their "minimum Gringo fare", lol.
Mauricio,
pay attention if that Honda Civic is really a "newer" car, haha.
keep it rolling, guys.
i am very interested in observing that to roll on and how it develops.
bring it on in punta cana next.

One problem might be the average drivers capability to read a map. Still waiting here, I see him driving around near my street but not IN my street. He doesn't pick up his phone.

This is very interesting to watch. As I've stated many times on this forum, even for people who don't use public transportation, it is one of the very top things that degrades the quality of life for everyone. The grossly inconsiderate driving practices, the criminal activity, the lack of any semblance of customer service, and the absurd traffic jams they create are all things that uber can mitigate. Here is something we haven't discussed about uber yet, there is driver feedback that uber uses to manage driver performance. Just like professional staff at a corporation, performance appraisals that don't meet minimum standards will result in termination. It's not likely to lead to a London taxi level of skill and service, but there is massive room for approval and I am personally excited about the possibilities.

I will be following this closely.
I am not optimistic, based on the following: it makes sense, it is convenient and affordable, and it competes with the taxi mafia.
All three make me believe that there is no way in h#!! this is going to work here.
I am curious to see how long (days, weeks) it will be until the wheels fall off it.
I am putting my money on days, rather than weeks.
I hope I am wrong, but time will tell.
